Summer League Commitments: Blazers, Mavericks, Bulls, Wizards

Free agent guard Colbey Ross has committed to play summer league with the Trail Blazers, according to a league source. Ross last played for Era Nymburk in the Basketball Champions League.

Prior to going undrafted in 2021, Ross played four collegiate seasons at Pepperdine. He’s the only men’s player in NCAA Division 1 history with 2200+ points, 800+ assists, and 400+ rebounds in his career.

Here are a few more updates on summer league commitments:

Undrafted Clemson guard David Collins has agreed to play summer league with the Mavericks, his manager Ariel Levy told Hoops Rumors. Collins averaged 10.3 points per game last season, shooting an efficient 51% from the floor and 38% from three-point range.
The Bulls are adding guard Perrion Callandret to their summer league team, his agents Austin Eastman and Solomon Yon told Hoops Rumors. He played for the team’s G League affiliate this past season.
The Wizards are adding guard Craig Sword to their summer league roster, according to his agent, Josh Goodwin. Sword signed a 10-day contract with the team this past season. He also played 14 games for Washington’s G League affiliate.

Luol Deng Announces Retirement

Luol Deng will retire from the NBA after 15 seasons, according to a press release from the Bulls. Deng signed with the team today so he could announce his retirement with the organization where he had the most success. Chicago waived Perrion Callandret to create room for the signing.

“We’re very fortunate and humbled that Luol has chosen to retire as a Chicago Bull,” said President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Reinsdorf. “He was a role model on and off the court during his nine-plus years in Chicago, and he gave everything he had to help us win. I want to thank Luol for not only what he accomplished on the court for the team, but also for the leadership he demonstrated through his philanthropic efforts.”

Deng spent 10 years with the Bulls after being selected with the seventh pick in the 2004 draft. He also spent time with the Cavaliers, Heat, Lakers and Timberwolves, averaging 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 902 career games.

He remained productive in Cleveland and Miami, but his career hit a roadblock after signing a four-year, $72MM contract with the Lakers in 2016. He played just one game during the second season of that deal and was waived during the following offseason.

Deng ended his career last season in Minnesota, averaging 7.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 22 games.

Bulls Sign Perrion Callandret

The Bulls have signed former Idaho guard Perrion Callandret to a contract, according to RealGM’s transactions log. Callandret published a photo on Instagram on Tuesday that showed him putting pen to paper.

Callandret, who went undrafted out of Idaho a year ago, averaged 9.6 PPG, 3.4 RPG, and 3.0 APG on .440/.407/.667 shooting during his final college season in 2017/18.

The 24-year-old is close with Bulls guard Zach LaVine, who reportedly asked Chicago to consider Callandret for a spot on their Summer League roster earlier this year. The Bulls did end up taking Callandret to Las Vegas, where he appeared in four Summer League games for the club. Now, he has signed his first NBA contract with the team.

Callandret is unlikely to earn a spot on Chicago’s regular season roster, but the fact that the Bulls were willing to sign him to an NBA contract suggests they may want him on their G League roster this season. Assuming his deal is an Exhibit 10 contract, he’d be eligible for a bonus of up to $50K if he’s waived by Chicago and then spends at least two months with the Windy City Bulls.
