Draft Rumors: Porzingis, Wood, Dawson

At least one GM is among the multiple executives who believe Latvian power forward Kristaps Porzingis has a shot to be drafted as highly as No. 2, reports Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com. The head of basketball ops for another team said that he’s a “lock” for the top five and that it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go within the top three, adding that he’d draft him in front of Jahlil Okafor, the Duke center who occupied the top spot in projections for most of the season. The 19-year-old is No. 5 in Chad Ford’s ESPN.com rankings and No. 8 with Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress. Here’s more as draft rumors kick into high gear:

Christian Wood, a power forward out of UNLV, is hoping to follow in Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s footsteps as a ball-handler with unusual height and length, Howard-Cooper writes in the same piece. The Bucks intend to interview Wood, Virginia small forward Justin Anderson and others today, tweets Gery Woelfel of The Journal Times.
Both the DraftExpress team and Ford go in depth on the measurements from the combine, with Ford, in his Insider-only piece, noting that most top prospects sized up well and that this year’s draft class is among the longest groups in memory in terms of both height and wingspan.
Michigan State power forward Branden Dawson has interviewed with the Wizards, Clippers and Pelicans at the draft combine, as he told Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. Ellis, in the same report, adds Stanley Johnson, Frank Kaminsky and Rashad Vaughn to the list of prospects with whom the Pistons have spoken.
Terry Rozier met with the Pistons, too, as well as the Mavs, Suns, Knicks and Spurs, reports Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders (on Twitter).

Northwest Notes: Vaughn, Blake, Huestis

All five Northwest Division teams are out of the playoffs, so they can focus fully this week on the predraft combine in Chicago. It precedes next week’s lottery, when the Timberwolves, Nuggets, Jazz and Thunder all have varying chances at the No. 1 overall pick. Here’s the latest from the Northwest:

The Wolves will be one of at least a dozen teams to interview draft prospect Rashad Vaughn at this week’s combine, reports Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities (Twitter link). The former UNLV shooting guard is the 36th-best prospect as Chad Ford of ESPN.com ranks them, and he comes in 41st with Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.
Steve Blake quietly helped the Blazers bench this season, developing on-court chemistry with fellow 2014 offseason pickup Chris Kaman, but the point guard’s playing time diminished toward the end and his playoff struggles were profound, as The Oregonian’s Mike Richman examines. Blake said in February that his plan was to pick up his player option for next season, worth more than $2.17MM.
Josh Huestis, last year’s 29th overall pick, expressed a willingness to play another season in the D-League as he spoke with Scott Mansch of the Great Falls Tribune. The Thunder reached an unusual predraft agreement in which Huestis promised to spend last season in the D-League in exchange for Oklahoma City taking him in the first round. His continued patience further sets him apart, as Keith Schlosser of Ridiculous Upside examines.

Rashad Vaughn Declares For Draft

APRIL 8TH: Vaughn announced today that he is entering the draft with a video message on his YouTube account (hat tip to Zagoria).

MARCH 27TH: 2:29pm: Vaughn took to Twitter to deny that he’s decided to turn pro (hat tip to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv). Still, it’s common for underclassmen to issue such denials after they’ve made up their minds but before they’ve made a formal announcement, so we’ll wait to see what path Vaughn takes.

1:59pm: UNLV freshman shooting guard Rashad Vaughn is planning to declare for entry into this year’s draft, league sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Teammate Christian Wood, a sophomore power forward, is seriously considering early entry, too, Wojnarowski also hears. Vaughn is the 56th-ranked prospect in Jonathan Givony’s DraftExpress rankings and 48th in Givony’s mock draft. Chad Ford of ESPN.com ranks him 63rd, though Wojnarowski writes that Vaughn has a chance to become a first-round pick if he performs well in workouts leading up to the draft. Wood is more well-regarded, checking in at No. 23 on Givony’s board and 33rd with Ford.

The 6’5″ Vaughn averaged 17.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 32.3 minutes per game for the Runnin’ Rebels this season, with 38.3% three-point shooting. The 18-year-old, who turns 19 in August, saw action in 23 games despite missing 10 because of a knee injury, as Wojnarowski notes. Vaughn was a sought-after recruit coming out of high school last year, when he was the 10th-ranked player in the Recruiting Services Consensus Index, a few spots ahead of lottery prospect Justise Winslow, among others.

UNLV finished only 18-15 in spite of the presence of Vaughn and Wood, with the team’s season ending in its conference tournament. Anthony Bennett was the most notable name to come from the school in recent years, and he’s struggled to live up to having been the surprise No. 1 overall draft pick of the Cavaliers in 2013.

And-Ones: Towns, Okafor, Vaughn, Jazz

Duke center Jahlil Okafor has long been considered the favorite to become the top pick in the 2015 draft, but for the first time since Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress has been compiling his prospect rankings for this year, he’s slipped to No. 2, as Givony notes via Twitter. That means Kentucky forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns has overtaken Okafor in his rankings as well as the ones Chad Ford of ESPN.com puts together. Of course, there’s still nearly three months to go until draft night, and much can change between now and then. It nonetheless sets up what would surely be a dream matchup in the NCAA tournament final for NBA scouts and executives if Kentucky and Duke are to win their respective semifinals on Saturday. UNLV freshman shooting guard Rashad Vaughn has signed with agent Omar Wilkes of Octagon Sports, according to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress (Twitter link). Vaughn last week denied a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports that he was planning to declare for the draft, but signing with an agent wouldn’t allow him to return to school, which suggests that Vaughn is indeed draft-bound.
