Rockets Notes: Smith, Henderson, Thompson, Free Agency

Rockets forward Jabari Smith understands why he wasn’t a first-team selection on the All-Rookie Team, but he plans to use it as motivation for next season, writes Dionysis Aravantinos of HoopsHype. It took Smith a while to adjust to the NBA, especially in terms of his outside shot, but he improved as the season progressed. He said all five first-team members deserve their spots, but he’s disappointed to miss out on a preseason goal.

Smith was considered the favorite to be taken No. 1 for most of last year’s pre-draft process, but the Magic made a late switch to Paolo Banchero and the Thunder picked Chet Holmgren second. Smith said he’s not bitter about slipping to Houston at third.

“I definitely use it as extra motivation, but as far as a disappointment … no,” he said. “Still the best day of my life up to this point. I was mad at the moment, but looking back on it, it’s nothing to feel bad about. It’s a business, stuff that goes into it, and that’s the decision they made.”

Smith also discussed the rumors that James Harden is interested in returning to the Rockets in free agency. He said his sales pitch to Harden would be to “come back home” and believes Houston could be competitive with Harden joining Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and himself.

“I feel like the sky’s the limit with a lineup like that,” Smith said. “The challenge is there, but it’d be on us to put it all together.”

  • The Rockets tried to convince Scoot Henderson to work out in Houston, but haven’t had success so far, a source tells Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Henderson has stated that he only plans to audition for the Hornets and Trail Blazers, which he has already done. Fischer points out that Houston’s interest in Henderson doesn’t fit with the rumors about Harden, who would become the lead guard if he joins the team. Fischer adds that the Rockets don’t have enough veteran talent on their roster to trade up to No. 2 or 3 to improve their chances of landing the G League Ignite star.
  • Amen Thompson had an impressive workout for the Rockets this week, Kelly Iko states in the latest mock draft from The Athletic. Thompson showcased his athleticism and playmaking skills during the session, and Iko sees him as a great fit alongside Green and Smith.
  • Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle examines potential free agent targets for Houston, which could have roughly $60MM to spend when the market opens.

Windhorst: Damian Lillard Trade Market Is Quiet

Damian Lillard speculated about possible trade destinations in a Showtime interview last week, but he and the Trail Blazers appear committed to continuing their partnership, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said Wednesday during an appearance on “Get Up” (video link).

Asked whether Lillard is likely to be on a different team at the start of next season, Windhorst said he doesn’t expect that to happen “as of right now.”

“They publicly haven’t sounded like they want to trade him. I can tell you privately the Blazers aren’t interested in trading him right now either,” Windhorst explained. “I have to underline ‘right now’ because we’re in a fluid situation.”

The fluidity stems from Lillard’s desire to see Portland trade its first-round pick for veteran help rather than bringing in more young talent. Some lottery luck gave the Blazers the No. 3 selection, but Lillard emphasized in an interview after the regular season ended that he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuilding project.

Lillard alluded to that statement while talking to Showtime, saying the organization has “an opportunity, asset-wise, to build a team that can compete.” But he also made it clear that his philosophy on trading the pick hasn’t changed, adding, “If we can’t do that … then it’s a separate conversation we would have to have.”

Although that sounds like a message to management that he’ll want out if the pick isn’t dealt, Windhorst said the rumor mill is currently quiet regarding a potential Lillard trade.

“I am hearing nothing,” Windhorst added. “Nothing from the Dame side. Nothing from the Blazers’ side formally that he doesn’t want to be there.”

If the Blazers keep their pick, they are expected to take either Brandon Miller or Scoot Henderson, whichever player is left on the board after Charlotte’s selection at No. 2. Although they’re high-level prospects who might be able to contribute right away, they’re both 19, which Windhorst points out is the exact situation that Lillard said he doesn’t want to be part of.

Pelicans Rumors: Henderson, Draft, Williamson, Ingram

Since Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Pelicans have explored the possibility of trying to acquire a top-three pick in the draft in order to snag G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson, multiple NBA journalists – including Brian Windhorst of ESPN (YouTube link) and Substack writer Marc Stein – have confirmed New Orleans’ interest in Henderson.

The Pelicans like the idea of adding a more “traditional play-maker” to their roster after having CJ McCollum serve as the de facto point guard last season, according to Stein, who adds that New Orleans is “undeniably drawn” to Henderson.

Appearing on ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday, Windhorst said the Pelicans’ interest in moving up from No. 14 in the draft has rival teams speculating about whether former No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson will hit the trade block.

“The Pelicans have had some cursory discussions (about moving up), from what I’ve been told. There haven’t been any offers made necessarily yet,” Windhorst said. “But it makes you really not take too far of a leap to wonder – and the league is certainly wondering – if the Pelicans are going to make, for the first time truly, Zion Williamson available ahead of next week’s draft. To get up to that level in the top five, you’d have to consider a player of this caliber.

“… I don’t know if anything’s going to truly develop there, but I think it’s fair to say based on my conversations, there’s an eye being kept toward whether the Pelicans would make Zion Williamson available.”

Stein has heard similar speculation and spoke to one “well-placed” source who believes that the Pelicans would be prepared to move Williamson if it meant they could land Henderson.

According to Stein, that source cited a “rising level of exasperation” in New Orleans about Zion’s injury history and his overall approach. The former Duke star has appeared in just 114 games in his first four NBA seasons due to a variety of health issues.

Of course, even if the Pelicans are willing to trade Williamson, it’s not clear whether the Hornets would be willing to give up the No. 2 overall pick in a deal for him, given not just his injury issues but his maximum-salary contract, which will go into effect this year.

A second source who spoke to Stein predicted that Charlotte would turn down an offer centered around the No. 2 pick and Williamson, though Stein notes that Hornets governor Michael Jordan may like the idea of acquiring a Jordan Brand star.

It’s possible the Trail Blazers would have interest in Williamson, Stein writes, but if the Blazers decide to trade the No. 3 pick, they’d likely prefer to acquire a star with a better track record of availability. It’s also not a lock that Henderson would be available for New Orleans if the team traded up to No. 3, since Charlotte could take him instead of Alabama’s Brandon Miller.

As we relayed earlier today, Jonathan Givony of ESPN.com wrote within his latest mock draft that the top of the draft could get a shake-up if the Pelicans include Brandon Ingram in an offer for the No. 2 pick, but Givony cautioned that it’s too early to say whether New Orleans would be willing to do so. For what it’s worth, Stein says his read right now is that the Pels would be less inclined to move Ingram than Williamson.

Draft Rumors: Trades, Hornets, Blazers, Whitmore, Pistons, Mavs, More

The Lakers, Warriors, Nets, Grizzlies, and Pacers are among the teams with draft picks in the back half of the first round who are believed to be exploring trade scenarios, Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo report within their latest mock draft for ESPN.com (Insider link).

According to Givony, the Lakers are especially interested in talking to teams that hold multiple picks, which suggests they may be open to trading down from No. 17 in order to acquire an extra selection or two. The Warriors are looking into the possibility of moving up from No. 19 by moving a young player like Jonathan Kuminga, sources tell ESPN.

The Nets, who hold the Nos. 21 and 22 picks, are investigating whether they might be able to move into the lottery or the middle of the first round by packaging those two selections, according to Givony, who says Memphis (No. 25) is another team seeking opportunities to move into the late lottery or mid-first round.

As for the Pacers, they have a lottery pick at No. 7 and are thought to be interested in adding an “explosive, defensive-minded power forward,” so Givony has them selecting Jarace Walker in that spot, noting that Ausar Thompson and Taylor Hendricks are also very much on their radar. Indiana also controls the 26th, 29th, and 32nd overall picks and has been engaged in trade discussions about those selections. It seems unlikely the club will use all of them, per Woo.

Here’s more from ESPN’s two draft experts:

  • Scoot Henderson had a “highly impressive” workout with the Hornets over the weekend, but Brandon Miller still looks like the favorite to be the pick at No. 2, says Givony. If a team like the Pelicans were willing to include an impact player such as Brandon Ingram in an offer for the second overall pick, that could shake up the top of the draft, but it’s still too early to say whether that’s a realistic possibility, according to Givony.
  • While the Trail Blazers continue to explore trade opportunities at No. 3 and have done due diligence by working out prospects outside of the consensus top three, they seem content to select either Henderson or Miller if they hang onto the pick, Givony reports.
  • Villanova forward Cam Whitmore is receiving consideration from the Rockets at No. 4 and is viewed as one of the leading candidates to be drafted there, along with Amen Thompson, says Woo. If he’s not picked fourth overall, Whitmore seems like a good bet to go fifth, Givony writes, given the makeup of the Pistons‘ roster.
  • Givony suggests that a trade of Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic for Mavericks wing Tim Hardaway Jr. and the No. 10 pick is one scenario that could be “in play.” Based on Givony’s wording, it’s unclear whether that offer has been put on the table by either team or if it has even been seriously considered. But the specific terms suggest it has at least been discussed.
  • Arkansas guard Anthony Black has worked out – or will work out – for several lottery teams, including the Magic (Nos. 6 and 11), Jazz (Nos. 9 and 16), and Mavericks (No. 10), says Woo. The ESPN mock has Black being drafted at No. 8 by the Wizards, who are said to be focused primarily on backcourt players.
  • The Raptors are believed to be a “strong suitor” for Kansas wing Gradey Dick, according to Givony, though there’s also speculation that Toronto could be major movers on the trade market and might not end up picking at No. 13.
  • The Jazz (Nos. 9 and 16) and Thunder (No. 12) sent decision-makers to Europe this week to watch French wing Bilal Coulibaly in the LNB Pro A playoffs, according to Woo, who has Coulibaly coming off the board at No. 14 to the Pelicans in ESPN’s mock.

Draft Notes: Rockets, Thompsons, Black, Green Room Invites, Osunniyi, Burton

The Rockets hold the No. 4 pick and they were visited this week by three candidates who could potentially be selected at that spot. The Overtime Elite brother duo of Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson and Arkansas’ Anthony Black met with Houston’s brass. Amen and Ausar are currently ranked No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, on ESPN’s Best Available list with Black slotted at No. 8. The Thompsons reportedly met recently with the Pistons, who hold the No. 5 pick. They’ve also visited the Hornets (No. 2) and Trail Blazers (No. 3). There has been much less intel on Black’s pre-draft visits.

Southeast Draft Notes: Miller, Hornets, Council, Smith

The Hornets hold the No. 2 pick and Alabama forward Brandon Miller will work out for them on Tuesday, Ashley Stroehlein of WCNC tweets. Miller and G League guard Scoot Henderson are the top contenders to be chosen at the No. 2 spot. It was previously reported that Miller was scheduled to work out for Charlotte on Tuesday and the plans obviously didn’t change. In fact, he has already arrived in Charlotte.

Pelicans Looking To Move Up Draft, Eye Scoot Henderson

The Pelicans are looking to trade up to the No. 2 or No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 draft with their sights set on G League guard Scoot Henderson, Shams Charania of The Stadium and The Athletic reports (Twitter video link).

New Orleans is among several teams seriously pursuing that No. 2 overall pick, according to Charania. The Hornets hold the No. 2 selection and worked out Henderson on Sunday. The 6’2″ guard averaged 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals for the Ignite in 19 games this season. Henderson’s spotty 3-point shooting (27.5%) didn’t hurt his draft stock. He was shut down in mid-March by the Ignite.

New Orleans already has CJ McCollum at the point, though he could swing to the shooting guard spot as he did in Portland. The Pelicans drafted Dyson Daniels with the No. 8 pick last June, but Daniels posted modest stats in 59 games during his first NBA season. They also have Kira Lewis Jr., a 2020 lottery pick who returned from a major knee injury to appear in 25 games this season.

The Pelicans hold the No. 14 pick and have a bevy of future first-rounders owed to them, which they could dangle to Charlotte or the Trail Blazers, who hold the No. 3 selection. The Lakers owe New Orleans their unprotected 2024 first-rounder, which can be deferred until 2025. The Bucks owe the Pelicans their unprotected 2027 first-round pick. New Orleans also has the right to swap 2024 and 2026 first-rounders with Milwaukee.

Beyond those draft assets and McCollum, the Pelicans could offer either of their other stars (Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram) or some other young talents (Trey Murphy III, Herbert Jones). It remains to be seen what type of package the Hornets (or Blazers) would pursue in order to part with their high lottery pick.

Trail Blazers Offering No. 3 Pick, Simons In Exchange For Star?

Numerous trade rumors are circulating about Damian Lillard, but league sources tell Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer that the Trail Blazers are more inclined to keep Lillard and try to build a contender around him.

According to O’Connor, Portland’s front office is exploring deals involving the No. 3 pick in the draft and would be willing to move Anfernee Simons as well. O’Connor names the Celtics‘ Jaylen Brown, the Raptors‘ Pascal Siakam and the Nets‘ Mikal Bridges as targets that would make sense for that package, but he also cautions that the Blazers might decide to keep their pick.

Simons is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 21.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 62 games. The 24-year-old shooting guard has three seasons left on his four-year, $100MM extension.

The No. 3 pick also carries significant value in a draft that is projected to have three top players. Brandon Miller is widely expected to be taken second by Charlotte, leaving G League star Scoot Henderson available for any team that wants to deal for the third choice. However, Miller and Henderson could easily flip places.

In an interview this week, Lillard identified the Heat and Nets as teams he would be interested in joining if he requests a trade. O’Connor offers a few other suggestions, including the Raptors, who reportedly talked to Portland about an OG Anunoby deal last summer and again before the February deadline. O’Connor also mentions the Grizzlies if they decide to unload Ja Morant or teams rich in draft picks such as the Pelicans, Rockets and Spurs.

Lillard has stated repeatedly that he wants to compete for a championship, and O’Connor believes his best chance to reach that goal is to accept a trade. However, it appears the Blazers are going to make an effort to create an instant contender before they consider that option.

Draft Notes: Henderson, Top Prospects, Magic, Pacers, Jazz

In a short written piece alongside a longer video for The Players’ Tribune, G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson details how his father helped him develop into the player he has become. Henderson, who is projected a top-three pick for the upcoming 2023 NBA draft, also explains his desire to achieve greatness.

“I want this,” Henderson writes. “I don’t ever want somebody to think they’re better than me. All of my idols have a killer mentality. Kobe (Bryant), (Russell) Westbrook, (Stephen) Curry…. I’ve always admired players with a drive that takes them beyond what the average person is willing to do to succeed. I think you have to be kind of crazy, if I’m being honest. All the greats are. And my dad wanted me to know that.

“I want to go beyond what it takes to be in the league. I’m not just looking for a roster spot — I’m searching for greatness. So, no, actually … with all respect to my dad…. I don’t just want this. I need this. See you at the draft.”

Here are a few more notes on the draft:

  • While Victor Wembanyama, Henderson and Brandon Miller are widely considered the draft’s “big three,” that doesn’t mean they’ll ultimately be the three best NBA players. Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo of ESPN.com (Insider link) examine four prospects who could feasibly become one of the draft’s top three players down the line, weighing the pros and cons of each player as well as their ideal fits with teams. At the top of the list is Overtime Elite’s Amen Thompson, whose explosive athleticism, body control, ability to change speeds, vision and defensive flashes give him the highest upside in the draft outside of Wembanyama, according to Givony. Thompson is ranked No. 4 on ESPN’s big board, but Givony believes the Wizards (No. 8) or Jazz (No. 9) might be the best long-term situations for the young guard.
  • In the latest aggregate mock draft for HoopsHype, Michael Scotto reports that rival teams believe the Magic might be open to packaging their two lottery picks (Nos. 6 and 11) in order to move into the 3-5 range. According to Scotto, the Pacers might gauge the value of the No. 7 pick in a potential win-now move for a forward, while the Mavericks have been shopping their own lottery pick, 10th overall, in an effort to find an impact veteran.
  • As Rafael Barlowe of NBA Big Board writes, although rivals front offices have been expecting the Jazz to pursue a point guard with their lottery pick, there are rumors they might target French wing Bilal Coulibaly instead. Coulibaly has been shining in the LNB Pro A playoffs alongside his Metropolitans 92 teammate, Wembanyama. Barlowe also hears the Jazz are high on Tennessee wing Julian Phillips, whose stock is rising after strong measurements and athletic testing at the draft combine. Utah controls three first-rounders: Nos. 9, 16 and 28.

G League Ignite point guard Scoot Henderson is scheduled to come in on Sunday, while Alabama forward Brandon Miller will visit on Tuesday. A trio of prospects also rated among the top 10 on most draft boards are also working out for the Hornets in the near future. Twins brothers Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson of Overtime Elite will work out on Friday. Villanova forward Cam Whitmore is scheduled to come in on June 17.
