Rockets Waive Scott Machado

The Rockets have released rookie guard Scott Machado, reports Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). Machado had been on a partially guaranteed contract, and his departure will open up a roster spot for Patrick Beverley. Beverley has already signed a deal with the Rockets, and will officially be added to the roster once he receives FIBA clearance.

As a first-year player, Machado would have made a full-season salary of $473,604 had his deal been guaranteed for the season. The contract had a 50% guarantee on it, so the 22-year-old will receive $236,802 from Houston. Machado will be one of a handful of players being paid by the Rockets but no longer on the roster, as Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors explored this weekend.

If Machado clears waivers and can't find an NBA deal, the Rockets would likely have interest in seeing him on their D-League affiliate, tweets Feigen.

D-League Notes: Joseph, Machado, Selby, Wroten

Today's D-League assignments and recalls…

  • The Celtics announced they have assigned Kris Joseph to the Maine Red Claws for a fourth time this season. In his previous stints in the D-League, the 6'7" rookie has averaged 20.9 points and 6.0 rebounds over seven contests. He may be back with Boston as early as Sunday, since he expects to join the Celtics on their upcoming road trip, according to Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com (Twitter link). 
  • The Rockets made their recall of Scott Machado official, according to a release from the team.
  • The Grizzlies have recalled Josh Selby from the Reno Bighorns, tweets Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Selby looked sharp in his two-game D-League stint, averaging 22.0 points, 7.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds after he was assigned to Reno on Monday. Rookie Tony Wroten will likely be sent to the Bighorns in place of Selby for the next eight games, according to Tillery (Twitter link).
  • The Rockets will recall Scott Machado from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers today, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter).  The 6'1" guard averaged 12.0 PPG and 7.1 APG for the Vipers in eleven games.
  • The Nets announced that they have recalled Toko Shengelia and Tyshawn Taylor from the Springfield Armor of the D-League.  The two rookies were assigned to Springfield yesterday. Neither player has seen significant playing time for the Nets this season.  Taylor showed off his offensive skills last night for the Armor when he posted 32 points off of 13-28 shooting.  Shengalia had a triple-double with 22 points, 12 dimes, and ten boards.

Rockets Assign Jones, Machado To D-League

Terrence Jones and Scott Machado are heading to the Rockets' D-League affiliate, the team announced today. Machado will join the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for the second time this season, while for Jones it's his first D-League assignment.

Jones, 20, has appeared in seven contests for the Rockets so far in his rookie season, averaging 3.6 PPG and 2.0 RPG in 10.4 MPG. The 18th overall pick in the 2012 draft is one of a handful of mid-first-rounders to be assigned to the D-League this week — No. 12 pick Jeremy Lamb and No. 13 pick Kendall Marshall have also been sent to their teams' respective D-League affiliates in the last couple days.

Machado, meanwhile, finally made his NBA regular-season debut on Wednesday night against the Thunder. He was recalled from the Valley Vipers earlier this week, along with Donatas Motiejunas.

Rockets Recall Scott Machado From D-League

A day after recalling Donatas Motiejunas from their D-League affiliate, the Rockets have brought their other assignee back as well. Houston has recalled Scott Machado from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).

Machado, who has yet to make his NBA debut with the Rockets, played two games for the Valley Vipers, averaging 16.0 PPG, 8.0 APG, and 5.0 RPG.

Daryl Morey Talks D-League, Rookies

Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey attended a Rio Grande Vipers game this week to scout the talent on his team's D-League squad, and talked to Yannis Kotroupis of HoopsWorld.com. Among the topics he discussed was the importance of the D-League to the Rockets' player-development system:

“We consider it one of our key assets,” Morey said to HOOPSWORLD. “We have a great partnership. I think overtime people are going to see minor league basketball like Triple A baseball. It’s not much different than Major League Baseball where most players are one step away from the pros. The first three or four guys on every D-League bench are really not different from guys 11-15 on NBA benches. The quality of basketball is super high, way higher than college basketball. Pretty much every D-League team would have a chance to challenge for a NCAA title. These are really great teams playing every night and I think over time people are going to see how high the quality is.”

Among the players on the Vipers who impressed Morey the most was Lithuanian big man Donatas Motiejunas:

“[Motiejuans] a very skilled offensive player so we’re hoping shows that and I think he really did show that in the first half here,” Morey said. “We’re focused on him a getting a lot of minutes so he can get his game shape up cause we want to see him impact in transition at our level and this level. We want to see him as he gets tired continue to impact the game defensively, rebounding wise and be solid on defense without fouling. And, it’s overtime. It’s not overnight. We want him to get stronger, deal with stronger guys in the NBA. There’s quite a few bigs down here like a Jeff Adrien on his own team, but on other teams where he can get a real good sense going against these bigger, stronger guys than he’s faced in the past.”

Morey was also happy with what he saw from undrafted rookie point guard Scott Machado, and touched on the team's plans for him:

“Scott is a guy we really believe in,” Morey said. “The highest assist guy I think in 20 years in college basketball. Really skilled passer. Obviously he has has, we look for a guy with an elite skill in one area and then see if they can round it out in other areas. I think his time with the Vipers were really going to see can he take that passing an elite skill and add to it defense, rebounding and getting his own offense, things like that. Overtime we’ll see that but we really think he’s a great prospect for us going forward.”

Morey also denied reports that the team had intended to send embattled rookie forward Royce White to the D-League, saying he's optimistic the two parties can sort out their issues.

Western Notes: Lakers, Howard, Bell

During an interview at the Lakers practice facility today, Mike D'Antoni acknowledged that his job will be to compete for a championship this season and added, "I told the team if we're not averaging 110-115 points a game, we need to talk." Zach Harper of CBS Sports relayed a plethora of other notable quotes as the new Lakers coach touched upon the offensive freedom he plans to give his players, the promise he sees in the second unit, and the notion that maximizing the amount of possessions per game will help offset one bad shot or bad call affecting the final outcome. Here's more of what we've heard tonight out of the Western Conference: 

  • Dwight Howard told reporters that he is playing at about "75-80%" and still needs to get his explosiveness back to where he can sustain it over longer stretches of the game (Arash Markazi of ESPN LA tweets). 
  • Marc Stein of ESPN mentions that Raja Bell would naturally be a target for the Lakers to pursue at this point, but him still being under contract with the Jazz, Los Angeles' $100MM payroll and a full roster remain as the most significant obstacles in their way (Twitter link). 
  • The Suns approach to rebuilding includes stockpiling assets and being prepared for circumstances in which a good player may become available via trade, similar to how Houston was able to acquire James Harden from Oklahoma City, writes Sean Deveney of the Sporting News. 
  • Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group (Sulia link) reports that Warriors center Andrew Bogut has received multiple injections of Regenokine in his left ankle to help with his overall recovery process. 
  • Keith Schlosser of Ridiculous Upside explains why a trip to the D-League for Scott Machado will be a golden opportunity for him to garner attention as a strong talent, something that would have been difficult without any significant playing time on the Rockets.

Rockets Assign Motiejunas, Machado To D-League

WEDNESDAY, 10:02am: The Rockets have assigned Motiejunas and Machado to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, according to RealGM.com's transactions log. Given White's uncertain status, it appears he hasn't been officially signed to Houston's D-League affiliate at this point. As Hoops Rumors' Chuck Myron pointed out last night, NBA teams were previously limited to assigning two players at a time to D-League affiliates, so it's not clear whether that affects White's situation or if the rule has changed.

MONDAY, 10:47pm: The Rockets are sending Royce White, Donatas Motiejunas, and Scott Machado to their NBA D-League affiliate, according to Mark Berman of FOX 26 (via Twitter).  Of the three players, Motiejunas is the only one to have logged NBA minutes with five minutes of play last night against the Pistons.

White, the 16th overall pick in the 2012 draft, picked up national attention for his unexpected absence from Rockets training camp over the summer.  It turns out that the forward was struggling with anxiety issues, including a fear of flying.  Later in the week, the two sides worked out an agreement in which White could travel to a portion of road games via bus rather than fly with the team.

Texas Notes: Spurs, Lin, Rockets, Holloway

We rounded up news from the Mavericks earlier today as they continue their European tour, but there's still more from the Lone Star state, where the Spurs, with an 18-to-1 shot, are the most likely of the three Texas teams to win the championship, according to odds released today by the Bovada sports book.

  • The Spurs have announced Sean Marks as their new director of basketball operations and GM of the Austin Toros, their D-League affiliate.
  • The Rockets' commitment of more than $25MM to Jeremy Lin, a player with a tiny sample size of success whom the Knicks passed on keeping, says much about the team's inability to break out of a cycle of mediocrity, Fran Blinebury of Rockets.com writes.
  • With 11 players eligible to be sent down to the D-League at some point this season, Gino Pilato of Ridiculous Upside examines how the Rio Grande Valley Vipers will play a key role in player development this season for the Rockets, their parent club. Pilato notes Scott Machado and Kyle Fogg have given their blessing to D-League assignments this season if the Rockets want to send them down.

Rockets To Sign Scott Machado

SATURDAY, 11:36am: The contract is structured as a two-year deal with a team option in year three, tweets Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.

TUESDAY, 6:58pm: The Rockets will sign undrafted point guard Scott Machado, reports Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. Machado was a part of Houston's summer league team in Las Vegas after going undrafted out of Iona this June. The deal will be partially guaranteed and cover three years, and probably won't be for much more than the minimum.

Machado will join a crowded Rockets roster that will include 20 players once the signing becomes official, which most likely will take place on Thursday, Feigen says. The team waived Sean Williams last week, but Houston will have to make more moves before the regular season starts to get down to the 15-player limit. Since Machado's contract includes at least a partial guarantee, he's unlikely to be waived, and by rule he can't be traded until December 15th. He'll compete with Courtney Fortson, Toney Douglas and Shaun Livingston for minutes behind starting point guard Jeremy Lin.

Machado averaged 13.6 points and 9.9 assists for Iona this year, beating out Kendall Marshall's average of 9.7 to lead the nation in assists per game. In five summer league contests for the Rockets, he notched 8.0 PPG and 5.6 PPG, including 20 points in one game and 10 assists in another. Last week, a report indicated he was drawing overseas interest, but it looks like Machado will remain stateside for 2012/13.
