Sean Williams

Knicks Considering Sean Williams

The Knicks are considering signing forward/center Sean Williams, a source familiar with the Knicks' free-agency plans told Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com.  The big man was waived by the Rockets earlier this week before his $916K salary would have become guaranteed for 2012/13.

Yesterday we learned that the Timberwolves are also interested in Williams' services, though David Kahn is said to be talking to a number of agents.  Anthony Tolliver, Mehmet Okur, and Hassan Whiteside are said to be among Minnesota's other targets in the frontcourt.

The report also notes that while there has been some speculation that the Knicks are interested in Josh Howard, a source says that's not the case.  The Bobcats and Bulls have also been linked to the 32-year-old, but Charlotte's interest was termed "exploratory" at this stage.

Timberwolves Eyeing Sean Williams

The Timberwolves are still scouring the free agent market for potential additions, and the latest name to be linked to David Kahn and the T-Wolves is Sean Williams, tweets Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500. According to Wolfson, Williams is a potential target for the Wolves, though he cautions that Kahn is talking to a lot of agents. Given Kahn's activity, Wolfson expects the team to sign another big man at some point before the season, he says in a second tweet.

Williams, 25, was waived by the Rockets earlier this week, but appears to have gone unclaimed, making him an unrestricted free agent. Because the big man was part of the trade that sent Courtney Lee to the Celtics, he's ineligible to re-sign with the Celtics until next July, but he's free to sign with any other NBA team, including Minnesota.

The T-Wolves are also said to be eyeing Anthony Tolliver, Mehmet Okur, and Hassan Whiteside as potential frontcourt targets. If the Wolves hope to sign any player for more than the minimum salary, they'll likely have to move salary in a separate deal to clear cap room.

Rockets Waive Sean Williams

The Rockets have waived center Sean Williams, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (via Twitter).  Houston acquired Williams in the three-team Courtney Lee sign-and-trade deal last month.

Houston formally made the move on Monday in advance of August 30th, when his $916K salary would have become guaranteed for next season.  Stein notes (via Twitter) that the Heat have expressed interest in Williams in the past and are likely to consider him again as they are in the market for bigs.

Williams, 25, fell to the Nets in the 2007 draft and was tabbed with the 17th overall selection.  The shot blocking specialist was considered to be a lottery-level talent but had a number of red flags surrounding him which led to his dismissal from the Boston College basketball program.  Williams has since played in China, Puerto Rico, Israel, and the D-League before having cups of coffee with the Mavericks and Celtics.

Celtics Acquire Courtney Lee

5:49pm: The second-round picks the Blazers will get are both for 2013, tweets Joe Freeman of The Oregonian. They'll receive the Celtics' own selection, along with the Timberwolves' pick that the C's acquired in an earlier deal. Freeman also passes along word from Blazers GM Neil Olshey, who says he is hopeful Pavlovic will make the team out of camp (Twitter link). Freeman confirms, via Twitter, that the Celtics will send the Blazers cash to cover Pavlovic's salary, which will likely be the veteran's minimum. Pavlovic's 2012/13 contract is non-guaranteed, so he could be waived without the Blazers taking a cap hit, Freeman confirms in an email to Hoops Rumors.

4:05pm: In making their own official announcement about the trade, the Trail Blazers noted that they'll acquire two future second-rounders from the Celtics, rather than just one (Twitter link).

2:12pm: The Rockets have officially announced the Lee sign-and-trade agreement in a press release. Based on the team's announcement and a tweet from Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, the deal looks like this:

According to ESPN.com's John Hollinger (via Twitter), Lee will earn exactly $5MM in his first year, making his total contract worth the same as the maximum mid-level exception (four years, $21.35MM). The Rockets, meanwhile, are expected to waive Moore and Williams in the very near future. Diebler, the player whose rights Houston receives from Portland, was selected by the Blazers 51st overall in 2011 and spent last season overseas.

Odds & Ends: Horford, 2014, Celtics, Hudson, Cavs

Hawks center Al Horford will return from a pectoral injury on Thursday after saying earlier today he thought he would miss the playoffs, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

As Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal Constitution writes, Horford's comments over the last few days sent mixed signals on his playoff eligibility, so this latest development shouldn't come as too much of surprise. Still, it's a huge boost for the Hawks, even though he'll be limited to 15 minutes a game in the first round. Atlanta's frontcourt has been so depleted lately that Josh Smith started at center against the Knicks yesterday.

Here are a few more Monday links from around the league:

Celtics Sign Sean Williams, Waive Jermaine O’Neal

6:36pm: Williams joined his new teammates at shootaround today.  The BC product told the Boston Herald that he likes Boston and that he has matured since he was suspended twice in college:

“It’s not about my career – it’s more about my life and getting better in everything.  All of your experiences, you take them with you. Hopefully you make the best out of the next step you take, every day.

“I like Boston.  In the league you get to know everybody pretty well. I played summer ball with some of the guys, and I played with Keyon (Dooling) in New Jersey. Just try to come in and get to know everybody, get a feel for them, and hopefully they get a feel for you. I’ve talked to a lot of people, and this is a very tight-knit organization led by Doc and KG, and the key is to fall in line and follow those leaders. Then you work hard every day.”

9:38am: The Celtics have officially signed Sean Williams and waived Jermaine O'Neal, the team announced in a press release. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported yesterday that the pair of roster moves was expected.

Williams, 25, spent most of the season with the Mavericks before he was waived to clear a roster spot for Kelenna Azubuike. The Mavs shuttled Williams back and forth between their NBA squad and their D-League affiliate, the Texas Legends. While the big man appeared in just eight games for Dallas, he played 27 games for the Legends, averaging 15.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in 28.8 minutes per game. Because he was waived prior to the March buyout deadline, Williams will be eligible for the postseason and will provide frontcourt depth for the Celtics.

O'Neal underwent surgery on his left wrist in March, sidelining him for the season. Since he was in the last year of his contract, there was no reason for the Celtics to keep him on the roster. He'll become a free agent and figures to sign with a new team this summer.

Celtics Close To Signing Sean Williams

With a notoriously depleted front court that's forced Kevin Garnett to man the center position, the Celtics are close to signing free agent center Sean Williams, according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein. To make room, Boston will waive Jermaine O'Neal

After playing eight games with Dallas earlier this season, Williams was waived by the Mavericks on March 22. The timing fortuitously came just one day before the league's deadline to give Williams eligibility to play beyond the regular season and into the playoffs for the Celtics.

With the foul prone Greg Stiemsma serving as Garnett's backup, and the recently signed Ryan Hollins filling in as the team's emergency big man, the signing of Williams gives Boston an athletic 25-year-old center to help in case the team suffers yet another injury during the postseason.

Minor Moves: Wright, Williams, Murray

We'll track the latest international and D-League-related transactions here:

  • The Warriors have recalled Chris Wright from their D-League affiliate, according to a team release. Wright had been assigned to the Dakota Wizards on March 24th for the second time this season.
  • Sean Williams is rejoining the Texas Legends for the rest of the D-League season, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Williams was waived by the Mavericks in March to make room for Kelenna Azubuike, but will return to the team's D-League affiliate, where he spent time earlier this season.
  • Former NBA veteran Flip Murray will sign with the D-League's Austin Toros, according to Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio (via Twitter). Murray played for eight NBA teams in eight seasons, last seeing NBA action with the Bulls in the 2010 playoffs. The 32-year-old averaged 9.9 points in 22.7 minutes per contest over the course of 487 career games.

Mavericks Waive Sean Williams

The Mavericks have requested waivers on Sean Williams, according to a team release. The move reduces the team's roster to 14 players.

Williams, 25, signed with the Mavs prior to the season on a two-year contract worth the minimum salary. While Dallas will be on the hook for the rest of his salary for this season, the second year of the deal was nonguaranteed.

Williams was up and down between the Mavericks and the team's D-League affiliate in Austin this season. The former 17th overall pick averaged 3.6 PPG and 1.6 RPG in eight contests for the Mavs, and 14.7 PPG, 8.5 RPG, and 2.5 BPG in 24 games for the D-League's Texas Legends.

With an empty roster spot, the Mavs could be eyeing a replacement for Williams. They reportedly had interest in Ryan Hollins, though it appears Hollins will sign with the Celtics.

Minor Moves: Songaila, Wright, Graham, Williams

We'll keep tabs on the day's notable international or D-League-related transactions here:

  • Darius Songaila, an eight-year NBA veteran who played 10 games for the 76ers last season, has signed with Spanish team CB Valladolid, tweets Sportando.
  • Former NBA players Antoine Wright and Stephen Graham have joined D-League teams, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter). Wright will play for Reno while Graham is heading to Fort Wayne.
  • The Mavericks have re-assigned Sean Williams to their D-League affiliate, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas. Williams had been recalled from the Texas Legends earlier this month.
