Heat Waive Liggins, McCree, Mitchell

Miami trimmed its roster to 17 players by waiving DeAndre Liggins, Erik McCree and Tony Mitchell, the team announced on its website.

Liggins signed with the Heat on Tuesday after being acquired and waived by the Hawks last month. He started Friday’s preseason game and scored five points. A two-time G League Defensive Player of the Year, Liggins will likely wind up with Miami’s affiliate in Sioux Falls if he clears waivers.

Mitchell, a 25-year-old power forward who signed with Miami on Thursday, has played 96 games for Sioux Falls since 2013. McCree, who inked a training camp deal in September, is a 23-year-old forward from Louisiana Tech.

With Derrick Walton on a two-way contract, Miami still has one more move to make to reach the roster limit. It’s possible that rookie guard Matt Williams‘ contract could be converted to a two-way deal.

Heat Waive Larry Drew II, Sign Tony Mitchell

The Heat have made a change to their roster, announcing today in a press release that they’ve waived guard Larry Drew II. Using the newly-opened roster spot, the club signed free agent forward Tony Mitchell.

Drew, who signed with the Heat last month, has been a regular contributor for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami’s G League affiliate, for the last several years, appearing in 96 games for the squad since 2013. He figures to return to Sioux Falls to open the 2017/18 campaign.

As for Mitchell, the Alabama alum had a brief NBA stint back in 2013/14, playing sparingly in three games for the Bucks. Since then, he has spent most of his time playing for teams overseas. Mitchell – not to be confused with the North Texas product who shares the same name and played for the Pistons in 2013/14 – also looks like a good bet to land with the Sioux Falls Skyforce at some point.

With the pair of roster moves, the Heat’s roster count remains at 20 players. Miami, which is carrying one player on a two-way contract, will need to eventually remove four players from its NBA roster to reach the 15-man maximum.

Tony Mitchell To Play In Italy

Former Bucks small forward Tony Mitchell has signed with Italy’s Aquila Basket Trento, the team announced (translation via Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia). The terms aren’t immediately clear, but it appears as though the 25-year-old is electing to head overseas rather than try to make an NBA opening-night roster through training camp.

Mitchell’s NBA experience is brief, having appeared for a total of just 10 minutes over three games in March on a 10-day contract with Milwaukee. The Bucks didn’t re-sign him, though it seemed as though the team had at least some degree of interest in doing so. The former University of Alabama mainstay also saw time in the D-League and China this past season, and he was a prolific scorer with the D-League Select Team in summer league last month, averaging 19.0 points in 30.4 minutes per game across five contests.

Mitchell is not to be confused with the Tony Mitchell who has a fully guaranteed contract with the Pistons for this season.

Eastern Notes: Bayless, Celtics, Bucks, Bobcats

Barring a remarkable turn of events, the Eastern Conference playoff field is set, and the only realistic uncertainty that remains is about how the teams will be seeded. Tonight’s Pacers–Heat clash will say much about which team ends up with the top seed, as Indiana will be either three games ahead or just one game up on Miami depending on the outcome. While we look forward to that, here’s what’s happening off the court around the East:

Jerryd Bayless said a week after arriving in Boston via trade that he’d like to remain with the Celtics beyond this season, and he reiterated that this week to Gary Dzen of Boston.com. Bayless will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
In a wide-ranging talk with season ticket holders earlier this week, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said the team will target a rim protector in the draft, notes Baxter Holmes of The Boston Globe.
Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel suggests there’s a decent chance that either Tony Mitchell or Chris Wright will return to the Bucks soon, depending on the performance of the newly signed D.J. Stephens (Twitter link). All three have received 10-day contracts from the team this month, and Gardner says the team will probably sign one of them to a longer deal.
The Bobcats are expected to receive a league-high $20MM in revenue sharing, Grantland’s Zach Lowe reports, with several other small-market teams in line for about $15MM. The increase in revenue the Bobcats have drawn via sponsorships is one advantage of fielding a team that competes for one of the last playoff spots rather than bottoming out in pursuit of a high draft pick, as Lowe explains.
Bobcats owner Michael Jordan doesn’t talk much about the team publicly, but he’s been heavily engaged behind the scenes in collective bargaining and revenue sharing discussions, as commissioner Adam Silver tells DeAntae Prince of The Sporting News.

Eastern Notes: Jackson, McRoberts, Hamilton

As Ric Bucher and Howard Beck of Bleacher Report discuss, it is impossible for the Knicks or anyone else to predict the success that Phil Jackson will have as team president because he simply has no track record in an NBA front office. While Beck speculates that Jackson’s guidance could have the same positive effect on Carmelo Anthony that it did on Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, Bucher points out that the NBA’s resident Zen Master has never had the best relationship with agents.

Let’s take a look at what else is happening around the Eastern Conference tonight:

The underpaid Josh McRoberts has the ability to opt out of his two-year deal and become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, writes Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, who adds that the Bobcats value the Duke product and should do everything they can to retain him.
Bonnell also confirms that the Bobcats worked out a group of players on Thursday, as we heard yesterday. While it doesn’t sound like he thinks the team have anything notable planned, Bonnell points out the forthcoming expiration of Justin Hamilton‘s 10-day contract and mentions the Heat as possible suitors for the 7-foot LSU product should Charlotte let him walk (via Twitter).
Bucks head coach Larry Drew indicated today that a decision has yet to be made on whether or not the team will sign Tony Mitchell to a second 10-day contract, tweets Charles Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Bucks initially added Mitchell from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on March 4.

Bucks Sign Tony Mitchell To 10-Day Contract

TUESDAY, 10:58am: The team officially announced the move, via Twitter.

MONDAY, 5:30pm: The Bucks are set to sign forward Tony Mitchell to a 10-day contract, sources tell Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). Mitchell has been with the D-League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

Mitchell is putting up averages of 19.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 21 games with Fort Wayne this season. It’s an encore of his 2012/13 campaign in which he put up 21.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest over 48 games. Mitchell, 24, was in camp with the Kings over the offseason but was unable to survive the final cut.

The 6’6″ forward is not to be confused with the Pistons’ 6’9″ forward of the same name. The Bucks’ Mitchell was a standout at Alabama while the Pistons forward made his name at North Texas.

Kings Waive Mitchell, N’Diaye, Reed

The Kings are the latest team to make roster cuts, announcing today in a press release that they've released Tony Mitchell, Hamady N'Diaye, and Willie Reed. The moves leave the Kings with 14 players under contract.

None of the three players received much playing time in the preseason, each averaging under two points per game in less than six minutes per contest. Since Mitchell, N'Diaye, and Reed were the only three Kings on non-guaranteed contracts, it appears all but certain that Sacramento will head into the season with its current 14-man roster.

Kings Sign Willie Reed, Cyril Awere

The Kings have officially announced their roster for training camp, and there are a couple of new names on the list, in addition to signees like Tony Mitchell and Hamady N'Diaye, which we already knew about. The team has also added a pair of bigs, Willie Reed and Cyril Awere, on non-guaranteed contracts.

Reed, 22, is a 6'9" forward that played his college ball at St. Louis University. He was suspended by the school and entered the NBA draft pool early after sitting out a season, but went undrafted in 2011. ESPN.com's Chad Ford had ranked him as the 70th-best prospect of the class. Awere, meanwhile, is a 6'11" center from Nigeria. The 27-year-old had been playing for Stade Nabeulien in Tunisia.

The Kings head into camp with 18 players on their roster, including 14 on guaranteed deals, so it's unlikely that either Reed or Awere makes the cut. At least one of Mitchell and N'Diaye appears to be a decent bet to earn a roster spot in Sacramento, however.

Kings To Sign Tony Mitchell

When the Kings opening training camp in a week and a half, Tony Mitchell will be with the team, according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee (via Twitter). It appears the Kings will sign Mitchell to, at the very least, a minimum-salary, non-guaranteed deal.

It was just two days ago that we heard Mitchell was drawing interest from the Kings, who hoped to bring him to camp. The former University of Alabama forward played for Sacramento's summer league squad in July, perhaps giving the Kings the upper hand on signing him for camp. Mitchell averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.0 RPG in his final year at Alabama, though his stint with the Crimson Tide wasn't without turmoil. The 23-year-old was suspended and eventually released by the program for an "accumulation" of incidents.

Mitchell will be the Kings' 15th player under contract, though the team hopes to add a few more players to its training-camp roster. With 14 guaranteed contracts on their books, the Kings will likely expect Mitchell and the other camp invitees to compete for the club's final roster spot.

Kings Targeting Tony Mitchell

The Kings, looking to fill out their preseason roster, would like to bring small forward Tony Mitchell to training camp, according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee (Sulia link). Mitchell reportedly drew interest from the Warriors and Knicks before going undrafted this past June. He'd likely be in line for a minimum-salary deal with little or no guaranteed money.

The 6'6", 23-year-old Mitchell, from the University of Alabama, is not to be confused with the 20-year-old, 6'7" player by the same name who'll be a sophomore at North Texas this year after flirting with early entry into the draft. The Mitchell from Alabama played for the Kings in summer league, averaging 11.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 22.8 minutes over five games, and the overall impression was a positive one, according to Jones.

The Kings currently have 14 players on the roster, all of whom have fully guaranteed deals, but GM Geoff Petrie wants to carry 18 players into camp. Presumably, that means the four signees will be fighting for one last roster spot, since teams can only have 15 players in the regular season.
