Thunder Waive Davis, Sign Grantham To Two-Way Deal

DECEMBER 28: The Thunder have officially signed Grantham to a two-way contract, the club confirmed today in a press release.

DECEMBER 27: The Thunder are turning over one of their two-way contract slots, announcing today in a press release that they’ve waived center Tyler Davis. According to Brett Dawson of The Athletic (via Twitter), Oklahoma City will replace Davis by signing Donte Grantham to a two-way contract.

Davis, who went undrafted in June after forgoing his final year of college eligibility to declare as an early entrant, signed a two-way contract with the Thunder in August. The 21-year-old big man appeared very briefly in just a single game for OKC, but racked up double-doubles for the club’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue. In 15 NBAGL games, Davis averaged 17.2 PPG and 11.5 RPG in 26.7 minutes per contest.

As for Grantham, this will technically be the second stint with the Thunder for the former Clemson forward. Grantham, who tore his ACL during his senior season, signed a camp deal with Oklahoma City during the offseason, but was cut before the regular season began and joined the Blue. He has posted 10.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 2.8 APG with a .400 3PT% in nine G League games so far, as he gets back to full health.

There will likely be plenty of turnover in the two-way ranks in the coming weeks, since January 15 represents the deadline for clubs to sign players to two-way deals in 2018/19.

Thunder Sign Tyler Davis To Two-Way Deal

6:06pm: The signing is official, the team tweets.

8:55am: The Thunder are poised to fill their second two-way contract slot, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, who reports (via Twitter) that former Texas A&M big man Tyler Davis will sign a two-way deal with Oklahoma City.

Davis, who came in at No. 85 on Jonathan Givony’s big board of 2018 prospects at ESPN.com, went undrafted in June after forgoing his final year of college eligibility to declare as an early entrant. In his junior season at Texas A&M, the 6’10” center averaged 14.9 PPG, 8.9 RPG, and 1.3 BPG to go along with a .585 FG%.

The Thunder had previously signed Deonte Burton to fill one of their two-way contract slots, and will now use the other on Davis. Assuming Burton and Davis enter the season as OKC’s two-way players, it clouds the path to the NBA for 2018 second-rounder Kevin Hervey. I noted yesterday that Hervey would be a candidate for that second two-way slot, so we’ll see what the Thunder have in mind for him now.

Assuming Burton and Davis both remain under contract to start the 2018/19 campaign, the Thunder’s regular-season roster looks pretty much set. The team already has 15 players on standard NBA contracts who have guaranteed salaries for ’18/19.

Draft Workouts: Simons, Allen, Grizzlies, Knicks

IMG Academy guard Anfernee Simons, projected as a possible first-round pick, has a busy workout schedule leading up to the 2018 NBA draft. Having already auditioned for the Lakers, Trail Blazers, Suns, and Bulls, Simons will reportedly work out for the Magic as well, as we heard on Monday. During Simons’ Tuesday workout with the Lakers, he added several more teams to that list, confirming that he’ll also get a look from the Jazz, Knicks, Sixers, and Bucks, as Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com relays.

That workout with the Jazz will happen on Thursday, league sources tell Tony Jones of The Salt Lake Tribune (Twitter link).

While Simons has a wide range of potential landing spots, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony has the youngster coming off the board at No. 38 to the Sixers in his latest mock draft.

Draft Workouts: Walker, Clippers, A.J. Davis, Hawks

Miami guard Lonnie Walker IV, considered a potential lottery pick, had his first pre-draft workout on Sunday when he met with the Hornets, tweets Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer. According to Bonnell, Walker indicated that he’ll audition for about six more teams, all of whom are picking in the 10-to-20 range in this month’s draft.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN.com has Walker going to the Clippers at No. 13 in his most recent mock draft, noting that the former Hurricane is a candidate to increase his stock during the pre-draft process due to his ” youth, strong frame, wingspan, and ability to shoot with his feet set or off the dribble.”

Draft Notes: DiVincenzo, Spellman, Walker, Bearden

Coach Jay Wright will recommend to Donte DiVincenzo and Omari Spellman that they return to Villanova if it doesn’t look like they’ll be drafted in the first round, according to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv. DiVincenzo goes to the Mavericks at No. 33 in the latest mock draft compiled by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, while Spellman isn’t projected to be taken. Players have until May 30 to make their decisions.

“Omari and Donte are out there to try to prove themselves as first-round picks,” Wright said of his players’ trips to the NBA Draft Combine. “For them, I hope they are. And I think this process has been good for them. I think they will get some good information.”

DiVincenzo met with the Lakers, Magic, Timberwolves, Trail Blazers, Cavaliers, Spurs, Hawks and Grizzlies at the combine and said he received a lot of “positive feedback.” Spellman has upcoming workouts with the Lakers [May 23], Clippers [May 24], Spurs [26] and Jazz [28] that will likely influence his decision, Zagoria adds.

There’s more draft news as the deadline for decisions draws closer:

  • The Sixers may consider Miami guard Lonnie Walker at No. 10, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Walker met with Philadelphia officials Friday and was impressed by the experience. “It went well,” he said. “See a little bit of Elton Brand and all those guys, I felt like a little kid, seeing guys I watched on TV.” Givony has Walker projected at No. 13 to the Clippers.
  • Lamonte Bearden of Western Kentucky will sign with an agent and stay in the draft, tweets ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. The guard averaged 11.8 points and 3.4 assists as a redshirt junior.
  • Kent State’s Jaylin Walker tweeted that he will return to school for his senior season. He averaged 16.6 points per game for the Golden Flashes this season.
  • The Nuggets have pre-draft workouts scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, the team announced in an e-mail. Scheduled to appear at Monday’s session are Tyler Davis of Texas A&M, Cody Martin of Nevada, William McDowell-White of Brose Bamberg, Isaiah Reese of Canisius, Admiral Schofield of Tennessee and Reid Travis of Stanford. Tuesday’s schedule features Tyler Cook of Iowa, Jon Elmore of Marshall, Ethan Happ of Wisconsin, Mustapha Heron of Auburn, Charles Matthews of Michigan and Shamorie Ponds of St. John’s.

Southeast Notes: Morris, Hawks, Hornets, Adebayo

Markieff Morris will be entering the final year of his contract with the Wizards this fall, raising questions about his long-term future in D.C. While Morris’ outlook could change between now and his 2019 free agency, his current preference would be to not only stick with the Wizards beyond his current deal, but also to remain in Washington for several years, as Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington details.

“I would definitely want to finish my career here,” Morris said of the Wizards. “I love playing here. I love being in the city that I was basically raised in and playing for this organization.”

After a first-round exit in the postseason this spring, the Wizards will be looking for ways to improve their roster this season, so Morris isn’t necessarily a lock to return. However, his $8.6MM salary makes him a better value than the team’s two centers, Marcin Gortat ($13.57MM) and Ian Mahinmi ($15.94MM).

Draft Updates: Ward, T. Davis, Sanders, Dickerson, Shamet

A number of NBA hopefuls have declared for the draft today and will test the waters as June approaches.

  • Sophomore Michigan State big man Nick Ward will gauge interest but not hire an agent, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweets. Ward isn’t currently projected to be selected in the June draft but would retain NCAA eligibility should be decide to withdraw.
  • Texas A&M center Tyler Davis will declare for the draft without hiring an agent, Jonathan Givony of ESPN says (via Twitter). The junior isn’t projected to be taken in early mock drafts.
  • Sophomore guard Landry Shamet will forgo his final two years at Wichita State in order to declare for the NBA draft, the guard announced on Instagram. According to Taylor Eldridge of The Wichita Eagle, Shamet does intend to sign an agent.
  • Rutgers point guard Corey Sanders will enter the NBA draft once again, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweets. While the junior intends to sign an agent, James Kratch of NJ.com writes that the guard may not be eligible to return to college even if he decides against hiring representation. NBA rules only allow players to test the waters twice and Sanders did so after both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
  • Washington forward Noah Dickerson will declare for the NBA draft, according to his Instagram page. He doesn’t intend to hire an agent, Ryan Clark of The Tacoma News Tribune adds.
