Southwest Notes: D’Antoni, Ferrell, Beverley

The Rockets have won just six of their last 14 games entering Tuesday’s contest, but coach Mike D’Antoni doesn’t believe the team should make a trade to get itself back on track, as Mark Berman of FOX 26 passes along via Twitter. “I like what I got,” D’Antoni said. “I’m sure [Daryl Morey] is going to do his job. You’re always trying to better the team. I’m real happy with what we have.”

Yogi Ferrell nearly signed in Turkey to play for Darussafaka, the team coached by David Blatt, before the Mavs swooped in to sign him to a 10-day deal, Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated writes. The point guard has been impressive for Dallas and the team officially signed him to a two-year deal earlier today.
Ferrell style of play is a perfect fit for Mavs coach Rick Carlisle‘s system, Fischer writes in the same piece. “You have to attack the rim, you have to know how to score, you have to be a threat on offense, so that it can create not only for yourself and for your teammates as well,” Ferrell said.
Patrick Beverley was not pleased when Dwight Howard entered the Rockets‘ locker room prior to a game against his former team, David Aldrige of NBA.com relays. “Get Dwight Howard out of our locker room,” Beverley said forcefully, as several witnesses told Aldridge. “I’m serious.” Howard and Beverley were teammates in Houston for three seasons.

Mavericks Sign Yogi Ferrell To Two-Year Deal

FEBRUARY 7, 11:46am: The Mavs have officially signed Ferrell to a new two-year deal, the team announced today in a press release.

FEBRUARY 4, 9:28am: Bobby Marks of The Vertical sheds further light on Ferrell’s two-year deal, noting Ferrell would earn the prorated minimum of $208K this season, followed by $1.3MM in 2017/18. The Mavericks have already used their room exception and are now over the cap, limiting the team to minimum salary deals.

9:12am: Yogi Ferrell and the Mavericks will bypass a second 10-day contract, instead opting for a two-year deal, Shams Charania of The Vertical reports. Ferrell’s deal comes on the heels of a breakout 32-point performance against Portland on Friday. The deal is expected to be finalized Tuesday, when Ferrell’s 10-day contract expires.

Ferrell, who went undrafted in 2016, received his first NBA experience in Brooklyn this season, scoring 54 points over 10 games. Jeremy Lin was due to return from injury (or so the Nets thought), however, making Ferrell expendable — he was waived by the Nets in early December.

After scoring 18.7 PPG in the D-League, Ferrell signed a 10-day contract with Dallas and has run with the opportunity. Averaging 37.8 MPG through four games with the Mavs, it now appears Ferrell will be a mainstay in Rick Carlisle‘s rotation. The 23-year-old had the best game of his young career on Friday, racking up 32 points and nine three-pointers in a win over the Blazers.

The Mavs’ roster will feature 15 players on guaranteed contracts once Ferrell’s new deal is finalized.

Mavs Notes: Ferrell, Sanders, Bogut

After signing a 10-day contract with Dallas on January 27th, Yogi Ferrell has hit the ground running. The former Hoosier has averaged 37.8 MPG in four appearances and turned in a masterpiece last night, torching Portland for 32 points on nine 3-pointers in a 108-104 victory. Ferrell was cut loose by the Nets after playing in 10 games this season, but now looks to have found carved a role through the rest of 2016/17 in Dallas.

Ferrell deserves to be the first player ever to win NBA player of the week honors while on a 10-day contract, Eddie Sefko of Dallas News writes. Ferrell’s nine 3-pointers is the highest total from a Mavericks rookie since Roddy Beaubois scored 40 points against the Warriors in 2010/11.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban indicated he will sign Ferrell for the rest of the season, according to Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. GM Donnie Nelson praised Ferrell’s performance following Friday’s showing. “That’s exactly how we scripted it, step in and start against two of the top three teams in the league,” Nelson told Price. “It’s just really kind of a special moment in time and he put himself in a great position. It’s really very unique and he obviously was kind of the straw that stirred the drink for those two games against pretty formidable opponents. So let’s just hope the trend continues.”
The Mavericks are among five teams interested in free agent Larry Sanders, according to Gery Woelfel of Woelfel’s Press Box. Sanders’ agent, Joel Bell, indicated a deal with one of the teams could come together soon. “By the end of next week, we should have a reasonably good handle on where this is going,’’ Bell said.
Matt Mosley of Dallas News was hesitant to list Deron Williams or Andrew Bogut as a viable trade chip, noting each player’s extensive injury history. Bogut, who has been recently sidelined with a hamstring injury, hasn’t carved out a role in Rick Carlisle‘s rotation, averaging a career-worst three points through 25 games in Dallas. Tim MacMahon of ESPN noted the possibility of Bogut’s contract being bought out after the trade deadline.

Mavericks Notes: Ferrell, Bogut, Acy

The Mavericks couldn’t be happier with the first half of Yogi Ferrell‘s 10-day contract, writes Dwain Price of The Star-Telegram. Signed out of the D-League after an injury to Pierre Jackson, Ferrell was immediately inserted into the starting lineup in tough matchups against the Spurs and Cavaliers. He scored nine points against San Antonio, then played Kyrie Irving to a standoff as Dallas won both games. “He’s on pace to have one of the greatest 10 days of all time,” said teammate Harrison Barnes. “He’s just playing with so much heart. And offensively and defensively, he’s had some tough match-ups. But he’s brought it every single night and the guy is giving us a chance.”

Ferrell is almost certain to remain with the team after his 10-day deal expires, according to Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News. Dallas has the option of giving him a second 10-day contract, then must either waive him or sign him for the rest of the season. With the rash of injuries to Mavericks point guards this season, Sefko believes Ferrell will stay around, at least for insurance purposes.
The Mavericks should be able to find a serviceable center for next season if Andrew Bogut is either traded or leaves as a free agent, Sefko states in a separate story. Over the past few seasons, they have used Tyson Chandler, Samuel Dalembert, Chris Kaman and Elton Brand, and Sefko is confident that someone like that will be available this summer, particularly as teams move to smaller lineups.
Quincy Acy‘s new two-year deal with the Nets will save the Mavericks some money, tweets Bobby Marks of The Vertical. Dallas signed Acy in July, but waived him in November with $1,050,961 in guaranteed salary. The contract he signed Monday with Brooklyn will bring that amount down to $593K.

Southwest Notes: Wright, Randolph, Ferrell

The Grizzlies are expecting injured power forward Brandan Wright back on Monday, tweets ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. Wright has been sidelined recovering from an ankle issue that ultimately required surgery. He hasn’t played at all in 2016/17.

The 29-year-old hasn’t done much since signing a three-year contract with Memphis during the summer of 2015, playing in only 12 games for the Grizzlies during the 2015/16 campaign on account of a knee injury.

After emerging as an intriguing reserve with the Mavericks between 2011 and 2014, Wright bounced around with the Suns and Celtics in 2014/15. With the Grizzlies, however, Wright could establish himself as a reliable source of frontcourt help heading into the final stretch.

Though the plan was to reduce his workload, the Grizzlies have turned to veteran big man Zach Randolph more and more often of late. Randolph is averaging 27.9 minutes per game in January, writes MacMahon in an article for ESPN, compared to his season average of 24.2. The forward has filled a sixth-man role for the club but has been as efficient with his minutes as ever.
Before he signed on to lead the Rockets to new heights in 2016/17, Mike D’Antoni worked alongside Brett Brown with the Sixers. Brian Seltzer of the Sixers’ official site spoke with the Rockets bench boss about his time in Philadelphia.
Less than 24 hours after signing his 10-day contract with the Mavs, point guard Yogi Ferrell has moved into the team’s starting lineup, tweets team play-by-play man Mark Followill.

Mavs Waive Pierre Jackson, Sign Yogi Ferrell

January 28, 10:35 am: The Mavs have officially signed Ferrell, tweets Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com.

January 27, 9:00 pm: The Mavericks have waived Jackson, opening the door for the addition of Ferrell, head coach Rick Carlisle confirmed today (link via The Dallas Morning News).

2:40 pm: Dallas will sign Ferrell to a 10-day deal, a source tells Shams Charania of The Vertical (Twitter link).

2:30 pm: The Mavericks will bring in Yogi Ferrell for an audition with an eye on signing him to a 10-day deal, Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com reports (Twitter link). The team currently doesn’t have an open roster spot, so a corresponding move would have to take place.

Dallas re-signed Pierre Jackson to a second 10-day contract on Wednesday, but the point guard injured his hamstring in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder. The team could waive him before his 10-day contract is up, though the team would still owe Jackson the full amount of the contract, or it could simply let the deal expire next week in order to free up a roster spot. The Mavs will play in four more games before Jackson’s deal is scheduled to expire.

If Dallas wants to re-sign Jackson once that deal expires, it will have to be for the rest of the season. League rules prevent teams from giving more than two 10-day contracts to any player in a given season and with Jackson already receiving two such deals, Ferrell’s audition could be foreshadowing Jackson’s eventual departure.

The Mavs could take other paths to opening up a roster spot, such as waiving a player or trading a player without receiving one in return. The team is reportedly shopping Andrew Bogut, and Dana Gauruder of Hoops Rumors profiled the big man as a trade candidate earlier in the month.

Dallas is having trouble keeping its point guards on the court. Deron Williams missed the Thunder game with a sprained toe. J.J. Barea remains out with a calf injury and Jackson could miss time with his hamstring woes. If Jackson or Williams can’t play on Sunday versus the Spurs, the team may need to add some outside help sooner than later.

Ferrell played 10 games for Brooklyn earlier in the season, where he dished out a total of 17 assists while coughing up 14 turnovers before the team waived him. Since then, he’s been playing for the Nets’ D-League affiliate, the Long Island Nets.

Chasson Randle To Work Out For Sixers

10:45am: Randle’s workout will be held Monday and he will be part of a group, tweets Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Joining him will be point guards Briante Weber, Yogi Ferrell and Cat Barber.

8:52am: Point guard Chasson Randle, who nearly won a roster spot with the Knicks in the preseason, will work out for the Sixers today, reports Marc Berman of The New York Post.

The decision comes a day after Ron Baker solidified the third point guard spot in New York when his contract became guaranteed for the remainder of the season.

Randle appeared headed toward a roster spot in October, but was waived after suffering an orbital bone fracture. He joined the Westchester Knicks in the D-League as an affiliate player and has averaged 20.7 points through 19 games.

The Knicks told Randle he might be re-signed this month now that teams are permitted to begin issuing 10-day contracts, according to Berman, who speculates that Marshall Plumlee or Maurice Ndour would be waived if that happens.

But before the Knicks get a chance, Randle might wind up with the Sixers, who are short on point guards after Jerryd Bayless was lost for the season with torn ligaments in his left wrist. They have been relying on T.J. McConnell, who had 17 assists Friday, and Sergio Rodriguez to handle the position. Philadelphia has an open roster spot after waiving Hollis Thompson on Wednesday.

Randle’s options in New York appear limited as Baker keeps impressing Knicks officials. Coach Jeff Hornacek compared Baker to himself as a guard who’s not flashy but knows how to get the ball to the right player.

“At the beginning of the year, I had a meeting with Jeff and he had mentioned something about January,’’ Baker said. “If I stayed on the right path as I did in preseason, I’ll be fine. I wasn’t concerned after that meeting, but I’m trying to keep improving obviously.’’

Ferrell Clears Waivers, Returns To D-League

Rookie point guard Yogi Ferrell, who was released by the Nets on Thursday, has cleared waivers and rejoined the team’s D-League affiliate in Long Island, tweets Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders.

The Nets also waived Ferrell during the preseason, but re-signed him November 9th after a rash of injuries at point guard. He appeared in 10 games during his month in Brooklyn, all as a reserve, and averaged 5.4 points and 1.7 assists in 15.1 minutes per night. He played two games for Long Island earlier this season.

Ferrell’s contract with the Nets was a two-year deal at minimum salary with just $100K guaranteed before January 10th. The second season was non-guaranteed.

Nets Waive Yogi Ferrell

The Nets have waived Yogi Ferrell, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post (Twitter links). The cap hit for the move is slightly over $102K, as Bobby Marks of The Vertical notes on Twitter.

The team’s roster currently sits at 14, so a corresponding move could be forthcoming, but GM Sean Marks wouldn’t commit to a particular position when asked about who will fill the open roster spot. “I’d hate to limit us to just a position. I’ve never put something like that on it. We’ll look at every position to be honest,” Marks said. Brooklyn is without a healthy veteran option at the point guard position, as Jeremy Lin remains out with a hamstring injury.

Ferrell played sparingly for the Nets, only appearing in 10 games. He averaged 5.4 points and 1.7 assists in 15.1 minutes per contest. If Ferrell goes unclaimed and decides to join the D-League, he’ll play for the Long Island Nets, Chris Reichert of The Step Back tweets.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 12/5/16

Here are Monday’s D-League assignments and recalls from across the NBA:

10:54pm:

The Nets have recalled guard Yogi Ferrell and forward Chris McCullough from their Long Island affiliate, the team announced in a press release. McCullough led the D-League team with 24 points and eight rebounds in today’s win over Sioux Falls. Ferrell is averaging 5.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in nine games with Brooklyn.

3:33pm:

Bulls forward Doug McDermott has missed the team’s last nine games due to a concussion, but he may be nearing a return. The club announced today in a press release that McDermott has been assigned to the Windy City Bulls, presumably to practice with the D-League squad before he rejoins the NBA team.
The Nets sent guard Yogi Ferrell back to the Long Island Nets for the team’s afternoon contest against Sioux Falls today, according to the club (Twitter link). Long Island lost the game, and Ferrell barely showed up on the score sheet, scoring four points on nine shots in 12 minutes of action.
The Lakers have recalled 2016 second-rounder Ivica Zubac from the D-League, the team announced today (Twitter link). Zubac hasn’t seen much action with the NBA club so far in his rookie year, but has played well for the L.A. D-Fenders, averaging 17.3 PPG and 8.5 RPG in six contests.
Jordan Mickey has returned to the Celtics, having been recalled from the Maine Red Claws, according to the team (via Twitter). Mickey was fairly quiet on Sunday, but had a huge game for Maine on Saturday, putting up 22 points, 15 boards, four assists, four steals, and four blocks.
