Knicks Sign Obadiah Noel To Exhibit 10 Deal

5:32pm: New York has officially announced the signing of Noel to an Exhibit 10 deal (Twitter link).

1:12pm: The Knicks intend to sign free agent guard Obadiah Noel to an Exhibit 10 contract, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).

It will be the first NBA contract for Noel, who went undrafted in 2021 after four college seasons at UMass-Lowell. The 24-year-old has spent his first two professional seasons playing in the G League.

During the 2021/22 season, Noel played for the Raptors 905, Toronto’s NBAGL affiliate. He held modest averages of 6.2 points on .393/.232/.783 shooting in 22 regular season games (17.1 minutes).

The 6’4″ guard began the ’22/23 G League season with the Raptors 905 during the fall Showcase Cup, but his minutes were further reduced, and he caught on with the Westchester Knicks, New York’s affiliate. He had a solid showing during the regular season, averaging 10.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals on .487/.382/.689 shooting in 29 games (26.8 minutes).

With a crowded backcourt and all three two-way slots filled, the most likely outcome is that Noel will be waived by the Knicks before the season starts. In that scenario, he would be eligible for a bonus worth up to $75K if he spends at least 60 days with Westchester in ’23/24.

Hornets Waive Xavier Sneed

The Hornets have waived forward Xavier Sneed, who was on a two-way contract, per a team press release.

Sneed, 25, spent most of the 2022/23 season with the Greensboro Swarm, Charlotte’s NBAGL affiliate, appearing in a total of 44 games with the club across the Showcase Cup and regular season. In 32 regular season appearances (31.2 MPG), Sneed averaged 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per night with a .393/.318/.738 shooting line.

He received a 10-day contract from Charlotte at the end of last season and then signed a two-way deal just before the season ended. He appeared in four games with the Hornets, averaging 4.3 points in 12.0 minutes.

Sneed, who also had brief NBA stints with the Grizzlies and Jazz, has spent the bulk of his three-year professional career playing in the G League, primarily with the Swarm. The former Kansas State product went undrafted in 2020.

As our roster count shows, the Hornets currently have 14 players on standard contracts (12 guaranteed), a pair on two-way deals after releasing Sneed, two unsigned restricted free agents (P.J. Washington and Theo Maledon), and one unsigned draft pick (James Nnaji, who was selected 31st overall).

Nets Sign Trendon Watford

3:25pm: Watford’s contract is non-guaranteed, per NetsDaily (Twitter link).

2:27pm: The Nets have signed free agent forward/center Trendon Watford, the team announced (via Twitter).

According to Brian Lewis of The New York Post, Watford received a standard contract (Twitter link). It’s unclear if the deal is guaranteed.

Watford was surprisingly waived by the Trail Blazers at the end of June before his minimum-salary contract for 2023/24 became guaranteed. He went unclaimed and became an unrestricted free agent a couple days later.

The 22-year-old averaged 7.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists with a shooting line of .560/.391/.720 in 62 appearances (19.1 MPG) in 2022/23.

Watford, who played two seasons of college ball at LSU, went undrafted in 2021 and caught on with the Blazers, initially signing a two-way deal. His contract was converted to a standard deal in February 2022 during his solid rookie season.

After officially signing Watford, the Nets are now carrying 17 players on their roster — 15 on standard contracts and a pair on two-way deals.

Pistons Re-Sign Buddy Boeheim On Exhibit 10 Deal

AUGUST 3: Boeheim’s deal is official, per RealGM’s transaction log.

AUGUST 1: The Pistons have reached an agreement with swingman Buddy Boeheim, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin tweets. It’s an Exhibit 10 contract, James Edwards III of The Athletic tweets.

The son of longtime Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was on Detroit’s roster last season as a rookie on a two-way deal. The Pistons declined to give him a qualifying offer in June and renounced his rights in July, but the younger Boeheim played on their Summer League team last month.

He appeared in 10 games with the NBA club last season but only averaged 9.0 minutes in those outings. He spent most of his time with the G League Motor City Cruise, where he averaged 12.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 18 games (17 starts). He shot 37.4% on 3-point attempts at that level but made only four of 25 in his NBA appearances.

If Boeheim is waived by the Pistons, he can also earn a bonus of up to $75K by re-joining the Cruise and spending at least 60 days with that NBAGL club.

Rockets Sign Nate Hinton, Matthew Mayer To Camp Deals

3:06pm: Hinton and Mayer have officially signed with the Rockets, according to a press release from the team.

10:12am: A flurry of roster moves for the Rockets will continue with training camp deals for Summer League standouts Nate Hinton and Matthew Mayer, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle (subscription required).

In the process of filling out its 21-man offseason roster, Houston also recently signed Joshua Obiesie to a camp contract and agreed to a camp deal with Jeenathan Williams and a two-way pact with Jermaine Samuels.

Hinton, a 6’5″ wing who played his college ball at Houston, has spent most of his three professional seasons on two-way contracts or G League deals, appearing in 23 NBA games for the Mavericks and Pacers since 2020. The 24-year-old played for the Cleveland Charge – the Cavaliers’ NBAGL affiliate – during the 2022/23 season, averaging 12.0 PPG and 6.3 RPG on .466/.383/.789 shooting in 27 regular season games (33.9 MPG).

A 6’9″ forward, Mayer went undrafted in June out of Illinois and caught on with the Rockets’ Summer League team, putting up 12.5 PPG and 7.3 RPG with a .516/.435/.889 shooting line in four contests (25.2 MPG). Hinton also played well for the Rockets in Vegas, averaging 11.8 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 2.7 SPG on 50.0% shooting in six appearances (26.4 MPG).

As Feigen explains, Hinton, Mayer, and Williams are all expected to participate in training camp with the Rockets this fall, so they’re receiving contracts with Exhibit 9 language, which protects a team financially in the event of an injury.

A team can only sign a player to an Exhibit 9 contract once it has 14 players already on standard contracts, so Houston added Obiesie as its 14th man in order to begin finalizing the rest of its camp deals. Obiesie, whose deal doesn’t include Exhibit 9 protection, “will not be involved in the camp,” per Feigen, but the Rockets will control his G League rights after he’s waived.

I would expect that all of Houston’s camp invitees will also have Exhibit 10 language in their deals, which will entitle them to bonuses worth up to $75K if they eventually join the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and remain with the Rockets’ G League affiliate for at least 60 days.

Rockets Add Jeenathan Williams To Camp Roster

AUGUST 2: The Rockets have officially signed Williams, they announced today in a press release.

AUGUST 1: The Rockets have agreed to a contract with Jeenathan Williams, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype tweets. It’s a training camp deal, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic (Twitter link).

The Trail Blazers waived Williams last week before his $1,719,864 salary for the 2023/24 season became guaranteed.

Houston had plenty of room on its camp roster to add Williams. His addition will increase the total to 17 players.

Williams, a 6’5” swingman, could have a better shot than most players on training camp contracts to gain a spot on the 15-man roster. The Rockets also have a two-way opening.

Williams, who went undrafted out of Buffalo in 2022, spent most of his first professional season with the Salt Lake City Stars, the Jazz’s G League affiliate. In 32 regular season appearances for Salt Lake City, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 29.8 minutes per game.

That G League performance earned Williams a late-season call-up with the Blazers, who signed him to a multiyear deal on April 1. He got extended playing time for the lottery-bound club down the stretch, averaging 10.6 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 2.0 APG in five contests (25.4 MPG), including four starts.

Rockets Sign Jermaine Samuels To Two-Way Contract

1:30pm: Samuels’ two-way contract is official, according to NBA.com’s transaction log.

8:30am: The Rockets have reached a contract agreement with free agent forward Jermaine Samuels, according to Shams Charania and Kelly Iko of The Athletic (Twitter link), who report that Samuels is signing a two-way deal with the club.

Samuels, 24, went undrafted out of Villanova in 2022 and spent his first professional season with the Pacers’ G League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. In 32 regular season NBAGL games, he averaged an impressive 18.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, making 66.6% of his shots from the floor.

Samuels’ strong G League play didn’t earn him an NBA call-up as a rookie, but he was invited to play for the Rockets’ Summer League team in Las Vegas last month and performed well, averaging 11.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 3.3 APG in six appearances (27.3 MPG).

Reporting at the start of the Vegas Summer League indicated that Samuels had impressed team officials in practices and had emerged as a candidate for a two-way deal for the Rockets.

Trevor Hudgins and Darius Days are currently on two-way contracts for Houston, so Samuels will fill the team’s third and final two-way slot. Since two-way deals only feature small partial guarantees and don’t count against the cap at all, the Rockets could still make changes before opening night, but for now the team will have no available two-way spots after officially signing Samuels.

Celtics Waive Justin Champagnie

The Celtics have waived swingman Justin Champagnie, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.

Champagnie, 22, appeared in two regular season and four postseason games for Boston last season. The front office had a deadline today regarding Champagnie’s contract. He had a $50K guarantee if he remained on the roster through Tuesday.

Champagnie signed a two-year, minimum-salary contract in April but it was non-guaranteed for next season. By shedding Champagnie, the Celtics now have two openings on the 15-man roster.

He could benefit in the long run, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet notes (Twitter link). This frees him up to seek a two-way or camp deal where he could conceivably end up with more guaranteed money — the maximum Exhibit 10 bonus and the partial guarantee on a two-way contract are each worth $75K.

After going undrafted out of Pittsburgh in 2021, the 6’6″ swingman inked a two-way deal with the Raptors for the 2021/22 season. The team brought him back aboard for 2022/23, but after he had appeared in just three games for Toronto, he was cut in December.

Raptors Sign Mouhamadou Gueye To Exhibit 10 Contract

The Raptors have signed forward Mouhamadou Gueye, the team announced in a press release. According to Sportsnet’s Blake Murphy, Gueye’s deal with Toronto is an Exhibit 10 contract (Twitter link).

Gueye, a 6’10” forward who played college ball at Pitt, went undrafted in 2022 before joining the Mavericks on a training camp contract last season. Gueye was waived before the regular season began and played for Dallas’ G League affiliate, the Texas Legends. Gueye averaged 8.6 points and 5.1 rebounds in 29 Showcase Cup and regular season games with the Legends as a rookie.

The Pitt product went on to play for the Raptors in Summer League this offseason. Toronto’s G League affiliate, Raptors 905, traded for Gueye in exchange for a 2024 G League first round pick last week, which is often a precursor to an Exhibit 10 deal for that player.

With Gueye, alongside the finalized additions of Garrett Temple and Kevin Obanor, the Raptors now sit at the offseason maximum of 21 players for their training camp roster. Gueye and Obanor are on Exhibit 10 contracts, Toronto’s three two-way spots are filled, and 16 players are on standard contracts.

Of those 16 standard contracts, at least 14 are fully guaranteed. Jeff Dowtin is on a non-guaranteed contract with a partial guarantee if he makes the opening day roster. Temple’s details aren’t yet known.

Duane Washington Returns To Knicks On Camp Deal

AUGUST 1: Washington’s new deal with the Knicks is a training camp contract, tweets Fred Katz of The Athletic.

JULY 30: The Knicks have signed Duane Washington, the team announced in a press release.

The 23-year-old guard was waived last week after picking up his two-way qualifying offer. New York already has its three two-way slots filled by Jaylen Martin, Nathan Knight and Dylan Windler.

Details of Washington’s contract weren’t released, so it’s not clear if it’s a standard deal or an Exhibit 10 contract that will give him a chance to earn a roster spot in training camp. New York currently has just 11 players signed to guaranteed contracts, with four additional players on non-guaranteed deals.

Washington played 31 games for the Suns last season, averaging 7.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per night before being waived in early February. The Knicks signed him to a two-way contract on February 28, and he appeared in five G League games but didn’t suit up for the NBA team.
