Spurs Waive Isaiah Roby, Claim Sandro Mamukelashvili Off Waivers

4:35pm: San Antonio has officially waived Roby and claimed Mamukelashvili, the team announced. The Spurs immediately converted Mamukelashvili to a standard contract, and their 17-man roster is full.

4:15pm: The Spurs plan to waive forward/center Isaiah Roby and will claim big man Sandro Mamukelashvili off the waiver wire, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

There is a corresponding move that is missing from Charania’s report, however, as Roby is on San Antonio’s 15-man roster, while Mamukelashvili was on a two-way contract with Milwaukee.

The Spurs’ two-way are currently occupied by forwards Dominick Barlow and Julian Champagnie, so they will either need to promote or waive one of those players, or perhaps immediately promote Mamukelashvili — we’re not sure yet if that’s permitted.

Ironically, the Spurs claimed Roby off waivers last summer, and now will reportedly release him to add another player off waivers. His name did pop up in one trade rumor prior to the deadline, which signaled that San Antonio may not have viewed him as a long-term keeper. He is currently sidelined with an ankle injury that has kept him out of action since February 13.

Roby, 25, spent his first three seasons with the Thunder, averaging a combined 9.1 PPG and 5.1 RPG on .495/.365/.708 shooting in 109 games (62 starts, 21.9 MPG) with Oklahoma City. As previously mentioned, San Antonio claimed him off the waiver wire last offseason, but his role has been pretty limited in 2022/23, averaging 4.1 PPG and 2.5 RPG on .432/.300/.488 shooting in 42 games (11.3 MPG).

Assuming he clears waivers, the Spurs will be on the hook for Roby’s full $1,930,681 salary and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Mamukelashvili, 23, was waived a couple days ago by the Bucks. A report at the time suggested that another team might be interested in his services, and now he will reportedly land with San Antonio.

After spending four college seasons at Seton Hall, Mamukelashvili was selected 54th overall in the 2021 draft. He has spent the past two seasons on a two-way contract with the Bucks, but his playing time was very limited at the NBA level — he averaged 3.2 PPG and 2.1 RPG on .439/.345/.750 shooting in 65 games (9.6 MPG) from 2021-23.

The big man played much more for the Wisconsin Herd in ’22/23, Milwaukee’s G League affiliate. He averaged 19.5 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 3.8 APG and 1.3 SPG on .533/.200/.667 shooting in 11 Showcase Cup games (30.9 MPG), and 23.3 PPG, 13.0 RPG, 4.8 APG, 1.0 SPG and 1.0 BPG on .486/.471/.667 shooting in four regular season games (36.5 MPG).

Jared Butler Signs Two-Way Contract With Thunder

MARCH 3: Butler has officially signed a two-way contract with the Thunder, according to a press release from the team.

MARCH 2: The Thunder intend to sign guard Jared Butler to a two-way contract, his agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, tells ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).

Butler was a key member of the national champion Baylor Bears in 2021, averaging 16.7 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 4.8 APG and 2.0 SPG while shooting 41.6% from 3-point range as a junior. However, questions about his health hurt his draft stock and he slipped to No. 40 overall in the 2021 draft after having been considered a likely first-rounder.

The 22-year-old spent his rookie season with the Jazz, appearing sparingly in 42 games (8.6 MPG) while averaging 3.8 PPG and 1.5 APG on .404/.318/.688 shooting. Utah had a roster crunch during preseason this past fall and ultimately released Butler despite the fact that his $1.56MM salary for this season was guaranteed.

Butler has spent the 2022/23 season with the Grand Rapids Gold, Denver’s G League affiliate, averaging 19.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 5.2 APG and 1.2 SPG on .483/.458/.771 shooting in 18 games (30.1 MPG) during the fall Showcase Cup. He has averaged 17.1 PPG, 3.3 RPG and 5.8 APG on .438/.354/.840 shooting in 23 regular season games (30.2 MPG) with the Gold.

The Thunder had an open two-way slot, so they won’t need to cut anyone to sign Butler. Their 17-man roster will be full once the move is official.

Jamaree Bouyea Signs 10-Day Deal With Wizards

MARCH 3: Bouyea’s 10-day contract with the Wizards is now official, the team announced today in a press release. It’ll run through March 12, making Bouyea eligible for Washington’s next six games.

MARCH 2: The Wizards are set to sign free agent point guard Jamaree Bouyea, currently with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBAGL, to a 10-day deal, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

The 6’2″ rookie went undrafted in 2022 following a five-year NCAA career with San Francisco. This will mark his second 10-day contract of the 2022/23 season so far, after he initially agreed to a 10-day deal with the Heat last month.

In four appearances with Miami, Bouyea received limited run, logging 16.3 minutes per night. He averaged 3.8 points per game on .462/.400/500 shooting splits to go along with 1.3 RPG, 1.0 APG and 1.0 SPG. The Heat did not bring him aboard for a second 10-day agreement.

Across 18 regular season games with the Skyforce, Bouyea has averaged 18.9 PPG on .524/.313/.705 shooting splits. He’s also chipping in 6.0 APG, 5.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG and 0.9 BPG.

Bouyea will be the 15th player on Washington’s current standard roster, as currently comprised. The 30-32 Wizards occupy the No. 10 seed in the East, and have been making moves around the fringes of their roster in recent days. To wit, 7’1″ center Jay Huff was added on a two-way deal earlier today.

Cavaliers Sign Sam Merrill To 10-Day Deal

MARCH 3: Merrill’s 10-day contract is now official, the Cavs have confirmed. The deal will cover Cleveland’s next five games, running through the club’s March 12 contest in Charlotte.

MARCH 1: The Cavaliers intend to sign guard Sam Merrill to a 10-day contract, sources tell Shams Charania and Kelsey Russo of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Merrill, 26, was the 60th and final pick of the 2020 draft after four years at Utah State. He spent his rookie season with Milwaukee, winning a championship with the Bucks in a very minor role.

He was traded to the Grizzlies in the 2021 offseason, but unfortunately suffered a major ankle sprain in November 2021 which later required surgery. Memphis waived him last January, and he didn’t join another NBA team until signing a partially guaranteed deal with the Kings this past summer.

He spent training camp with Sacramento, but ultimately didn’t make the roster. Merrill’s $150K partial guarantee made him ineligible to join the Kings’ G League affiliate, and the Cleveland Charge, the Cavs’ affiliate, selected him first overall in October’s G League draft.

The sharpshooter hasn’t played much at the NBA level, logging just 8.1 minutes per game in 36 career games with Milwaukee and Memphis. However, he has put up strong numbers for the Charge in ’22/23, averaging 17.5 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 2.6 APG and 1.3 SPG on an excellent .469/.437/.852 shooting line in 18 regular season games (33.8 MPG).

The Cavs have an opening on their standard roster, so a corresponding move will not be required in order to sign Merrill.

Pistons Sign Eugene Omoruyi To 10-Day Contract

The Pistons have filled the open spot on their 15-man roster, announcing in a press release that they’ve signed forward Eugene Omoruyi to a 10-day contract.

Omoruyi, 26, has spent most of this season with the Thunder, appearing in 23 games for the team and averaging 4.9 points and 2.3 rebounds on .468/.258/.607 shooting in 11.8 minutes per night.

The former Oregon standout was on a two-way contract until being promoted to Oklahoma City’s standard roster after last month’s trade deadline. However, he was cut this past Sunday in order to make room for Lindy Waters on OKC’s 15-man squad.

In addition to seeing some action at the NBA level, Omoruyi also played for the Oklahoma City Blue in the G League this season. He averaged 17.5 PPG and 5.7 RPG in 13 NBAGL contests (26.8 MPG), making 45.1% of his shots from the floor but just 18.1% of his three-pointers.

The Pistons opened up a spot on their 15-man roster on Monday, when they bought out Nerlens Noel. Omoruyi will occupy that spot for at least the next 10 days — his deal will run through March 12, covering Detroit’s next five games.

A second-year player, Omoruyi will earn $94,136 on his 10-day contract, as our chart shows.

Warriors Sign Lester Quinones To 10-Day Contract

MARCH 2: Quinones’ 10-day deal is now official, the Warriors announced (via Twitter).

MARCH 1: The Warriors intend to promote guard Lester Quinones from their G League affiliate in Santa Cruz to their NBA roster, having agreed to sign him to a 10-day contract, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

The move is being made due to a rule buried deep in the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, as Anthony Slater of The Athletic explains. A team that has an open spot on its 15-man roster can only have its two-way players active for a total of 90 combined games, rather than 100 (50 each).

Golden State’s two-way players have hit that 90-game limit — Anthony Lamb has been active for 47 games and Ty Jerome has been active for 43. By filling the 15th spot on their standard roster, the Warriors will ensure that they can continue to activate Lamb and Jerome for at least a few more games.

As Slater observes, a simpler solution may have been for the Warriors to promote one of those two-way players to a standard contract, but the club wants to maintain some roster flexibility before finalizing any decisions on Lamb or Jerome. There’s an expectation that at least one of them will likely be promoted before the end of the season, but it may come down to which player head coach Steve Kerr believes would be more needed in the playoff rotation.

After going undrafted out of Memphis last summer, Quinones signed a two-way contract with Golden State, but he was waived just before the regular season began in October and has instead spent his first professional season as an affiliate player for the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Quinones averaged 17.4 points on .498/.436/.745 shooting in 18 Showcase Cup games (29.6 MPG) and has put up 20.7 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 4.9 APG with a .448/.361/.808 shooting line in 21 NBAGL regular season appearances (32.5 MPG) for Santa Cruz.

Wizards Sign Jay Huff To Two-Way Contract

MARCH 2: The signing is official, the Wizards announced in a press release.

MARCH 1: G League center Jay Huff will fill one of the open slots on the Wizards‘ 17-man roster, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that the big man has agreed to sign a two-way contract with Washington.

Huff signed his first NBA contract – an Exhibit 10 deal – with Washington shortly after going undrafted out of Virginia in 2021. After being waived by the Wizards that fall, he inked a two-way deal with the Lakers. He was only on that contract for about three months before being cut again, but he has spent the majority of his first two professional seasons playing for L.A.’s G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.

In 18 Showcase Cup games this fall, Huff averaged 16.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks in 29.3 minutes per night — I highlighted him in November as a G League prospect making a bid for an NBA call-up. He has continued to produce for South Bay since then, posting 14.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG, and 3.6 BPG in 19 NBAGL regular season contests (26.2 MPG).

The Wizards have an open two-way slot after recently promoting Jordan Goodwin to their standard roster, so no corresponding move will be necessary to make room for Huff. Having waived Vernon Carey Jr. today, Washington still has one more roster spot available.

Because he’s signing so late in the season, Huff is eligible to be active for a prorated portion of the usual 50-game limit for two-way players. Assuming he signs today, he could be active for up to 12 Wizards games.

Clippers Waive Keaton Wallace, Sign Xavier Moon To Two-Way Deal

11:05pm: Moon’s two-way deal is official, per the Clippers (Twitter link).

8:32pm: The Clippers have officially waived two-way guard Keaton Wallace (Twitter link via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk) and are expected to replace him with point guard Xavier Moon, Moon’s agent, Stacey Leawood, tells Andrew Greif of The Los Angeles Times (Twitter link).

Wallace just inked his two-way deal last Tuesday. He went undrafted in 2021 and has spent his first two pro seasons playing with the Clippers’ G League affiliate, averaging 14.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.6 APG and 1.6 SPG on .488/.447/.714 shooting in 21 regular season games (32.1 MPG) with Ontario. He has yet to play an NBA game.

Moon has spent much of his professional career overseas. He signed three 10-day hardship deals with the Clippers last season and later a two-way deal, averaging 5.8 PPG and 2.4 APG on .490/.357/.600 shooting in 10 games (13.7 MPG).

The Clippers chose not to give him a two-way qualifying offer, but he signed an Exhibit 10 deal for training camp and was waived before ’22/23 began. The 28-year-old has excelled for the Ontario Clippers this season, averaging 21.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 5.4 APG, 1.6 SPG and 1.4 BPG on .522/.422/.829 shooting in 20 regular season games (31.5 MPG).

L.A. has a full 15-man roster and both two-way slots will be filled once Moon’s signing is official.

The Clippers have now signed both Wallace and Nate Darling to two-way contracts and waived them shortly thereafter. The team appears to be rewarding some of its G League standouts by essentially giving them a bonus on their NBAGL salaries in the form of a prorated two-way salary, which doesn’t count against the cap. It’s unclear whether the plan is the same for Moon or whether he’ll hang onto his two-way spot for the rest of the season.

Bucks Waive Sandro Mamukelashvili

10:49pm: Mamukelashvili has officially been waived, the Bucks announced in a press release.

4:06pm: The Bucks will waive big man Sandro Mamukelashvili, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link), Milwaukee worked with Mamukelashvili’s agents to try and help with his options in the future. We’ll have to wait and see whether the young forward/center has another opportunity lined up if he clears waivers.

The Bucks have one of league’s best frontcourts, so it’s understandable why the 23-year-old’s minutes were limited. Still, he put up strong numbers in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd this season, averaging 23.3 PPG, 13.0 RPG, 4.8 APG, 1.0 SPG and 1.0 BPG on .486/.471/.667 shooting in four regular season games (36.5 MPG).

Once Mamukelashvili is officially waived, the Bucks will have one two-way slot open. They also have a couple of standard roster spots available; Meyers Leonard is temporarily occupying one, but his 10-day deal expires in a couple days.

Wizards Waive Vernon Carey Jr.

The Wizards have officially waived big man Vernon Carey Jr., the team announced today in a press release.

Carey, who turned 22 on Saturday, has appeared in just 11 games this season for the Wizards and 14 overall since joining the team at the 2022 trade deadline in the Montrezl Harrell deal. The former Duke standout, who was drafted 32nd overall by the Hornets in 2020, has played in 37 total games for Charlotte and Washington, with career averages of 1.9 PPG and 1.4 RPG in 5.1 MPG.

Carey’s contract covered one additional season beyond this one, but the Wizards held a minimum-salary team option for 2023/24. By releasing him, Washington is essentially declining that option and will only be on the hook for the rest of this season’s $1.78MM salary, assuming Carey is not claimed on waivers.

The move will create an opening on the Wizards’ 15-man roster for another addition, and the club still has enough breathing room below the luxury tax line after signing Jordan Goodwin to fill that spot without becoming a taxpayer. Washington also still has an open two-way contract slot.

As for Carey, because he’s being waived on March 1, he’ll be playoff-eligible if he catches on with another NBA team. Given his lack of meaningful NBA experience though, it seems unlikely that he’ll be targeted by contenders.
