Week in Review

A number of teams elected to shut down key players this week, either to play it safe with injuries or “develop young players”. There were also a number of 10-day players who managed to convince their teams to commit for the remainder of the season. Hey, not every week can be exciting as the trade deadline! Injuries

• After missing a month with an injured knee, Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is expected to return soon.
• An MRI revealed that Jazz forward Derrick Favors has a bone bruise and will be out indefinitely.
• Sidelined with a heart arrythmia, Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge has been cleared to resume playing.
• Diagnosed with an elbow sprain and slight fracture, Dwyane Wade will miss the remainder of the season for the Bulls. He could return in the postseason.
• Citing his knee soreness, the Suns have elected to shut down Eric Bledsoe for the remainder of the season.
• An injured foot will sidelined Timberwolves forward Nemanja Bjelica for the remainder of the season.
• Free agent forward Omri Casspi has been cleared to play after breaking his thumb.

News

• The Lakers have shut down center Timofey Mozgov so that they can get a closer look at young players. He is not injured.
• The Lakers also shut down a healthy Luol Deng for the remainder of the season, too.
• Highly anticipated international guard Sergio Llull is expected to remain in Europe net season. His rights are held by the Rockets.
• Much anticipated 2016 draft pick Ante Zizic is expected to be on the Celtics roster for 2017/18.

Rumors

• Waived by the Pelicans due to injury, free agent forward Omri Casspi, now healthy, is looking to sign on with a contender.
• Finished in China, Celtics rookie Guerschon Yabusele will spend time and could ultimately play with Boston’s D-League affiliate.
• Pending free agent Jeff Teague likes New York but isn’t a fan of the triangle offense that the Knicks run.
• The Pelicans could explore replacing head coach Alvin Gentry and general manager Dell Demps.
• To some Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony appeared to be staging a “protest” against the triangle offense.
• The Knicks are unlikely to move away from head coach Jeff Hornacek despite the teams struggles.
• Former Pelicans coach Monty Williams is expected to be among the “elite candidates” on the coaching market this offseason.
• Last seen with the Knicks, former head coach Derek Fisher would like to return to coaching.

It was a relatively quiet week in the NBA, at least compared to the flurries leading up to and immediately after the trade deadline. • Cavaliers center Andrew Bogut fractured his tibia in the first minute of his Cavs career. He’s been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
• Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith is back in the lineup for the first time since fracturing his thumb in December.
• Trail Blazers center Festus Ezeli has undergone knee surgery and been ruled out for the remainder of the 2016/17 season.

• The Lakers formally announced the hiring of Rob Pelinka as general manager of the franchise. Pelinka has fully divested from his sports agency.
• Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer was suspended one game for making incidental contact with an official.
• Acclaimed draft prospect Markelle Fultz has announced that he’ll enter the NBA Draft this summer.

• The Cavaliers are in serious discussions with free agent big man Larry Sanders, though no deal has yet been announced.
• The Cavaliers are planning to waive Andrew Bogut in light of his season ending tibia fracture.
• Ahead of schedule in his recovery from a thumb injury, free agent forward Omri Casspi is said to be drawing interest from playoff teams.
• Kings forward Rudy Gay has apparently not yet decided whether or not he’ll turn down his player option for the 2017/18 season.
• Lakers veteran Luol Deng is seeing his role decrease in Los Angeles as the club makes room for its young core.

The passing of two major deadlines in the NBA this week yielded a flurry of transactions and, needless to say, the buy out period did not disappoint. Contenders like the Cavaliers and Wizards stocked up on recently released veterans like Deron Williams and Brandon Jennings. Meanwhile, others with grand aspirations like the Warriors and Raptors had fate intervene in the form of long-term injuries to key players like Kevin Durant and Kyle Lowry.

A wild week in the NBA has just drawn to a close. We started with the All-Star Break in New Orleans and finished with the dawn of buyout season. In between? A particularly active trade deadline day and an exciting few days leading up to it. We all know by now that the DeMarcus Cousins/Anthony Davis is underway in New Orleans but what comes next? • The Clippers are looking into a new arena in Inglewood.
• Injured Heat forward Chris Bosh will not attempt a comeback this season, he’s signed on as an analyst with TNT.
• NBA commissioner Adam Silver said that he would like to reconsider the league’s age limit.
• The Heat were unable to retain 10-day signee Marcus Georges-Hunt because, with Josh Richardson back in action, they were no longer eligible for the hardship exception.
• The Cavaliers had two traded player exceptions to use this month but they let them expire.

Rumors

• The Rockets are said to be targeting center Andrew Bogut if he is waived, as expected. The Warriors are eligible to sign him, too.
• The Lakers are considering buyout options with guard Jose Calderon.
• The Celtics and Bulls discussed the possibility of a Jimmy Butler trade.
• The Nuggets put together a “monster offer” for Paul George but were rebuffed by the Pacers. George ultimately stayed put.
• The Hawks made aggressive offers for Paul George and Jimmy Butler.

Tensions have started to boil around the league as club’s set out on the long haul that is the second-half of the NBA season. This week, among locker room drama in the Eastern Conference, several players were brought in on 10-day contracts. Here’s a Week In Review:

• The D-League will expand to Mississippi in 2017/18, that team being affiliated with and managed by the Grizzlies. Subsequently, the Timberwolves, who have been without any one-to-one affiliation, will affiliate with Memphis’ former affiliate in Iowa.
• The Jazz will remain in Utah for generations thanks to the current ownership’s decision to put the team in a legacy trust.
• A frustrated LeBron James publicly insisted that the Cavaliers acquire a point guard. (Although the team may be waiting for a reason). The forward has also butted heads with management over the team’s payroll.
• A mediocre 2016/17 season could influence Dwyane Wade to look somewhere other than with the Bulls in free agency this summer.
• Post-game comments from Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler have caused a stir in the Bulls locker room. The pair questioned the integrity of their teammates. Not long after, point guard Rajon Rondo fired back at the two via a now infamous Instagram post.
• After a two-year absence, Larry Sanders is ready to return to basketball. He worked out with the Celtics this week.
• With assault charges stemming from an altercation at a nightclub against him, Kings forward Matt Barnes has decided to turn himself in.

Injuries

• There was cause for concern when Joel Embiid went down with a bruised knee this week, but the Sixers took the cautious approach with their rookie big man. Embiid took three games off but was back in action on Friday night.
• Second-year Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell tweaked his right leg and will spend 1-2 weeks on the sidelines. Russell is said to have strained his calf and sprained his right MCL.
• A setback in Jeremy Lin‘s recovery from a hamstring injury could shelf the newly acquired Nets guard for 3-5 more week.
• Sidelined since mid-December, Clippers forward Blake Griffin returned to the court this week.
• Guard Jodie Meeks will undergo thumb surgery and is out of action for the Magic indefinitely.
• While punching a chair in frustration, Thunder big man Enes Kanter fractured his forearm. He’ll be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
• After successful Achilles surgery, Kings forward Rudy Gay is expected to be healthy in time for training camp next season.

Rumors

• Both the Bulls and Knicks are among teams said to be interested in Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio. One team that isn’t? The Pistons. Head coach Stan Van Gundy vehemently denied reports that Rubio would  be dealt for Reggie Jackson.
• The Cavaliers have supposedly rejected a deal that would involve them shipping Kevin Love to the Knicks in exchange for Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks are also said to have been in touch with the Clippers and Celtics.
• If the Clippers and Knicks were to work out a deal for Carmelo Anthony, as at least one executive expects, Austin Rivers could be involved. The two teams may need to find a third trading partner to make something work, however.
• The Celtics and Magic have apparently discussed a trade that would send Nikola Vucevic north.
• Two point guards said to be in play for the Cavaliers are Shelvin Mack and Jameer Nelson.

• The plot thickens in New York. This week Carmelo Anthony spoke about his no-trade clause and ultimately decided that a conversation between he and Phil Jackson was needed.
