John Mitchell of Philly.com reports that Sixers guard Lou Williams will opt out of the final year of his contract. Mitchell spoke with Williams' agent, Leon Rose, who confirmed that his client will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Williams, 25, was to make approximately $6.4MM during the 2012/13 season after signing a five-year, $25MM contract with Philadelphia in 2008. He is expected to be one of the top shooting guards on the market this summer.
Williams led the Sixers in scoring during the 2011/12 season, averaging 14.9 PPG as the team finished with the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference and beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs before falling in seven games to the Boston Celtics in the Conference Semifinals.
