WEDNESDAY, 8:45am: The Raptors turned away the Pistons' proposal for Gay and don't intend to move him for nothing, tweets Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun.
TUESDAY, 11:03pm: The Pistons have offered the Raptors the expiring contracts of Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva in a package for Rudy Gay, league sources told Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com.
Stuckey and Villanueva will both earn $8.5MM in 2013/14 and while Gay has two years and $37MM left on his deal. Detroit is hoping that GM Masai Ujiri is planning even more drastic change in Toronto days after agreeing to ship Andrea Bargnani to the Knicks.
Gay averaged 19.5 PPG while shooting 43% from the floor in his 33 games for the Raptors. Detroit was among the bidders for him when the Grizzlies made him available last season and they are making another play for him this summer.
Toss in 2 first round picks Detroit and it’s a deal!!
…or you could just offer the Raptors 2 second round picks for Rudy Gay. Milwaukee was dumb enough to take a similar deal maybe the Raptors might as well LOL
Ed Davis is a first round talent (not a top 5-10 pick talent, but still).
He is good defensively with potential to get even better. He hadn’t done much off the bench but once Toronto gave him some starts he was showing real progress and was having an impact.
He was averaging 14.2 PPG. 8.1 RPG, 1.0 BPG in the 15 games leading up to the trade, its not his fault Memphis have a strong front court that blocked him from showing what he can do.
JJ Reddick could have walked for absolutely no return to the Bucks. Them getting 2, second round picks is better than losing Reddick. Do you understand free agents that are unrestricted are free to sign anywhere?
It’s crazy how many people don’t realize Rudy Gay is a bad contract. Hollinger realized it and I’m sure Masai Ujiri realizes it too, but I have enough faith in Ujiri to think he will at least try to get a little more for Gay.
They’re hoping Gay helps sells tickets. Raptors haven’t had a player that can do what Gay can in a long time. Which is of course is – create a buzz around the city. He hit multiple game winning shots in T.O and fans loved it.
I definitely agree (both that he’s overpaid and that that trade offer is not good). He’s clearly better than Derozan (but not worthy of almost twice the salary), and I love having him on the team, and like “Sportsfan99” said, he’s good for selling tickets.
A package involving Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva sounds just awful.
