Latest On Lamar Odom

Agent Jeff Schwartz has disputed media reports that Lamar Odom is missing, telling ESPN.com's Marc Stein that playing in the NBA next season "is still very much part of Lamar's plans." However, a source tells ESPN that Odom is currently in a Los Angeles hotel where friends are "trying to get him help for an unspecified drug problem."

The details of Odom's situation remain unclear, as Schwartz didn't disclose any specifics, but it seems his NBA career may be on hold until he resolves some off-court issues. Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News hears from a source that the Clippers still have some interest in Odom, though a deal doesn't seem overly likely, since the club is also talking to Antawn Jamison. The Lakers touched base with Odom early in July, but no longer have interest in signing him, according to Medina.

A month ago, a report indicated that Odom only had interest in playing for a Los Angeles team, so if the Lakers are out of the mix, the Clippers may represent his last chance at an NBA contract for the coming season.

Kyler On Asik, Rockets, Suns, Gortat, Adelman

Continuing a series that got underway last week, Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld examines a few more teams that could explore trade options either before or during the 2013/14 season. Let's dive in and check out what Kyler has to say about the Rockets, Suns, and Timberwolves….

  • The Rockets listened to offers on Omer Asik earlier in the offseason, and there were teams with interest, but given the health questions still surrounding Dwight Howard, Houston was reluctant to part with Asik and put everything on D12.
  • Jeremy Lin's future in Houston also isn't entirely set in stone, but the Rockets figure to give Lin and Asik a chance to establish roles with the club early on, says Kyler. If Lin, Asik, or anyone else isn't fitting into the team's system, trades could be explored.
  • While the Suns have been adamant that Marcin Gortat is a core piece for this season, Kyler thinks it's inevitable that the veteran big man is shopped and/or moved by the trade deadline, considering he's in a contract year.
  • Eric Bledsoe is eligible for a contract extension this offseason, but the Suns may want to see how he adjusts to a bigger role before making a long-term commitment, says Kyler. If Bledsoe emerges as the long-term answer at point guard, it could make Goran Dragic a trade candidate down the road.
  • The T-Wolves' roster looks solid entering the 2013/14 season, but there's some uncertainty surrounding head coach Rick Adelman. Sources tell Kyler that Adelman isn't retiring, but his wife's health problems mean that the coach's future in Minnesota remains up in the air. It's not clear what will happen if Adelman has to miss a significant chunk of time again, Kyler notes.

International Notes: Collins, Joseph, McCamey

A day after we heard that former NBA first-rounder Mardy Collins was nearing an agreement in Italy, Sutor Montegranaro has officially announced the signing (hat tip to Sportando). As players continue to sign with non-NBA teams, let's round up a few more of today's international notes….

  • As Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun tweets, Team Canada has finalized its summer roster, and Kris Joseph isn't on it — he has left the team to sign a deal in China. It's not clear which team Joseph is joining, but we heard last week that he had a pair of offers from CBA clubs.
  • Former Illinois guard Demetri McCamey has signed a one-year contract with Australian team Cairns Taipans, according to Shams Charania of RealGM.com. McCamey, who played for the Timberwolves in Summer League action last month, won't have an NBA out in the deal.
  • Italy's Mens Sans Siena has announced several new signings, including ex-Piston Kim English and Nuggets second-rounder Erick Green (hat tip to Sportando). We had previously heard that both players were heading to Italy for the 2013/14 season.
  • Former Laker Derrick Caracter has officially signed with Polish team Slask Wroclaw, according to the club (hat tip to Sportando).

Tracy McGrady Announces NBA Retirement

After 16 NBA seasons and nearly 1,000 total regular-season and playoff games, Tracy McGrady has decided to call it a career. T-Mac officially announced his retirement on ESPN's First Take today, according to the show's Twitter account.

McGrady, 34, signed late in the season with the Spurs, joining the team in time for its playoff run, though he didn't play much in the postseason. Back in June, we heard that he was expected to consider retirement this offseason, but as recently as two weeks ago, a report suggested that the veteran swingman was still considering pursuing a deal in the NBA or in China. It sounds as if McGrady hasn't entirely ruled out that latter possibility.

"Officially retired from the NBA," McGrady said, when asked about the possibility of playing in China (link via ESPN.com). "Door's still open."

In 938 career NBA games, McGrady racked up over 18,000 points, good for a 19.6 PPG average. The seven-time All-Star started his career with the Raptors before joining the Magic, Rockets, Knicks, Pistons, Hawks, and Spurs. McGrady led the NBA in scoring twice, and was named to an All-NBA team seven times, including two appearances on the First Team.

According to Basketball-Reference, McGrady earned approximately $163MM over the course of his NBA career.

On this date in 1965, we learned that even legends can be petty.  Celtics star Bill Russell signed a contract as the NBA's highest paid player, making one dollar more than arch-rival Wilt Chamberlain.  Russell had threatened to retire if he didn't make more than the Big Dipper, so the C's gave him a $100,001 contract to top Wilt's $100K deal.

Odds & Ends: Pierce, Odom, Collins, Cavs

The Sixers took their time in appointing a head coach this summer so it's no surprise to see them making late additions to the staff.  Today, Philadelphia plucked Grizzlies assistant Lloyd Pierce to work alongside head coach Brett Brown, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo (on Twitter).  Here's more from around the Association..

  • A close contact of Lamar Odom told Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork (on Twitter) that even though Odom "is going through a lot in his personal life" he wants to join the Lakers.
  • Nets coach Jason Kidd acknowledged that Jason Collins was a candidate to join the team this offseason, but there's no longer a place for the center with 15 men on the roster, writes Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.  “I think he can still play,” Kidd said. “His knowledge as a veteran. There’s always a veteran that can help a young team. I think he’ll find a job at some point here.”
  • Contrary to a report back in May, the Cavs don't plan to bring Hungarian center Greg Somogyi in to training camp, writes Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Plain Dealer.  The 7'3" big man was with the Lakers, and coach Mike Brown, in training camp last season.  The Cavs are still putting together their training camp roster, but they have invited St. Mary's point guard Matthew Dellavedova and are considering former Georgetown forward Henry Sims.

Clippers Nearing Deal With Antawn Jamison?

8:56pm: The Clippers have expressed renewed interest as of late, but there's no offer yet, a source tells Marc J. Spears of Yahoo (on Twitter).  The Grizzlies and Bulls are also in the mix.

8:21pm: The Clippers are closing in on a deal with free agent Antawn Jamison, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com (via Twitter).  The Clippers have been in talks with the veteran for much of the summer.  Terms of the deal are not yet known but the Clips can only offer Jamison the veteran's minimum.

Jamison, 37, spent last season with the Lakers, averaging 9.4 PPG and 4.8 RPG in 21.5 minutes per contest.  It was a noticeable step back from the forward's previous career averages of 19.5 PPG and 7.9 RPG in 36.3 minutes per game.  Jamison's new club might not give him the opportunity to shine as he has in years past, but it will save him a bit in moving fees.

The Clippers were said to be waiting on other options, namely Lamar Odom, before signing Jamison.  In fact, they told Jamison as much nearly two weeks ago when he thought he was on the verge of a deal.

The UNC product is represented by the Wasserman Media Group, according to the Hoops Rumors Agency Database.

Poll: Biggest Bust Of 2013 NBA Draft?

Last week, we asked Hoops Rumors readers to weigh in on who they think will be the Rookie of the Year out of the 2013 Draft.  Victor Oladipo of the Magic was the leading votegetter with over 26% of the vote while Kelly Olynyk of the Celtics finished second with about 16%.  Interestingly, No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett got about 7% of the vote, putting him behind the likes of Trey Burke, Cody Zeller, and the ever popular "someone else".  

There are definitely some intriguing prospects coming out of this June's draft, but let's face it, the 2013 class has nothing on the 2014 class and it might even be one of the weaker drafts of the last decade, if you believe what some scouts had to say.  It's time to look at the glass half empty and decide who will be the biggest bust out of the top ten picks.  Remember: disappointment is relative to the expectation level.  What might be a decent career for someone later in the draft could be viewed as abject failure for someone at the top.  Happy voting!
