12:25pm: If the deal happens, Chad Ford of ESPN.com (on Twitter) believes that the Raptors will target Clint Capela at No. 22. The Spurs have been hoping that he’d slide to No. 30.
11:18am: Stein now hears (Twitter link) that the deal would more likely send the No. 37 pick to Memphis along with Salmons for Prince and the No. 22.
11:14am: The Raptors are in the hunt to acquire the Grizzlies’ No. 22 pick in tonight’s draft but would have to take back Tayshaun Prince to make something happen, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. The potential swap would send John Salmons and the No. 59 pick to Memphis for Prince and the No. 22 pick (link). Stein says that Toronto could be making the deal with guard Tyler Ennis in mind, though they already own the No. 20 selection.
The No. 22 pick wouldn’t guarantee the Raptors that they’ll land Ennis – the Syracuse guard is currently projected to go No. 21 to the Thunder by DraftExpress – but it’d give them a puncher’s chance for sure. Prince, who is a shell of the player he once was, is slated to earn $7.7MM in the final season of his deal. Prince averaged 6.0 PPG with 3.1 RPG last season and posted a career-low PER of 8.2.
If this deal is to get Ennis, why wouldn’t they just take him at 20? I think this deal has other motivations.
yeah it doesn’t seem like whoever wrote this knows they have #20
I’m well aware, just bad phrasing. Its been updated.
Maybe they are planning to offer 20 & 22 to move up a few spots to grab Ennis?
uhhhhh, you know they have 20 right? They could take Ennis there is they want to
20+22 for to move up? But prince is a nice bench piece got a good defender
That could be a possibility. Moving up for what though? Not likely to get value on a PG in the range they could move into unless they like Napier and don’t think he’ll be there. Ennis should be there at 20, imo.
Elfrid Peyton is the one they should be looking to move up for although i don’t see him getting past Orlando at 12 (unless they take Exum at 4) or Minny at 13
If the Kings keep their pick everybody seems convinced Payton will be off the board at 8. Would be a good move if they can get him though.
Unless Napier and Payton go well before they’re expected and the heat find a way into the top 19. But this also could set them up to get Ennis and Jarami Grant. (Teammates at cuse)
This trade would make no sense we can let Salmons go for nothing why would we trade for a guy who would cost more money? And I agree with the above comments we have the 20th pick.
Because taking on an expiring contract that can play bench minutes + getting an asset in return like the 22nd is big. Especially if they’re trying to move up.
If the Raptors aren’t planning on spending in free agency this offseason, maybe they see Prince’s expiring deal as having value at the deadline? Just a guess.
Prince can turn into either trade bait at the deadline or a great defender off the bench. This trade also technically reduces our salary by $300K and we get a higher draft pick. This trade does make sense.
We can buy out Salmons for 1 million so how do we save money? And Salmons contract would be 7 mill not 7.7 which is Princes contract. We have the 20th pick already
Salmons and prince almost make the same salary salmons is actually paid exactly 300k more
yes but Salmons can be bought out for only $1 million
If the raptors lose Kyle Lowrey they’ll need to replace his scoring. I say take Ennis at 20 if he’s there and use the 22nd pick for a guy like Pj Hairston or grab a guy like Mitch Mcgary to help with depth at center.
I’d take on Prince and his expiring contract for the 22nd pick.
