JULY 9TH, 12:43pm: The deal is official, the team announced (on Twitter).
JULY 2ND, 8:01am: The Knicks will sign Arron Afflalo to a two-year deal worth $16MM with a player option on the final season, reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com. The agreement gives the Sam Goldfeder client slightly more in average annual value than he would have made had he picked up his $7.75MM player option with the Blazers.
The deal comes as no surprise, as Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports on Monday identified the Knicks as the front-runners for the shooting guard who turns 30 in October, and Chris Mannix of SI.com reported Tuesday that Afflalo was open to a deal that allowed him to hit free agency again in a year or two. The Knicks were to meet with Afflalo today, and it sounds like they either met early this morning or reached agreement before having a sitdown.
New York will use part of its nearly $30MM in cap flexibility on the eight-year veteran, but plenty of room is left over to sign Greg Monroe to a max contract. Monroe is reportedly meeting with the Knicks and three other teams, including Portland.
Knicks need to develop a new culture. This is a start with a veteran leader. I don’t think we will do enough this summer and the regular season to make the playoffs but Afflalo is a great addition especially for the young guys.
You forget we play in the East. We can make the playoffs if we add Monroe and a couple other low price veterans. If Melo is healthy, along with Afflalo and Monroe, we are already better than last year…even 40 wins gets this team the 7 or 8 seed. The Nets, Celtics, and Bucks all made the playoffs last year and other than the Bucks, they will probably be worse than last year. The Heat should be better but I don’t see any other team competing for the last 3 or 4 spots…maybe Indy with George coming back. Knicks won’t win a championship next year but they will lay the foundation for attracting a MAX guy next summer.
Wow great value, especially with some of the deals going around. I still don’t get why they want Monroe. Melo plays the same position. They need a 3 and D wing player and a rim protector
Uh….Afflalo is the 3 and D wing player…
I mean they need another one smartass….
Hey there! I realize this is somewhat offtopic but I had to ask. abdekdggkedcakee
