The Mavericks have parted ways with center JaVale McGee, the team announced via press release. He now becomes an unrestricted free agent, provided he clears waivers. The franchise was reportedly looking to find a trade partner for McGee, whose salary of $1,403,611 for 2016/17 was scheduled to become fully guaranteed on July 12th.
It’s no surprise Dallas found no takers for McGee, given that free agency is in full swing and there are plenty of available reserve options still on the market for a new home. Since the big man’s guarantee had not yet kicked in, the Mavs won’t be on the hook for any salary as a result of waiving McGee.
McGee, 28, appeared in 34 games for the Mavs this past season and averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per outing. The center shot .575/.000/.500 on the year.
Wonder if the wizard would ever consider reunion with big McGee . He still young and athletic and he would give them size and com cheap as third center and if he act up again they can release I’m . Maybe 1 year 850,000 vet not guaranteed contract. If ale the team out of training camp great if not . No problem.
Hard to believe he is 28. He’s like the Wily Mo Pena of basketball. Absolute monster but either he dunks or he misses the dunk and it flies into the stands.
I wanted the Cavs to take a chance on McGee. Now that they are bringing in Chris Anderson that might preclude them from doing so. We have great rebounders but very little in rim protection now that we moved Mozgov.
With McGee’s athleticism I felt he could provide that big man rim protection but also get up and down the floor in Lue’s fast paced speed. He would’ve been great off the bench.
I want the wolves to pick him up… I really am banking on Pek retiring though
At one time the Celtics really tried hard to sign McGee but they couldn’t agree on contract terms. They still need a rim protector and he might be the one.
