Much has changed over the course of the first two and a half months of the season, writes John Smallwood of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Sixers are now faced with different circumstances than what they began the year with. Part-way through January, it appears as though Jahlil Okafor — and not Nerlens Noel — is the most likely to be traded.
Okafor, Smallwood writes, is an impressive big man and goes on to cite the 21-year-old’s All-Rookie team performance last year as one of the reasons why. Even in some recent performances, the center has shown that he’s a solid young player, perhaps capable of averaging 20 and 10 eventually. The emergence of Embiid as a reliable option at the five for the Sixers, has rendered Okafor’s services less necessary than they would be otherwise.
In order to take advantage of Okafor’s value, the Sixers should look to trade the big man in order to reconfigure the balance of their roster and Smallwood gives several examples of players that could theoretically come back to Philadelphia in a trade. Smallwood offers Jaylen Brown, Jordan Clarkson and Doug McDermott as three perimeters threats that could potentially be had in exchange for Okafor.
There’s more from the Atlantic Division:
- It’s too early to think about free agency, Kyle Lowry tells ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, but for whatever it’s worth, the guard considers Toronto “home”. Currently under contract for $12MM with a player option for $12MM in 2017/18, Lowry could net a significant pay raise over the summer if he opts out. “When the time comes, then I will worry about [free agency],” says Lowry. “[The Raptors] will definitely will be an option.“
- The Nets have a decision on Brook Lopez to make prior to the trade deadline, but an injury to Jeremy Lin has made things more complicated, writes Seth Berkman of the New York Times. The franchise would ideally like to see how Lopez and Lin fare together before making a significant change but the tandem has been limited to just a handful of games healthy at the same time.
- Desperate for a positive development, the Knicks have considered playing Kristaps Porzingis at the five, writes Ian Begley of ESPN. “Sometimes it’s a chance you have to take, but we continue to look over that,” head coach Jeff Hornacek said. “We just need to mix it up maybe a little more.” Moving Porzingis to the center position would push Joakim Noah to the bench.
- We discussed the meeting between Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony earlier, but it’s worth adding here that Jackson specifically told the veteran forward he did not subscribe to the criticisms in the now infamous Charley Rosen article, says Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
I wouldn’t trade any of those guys for Okafor if I were any of those 3 teams…
Also, FINALLY, THE knicks have woken up, and realized that Porzingis should be playing the 5. It’s amazing that it has taken this long, but Phil Jackson wouldn’t allow Hornacek to coach the team, especially after they paid Noah for whatever reason, and signed Jennings over Galloway….
Rose, Lee, Thomas, Melo, Porzingis
Holiday, Noah, Kuzminaskas, Jennings and Baker off the bench, with O’Quinn or Hernangomez seeing minutes in certain matcups
Another option could deepen the bench rotation by starting Baker at the 2 for some minutes, though I’m not as in favor of it…Rose, Baker, Lee, Melo, Porzingis
Holiday, Thomas, Noah, Kuzminaskas primarily off the bench, Jennings, O’Quinn, and Hernangomez at the end of the rotation
Would a trade line up with the Thunder for Okafor? Send them Payne, Lauvergne, and another player/draft pick?
You want to pair Kanter and Okafor?
Uh, Porzingus shouldn’t be playing center. For quick spurts here and there, sure. But he’s not a center. Especially the way he shoots.
Join phil jackson, in that assessment, in the late 90s
Is Porzingis a real rim protector? I know he gets blocks but it’s usually in help defense when he comes out of nowhere, same with his rebounds. Keep him at the four and give O’Quinn more minutes, Knicks were playing better with that lineup and Noah out with an injury anyway.
Porzingis is a good pick and roll defender, and can protect the rim. Also makes them quicker on the defensive end, and more disruptive to try and get some transition opportunities. Offensively, opens up space for Rose, Melo, and Porzingis. It also allows Noah to be the leader of that 2nd unit, and give them more balance defensively
I’d trade McDermott for him in a heartbeat
Trade scenario…
76ers get david lee jonathan simmons 2018 1st round draft pick
76ers get a young deffensive gaurd simmons that can shoot and apread the floor and a vet in lee that will post up on the block and great on his feet can shoot mid range..
Spurs get okafor would start over pau gasol just cause he is more athletic and can post up bigger tougher bigs and okafor is a better rebounder then gasol and under timmys wing he can expand his nba star abilities even further not to mention being coach by pop will make him point out his weaknesses and bloom him to a legit big man for years to come…
76ers lineup Ben simmons, jonathan simmons, hollis thompson, nerlans noel, joel embid thats a solid young defensive team
Spurs lineup tony parker, danny green, kwhai leonard, lamarcus aldridge, jahlil okafor
Your thoughts…
Hollis Thompson is a free agent…I don’t know how you can use athletic to describe Okafor. Can’t play defense. Ball stopper. Remedial Al Jefferson at best. He is a good bench option at the 5 for certain teams. Spurs don’t need him. They have an improved defensively Aldridge and Gasol, and Dedmond off the bench for rim protection
Yes, the Sixers would move Okafor for a useless draft pick, an old backup center and a bench player.
Not. Happening.
McBrickit for Okafor? Not sure who would be dumber: the Bulls for not making that trade, or the Sixers for offering it.
Okafor has value
I think you do trade him or Noel for a wing then get a PG in the draft
I’d trade Noel preferably
Okafor is under contract longer and let him be the go to on the 2nd unit.
Zero chance the Celtics trade Brown for Okafor, makes no sense.
I am a Sixers fan and here is my wish list if they trade Okafor
Terrence Ross n Norman Powell
Mario Hezonja n a pick
Clarkson
Jamal Murray or Gary Harris
None of those teams other than the Lakers would possibly want him.
id take okafor for mcbuckets in a heartbeat. unfortunately garpax isnt very intelligent.
I think Okafor could thrive on the Bucks. With a real player coach J Kidd and KG to mentor him I believe the sky is the limit. We have plenty of guys to toss in the trade to spice it up as well as draft picks
The Raptors take Lopez and Booker off the Nets’ hands for Valinciunas, Ross or Powell, Carroll, VanVleet and a 1st rounder. Some cost-controlled youngsters (Carroll excepted, but it works for the salaries) for the Nets and an 18-month window for the Raptors.
