Combo guard Austin Rivers has been discussed in trade talks between the Knicks and Clippers regarding Carmelo Anthony, an NBA executive told Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times.
The Clippers have emerged as a potential landing spot for Anthony but are apparently unwilling to part with any of their Big Three — Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan — to facilitate a trade.
The Knicks are known to think very favorably of Rivers, according to Sam Amick of USA Today, as they made a push to sign him during free agency, Bill Oram of the Orange County Register notes.
The son of coach Doc Rivers is enjoying a career year and his production has jumped since he joined the starting lineup. Rivers is averaging 17.7 PPG, 3.9 APG and 2.8 RPG over the last 14 games. He signed a three-year contract this summer to rejoin the Clippers with a starting salary of $11MM.
That alone won’t be nearly enough to match up salaries, as Anthony is making $24.6MM this season. Jamal Crawford, who is making $13.25MM, has also had his name tossed into trade discussions, according to Turner. J.J. Redick, who is making $7.38MM, is another logical candidate in potential trade scenarios, Amick adds.
Of course, Anthony would have to waive his no-trade clause to make any deal come to fruition.
One unnamed GM believes it will happen, telling Sam Amico of AmicoHoops.net, “I’m betting he is playing next to Blake, Chris Paul and DeAndre right after (trade) deadline.” (Twitter link).
What will the Clippers depth look like after losing those guys?
They wouldn’t get all three, as the salaries wouldn’t match. It could go Rivers, Crawford, and picks for Melo. Another option would be Rivers, Reddick, Wes Johnson, and picks for Melo. Each deal could include Brice Johnson too if the Knicks like him enough to take on extra salary or to trade a player along with Melo.
Melo makes 24.5
Crawford makes 13.2
Rivers makes 11.0
Reddick makes 7.3 (last year of his deal)
Probably the best deal –
Knicks get: Rivers, Reddick, Wes Johnson, Brice Johnson, and either a couple 2nd round picks or a 2021 1st rd pick.
Clippers get: Melo and Ron Baker.
there not trading jj
The Clippers were interested in Courtney Lee. The Knicks are the ones trying to get rid of Melo, so I think if they offered to include Lee then that would be their best bet of getting the Clippers to take Melo.
Trade kicker of 15% makes is salary about 30 million
What kinda package could the Clippers give the Knicks? They don’t have first rounder, do they? I guess Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford, J.J Reddick, Brice Johnson and a couple of 2018 or 2019 picks?
Need a 3rd or 4th team to make it work.
Well he is not good at all, sooooo, so? Everyone knows his dad is the coach. It other than that, why would any team miss Austin Rivers? LAC fans won’t care, NYK fans won’t be impressed.
Melo’s contract, play, and age make him almost impossible to trade. Who wants that baggage? I think he could make a good 6th man though at this point.
Rivers is a solid backup PG and really showed up in the playoffs last year after CP3 and Blake went down. Granted he’s a ball-dominant, score first point, bu you can do a lot worse than him. Maybe watch a couple of games before making crazy claims.
true. people need to wake up and realize he’s actually a good bench option
Not really
Yeah definitely I didn’t realize how good Austin Rivers was until the bloody nose playoff game against the Blazers last year. Easy to buy into the high school prodigy-NBA bust storyline and the fact he plays for his dad but watch some games and you’ll see how valuable he is.
Exactly. Will he ever live up to his draft position or the hype around him? Probably not, but he’s a solid backup guard, which is more than tons of players taken before him from previous drafts could say. He gets stuck with the belief about his dad’s nepotism and that big contract, but the only reason he was resigned to that big of a deal was because the Clippers couldn’t afford to lose him. As in, they could’ve let him walk but they wouldn’t have been able to sign someone cheaper to replace him.
Definitely and I think he could’ve got more money elsewhere to be honest. The Clippers also would be much worse if they didn’t have him with how much CP3 gets hurt recently. I never thought that I would one day be defending Austin Rivers on the internet haha
The one that the New York Knicks should get rid of is Phil Jackson because he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing I think Melo should stay
Agreed. Phil jackson is a clown.
Melo is a clown. Do you Melo fan girls realize how much better your team plays when he’s OUT of the lineup?? Jackson realizes he’s useless, and that’s why he wants him out.
Yeah Phil knows a washed up player when he sees one, that’s why he gave Joakim Noah 70 million dollars.
Chicks would be in a good position if Phil would have kept Robin Lopez and signed Rondo to play with MarshMelo. L
Yea… I don’t see this trade happening. If these guys were all on 1 year deals the maybe. I don’t think Phil wants to be tied to Austin Rivers & Jamal Crawford for 3 years. He already screwed up giving Noah 4 years. Looking at NBA Trade Machine honestly was like “who the bleep is Lance Thomas and why does he have a 4 year contract??” Phil gave these long deals to a bunch of scrubs. I didn’t realize it was that bad… Lee 4 years, Noah 4 years, Thomas 4 years, looks like a waste of 34M a year.
I don’t see the Celtics working out either. Giving up Johnson, Jerebko, Olynyk, and Young just to match salary for Melo.
Can release Crawford in the last year of his deal if needed. Only 3 mil guaranteed.
Wow I’ve never seen anyone talk bad about the Lance Thomas deal, he’s a solid role player for the price they have him at and Courtney Lee is a very solid player too when it’s the right fit, the problem is the organization. Noah’s deal is ridiculous though all you can do is laugh about that one (if you’re not a Knicks fan)
3-Way Deal.
Knicks get: Gibson & Mirotic
Bulls get: Melo
Nets get: Rondo + McDermott + 2017 Swap from Bulls + 2018 Lotto Protected 1st from the Bulls
Fixes a few headaches for each team.
What’d the Nets give up in this trade to get two first rounders??? You don’t just get two first rounders plus a friendly contract and young guy for giving up nothing? That must be a package for like Brook Lopez or something.
Huh?
What do the nets give up here you must be from brooklyn
Nets are at 70M they don’t have to actually give up anything. They can dump salary on the Nets though. The Swap is literally a couple spot move.. Kings give up their pick to the Bulls if it’s out of top 10 so they would have 1 maybe 2 picks. But the 2018 1st is essentially for taking Rondo. Mcbuckets is not a huge chip… Very tiny chip to help salary match.
What a foolish trade. You definitely have no basketball iq
Break it down then. Who is taking Rondo? Name a team that takes Rondo without a 1st attached. Knicks aren’t going to take years of bad contracts just to get out of Melo. The best they will get is a clean slate next season and Cap Space to sign a FA. The only player the Bulls value in the pieces given up is Taj. They dump Mirotic and Rondo and McDerm helps makes $ work. Plus swapping is the NBA latest fad in trades.
You’re right that no team takes Rondo without extra compensation. But Rondo’s contract next year isn’t fully guaranteed so he’ll likely be released by whichever team he is on (so why trade for him when Chicago is likely to release him at some point, this season or in the offseason, and you can sign him for cheap without his small guarantee for next year…which i think is around $3). But even going on the basis that the Bulls want to get rid of him right away, the aren’t giving up two first round picks and a young rotation player in McDermott just to get rid of him. Watch a couple of Bulls games and I think you’ll see that the Bulls definitely value McDermott too.
Who plays the 4 for the knicks in this scenario? Guess it doesn’t matter b/c melo was already not playing the position. Also, wondering how it would lineup and effect the Clippers depth, and their defense b/c Melo and Blake play the same position, and neither are good defenders, although Melo has improved on that end in the last few years, just he is better at the 4…
Too lazy to check the money in the deal…would Rivers, Crawford, Brice Johnson, and future draft picks (earliest they can trade is 2021 right? Do the clippers still have that pick?) For Melo and Baker work money wise?
I would guess the rotations for each team would be:
Knicks: Rose, Rivers, Lee, Kuzminaskas, Porzingis
Thomas, Crawford, Noah, Holiday, some O’Quinn or Hernangomez, Jennings, Johnson at the end of the bench
For the Clippers, it’s tougher figuring it out, as they’d probably be better off with one of Melo or Blake off the bench, but that’s not happening, so they’ll need to get creative with their rotations: CP3, Reddick, Melo, Blake, DeAndre
Mbah a Moute, Speights, Felton, Wes johnson, Allen Anderson, Brandon Bass, Pierce, Baker.with the last 5 being interchangeable depending on matchups? Tough to figure out for me, to be honest
Porzingus plays the 4 for the Knicks. Blake and Melo do not play the same position, unless the Knicks go small. And Melo’s defense had gotten worse, not better. He looks like Harden out there.
Join phil jackson in the 90s if you think melo should be a SF, especially on the knicks roster. Melo’s defense got better the year they got Chandler. Part of that was Melo playing the 4, but he brought more consistent effort and has since. Most if his career, he was somewhat capable, but wasn’t consistent with his effort. That has been better the last few years. He is just on a team run by a clown that won’t let Hornacek do his job and coach the team the way he should, and wants to. That’s not Carmelo Anthony’s fault.
Also, porzingis should be at the 5
No, I see where u come from : he’s over 7 feet. But he is skinny as hell and he gets beat up in the post against big centers. He’d get injured
Agreed. He’s too skinny to play the 5. I think he’s better off at the 4 (in a Dirk-esque role) than bulking up and playing the 5 on a consistent basis.
Even dirk is playing the 5 right now, and he is nowhere near the defender Porzingis is
He is a really good pick and roll defender that can cover ground and get back and protect the rim. In today’s NBA, he is a 5. Having multiple bigs on the floor at the same time has clearly given them spacing issues as well. Noah or O’Quinn clog the lane, and there is no space for Rose, Melo, or Porzingis to operate. They clearly play better in 1 big lineups. Also, they have issues defensively, especially off the bench, and moving Noah there helps in that regard, and he can be a leader on that 2nd unit. Moving Porzingis to the 5 and playing “small” allows them to be more disruptive on the defensive end, and should allow them to get out in transition more often to score easier baskets at times. It’s obvious how this team shpuld be playing, with the way it’s built, and it’s obvious how Hornacek wants to play, but Phil Jackson is such a clown stuck 20 years in the past, that he doesn’t understand how to maximize this roster. Noah deal was terroble, but it’s still semi salvageable if you use him in the right role. Brandon jennings deal made zero sense. They need another guard or wing off the bench that can defend, and preferably knock down shots. Good thing they let Galloway go to sign Jennings…
Maybe they trade Austin rivers and might even give up jj Riddick Brandon bass even their first rounder exchange the clippers get carmelo Anthony and Courtney Lee.
Phil isn’t going to take back contracts unless the player(s) are good. He’s looking to reboot and rebuild around Porzingus. Moving Melo and Rose’s exciting contact opens up close to 50M.
Draft picks, young talent, or star player (ex: Love) is what will come back.
*expiring, not exciting. Although exciting once he’s off the books.
At this point, we dont know who the clippers will and won’t deal. When it comes to melo, anybody not named Chris Paul is a possibility to be dealt. Clippers have played and failed with pretty much the same roster each season. Paul isnt getting any younger. Get him some more firepower.
This has to make the Clippers the favorites out West if everyone is healthy. Blake can finally be the third option behind Paul and Melo and flourish. Every playoff team goes 8 deep and they still would have Felton,Bass, and Speights which are not bad at all as bench options assuming Rivers, and Crawford go with a pick or two.
three way deal knicks Carmelo and lee to clippers knicks get Reddick rivers a first in 2018 n 2017 second and Johnson knicks trade jennigs and oquinn to cavs for 2017 first 2018 second and Gibson.
Neither the Clippers nor Cavs can trade their first round pick til like 2020. Also, who is Gibson? Do you mean Taj Gibson of the Bulls? Or some other player who you might’ve misspelled/autocorrected.
Clips don’t have any picks until 2021 (earliest), maybe not until 2022. A trade has to almost exactly match salaries because the Clips are hard capped. Outside of the big 3, the contracts are bad or small. No combination equals Melo + trade kicker and yields any cap relief for Knicks. Rivers and Redick have some value. The rest coming back are bad contracts and maybe those remote draft picks. A third team to save the day? Doubt it.
Please no Jamal Crawford.
