There are some rival executives who think that the Bulls and Celtics will revisit trade talks involving Jimmy Butler in the coming weeks, according to K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune. The two teams discussed Butler around the time of the 2016 draft, and as Johnson points out, Boston still holds the same assets that were a major part of those June talks: Jae Crowder, Marcus Smart, and multiple first-round picks.
Johnson rightly notes that Butler has a chance to become eligible for a designated veteran extension in the summer of 2018, if he makes an All-NBA team next season. The possibility of qualifying for that mega-extension may sour Butler on the idea of a trade, since he wouldn’t be eligible for a designated veteran deal if he changes teams. Of course, the veteran swingman doesn’t have any sort of no-trade clause, so he couldn’t stop a deal if the Bulls wanted to move him.
Since those June trade talks, there has been little to no indication that Chicago intends to move its biggest star. However, as Johnson writes, it’s not out of the question that last week’s drama involving Butler, Dwyane Wade, and Rajon Rondo generates a new round of “internal debate” about the team’s long-term core.
As we wait to see whether Butler stays put through the trade deadline, let’s round up a few more Bulls notes…
- The 14th overall pick in the 2016 draft, Denzel Valentine has endured an up-and-down rookie season so far. In his aforementioned piece for The Tribune, Johnson details how Valentine has responded to the injury issues, illnesses, and coaching decisions that have slowed him down in his first NBA season.
- Bobby Portis is another young Bulls player who has seen his playing time fluctuate this season under Fred Hoiberg, but he got a chance to see some action on Sunday with Taj Gibson ailing, Johnson writes in a separate article for The Tribune. As for Gibson, he hopes to return to Chicago’s lineup on Wednesday night in Oklahoma City after receiving a cortisone shot on Sunday.
- In the wake of Rondo’s Instagram post last week, in which he defended his younger teammates and criticized the actions of Butler and Wade, the veteran point guard has received praise from those younger teammates, according to Johnson. Nikola Mirotic and Jerian Grant are among the Bulls players that referred to Rondo as a great teammate.
As long as Butler agrees to a veterans extension, I wouldn’t be reluctant to give up Crowder, Smart, and 2 of the Celtics picks, not either of Brooklyn’s. if you wanna take away Crowder then I will give Smart, Brooklyn’s 2018 pick, Jaylen
Yeah no thanks. We aint giving you an a top 10 player for a pile of piss.
Bulls shouldn’t (doesn’t mean they won’t because they have one of the worst FO’s in the sport) settle for anything less than the two Nets picks. Jimmy is a franchise changing talent, a top 10-15 player, which necessitates a franchise changing haul in return. Crowder, Smart, Bradley etc. are just filler. Nothing but the picks from BKN will give them equal value for a player of Jimmys caliber.
When proposing deals keep in mind that the offer must exceed the value of keeping Jimmy around and building around the 3-4 years his window is still open. Trading for spare parts doesn’t come close to bringing back the value/upside the Bulls need for Jimmy.
If celtics get jimmy (assuming he doesn’t mess up their chem) they would be my favorites in the east
Rest assured, he will mess up the chemistry. He’s a clubhouse cancer.
i think its a decent package. you also have to realize that giving up jimmy also signals the beginning to a major rebuild. so the picks hold major value. i dont know the numbers but i think the difficulty would come from matching contracts.
As mentioned in the above article, if Butler is traded, he will NOT be eligible for the veterans extension.
The bulls need to stop with all this bs.
If im the Sixers i’d offer up Okafor, Holmes and the Kings 2019 unprotected pick,
Not a good enough package. Have to keep in mind that building around Jimmy is more enticing than that trade offer. Whichever deal is on the table, it has to exceed the value of keeping and building around Jimmy.
Wiggins, Lavine and 1st round pick for Jimmy to be reunited with Thibs……
Yes
I would do that on in a New York Minute lbvs
Way too much IMO. I could see them doing either Wiggins and the first round pick or Lavine, Shabazz and the first round pick.
Are u kidding me? The timberwolves could get Demarcus cousins with that pile of gold
TWolves don’t need a center
1 of Lavine or Wiggins Dieng
Please pass whatever you’re smoking
Absolutely none of this matters as long as Paxon and Forman are running the show. Their incompetency is what has the Bulls in this predicament. Until they are gone, it will just be one bad decision after the next.
Unfortunately I share your pessimism
I agree as well. This FO is a mess and they constantly blame others rather then themselves. Stop screwing around and build around Butler. You hope you score a player of his caliber. You scored him picking at 30!!!
It’s the only thing you as a FO have done in the last few years!
I hate this team, because I HATE THIS FRONT OFFICE! They will not go anywhere until Jerry kicks the bucket or opens his eyes.
FO, stop blame others for your mess and screw ups
Agree 100%
What about crowder, smart, The rights to yabusele, the celtics and nets 2018 pick, and the clippers and cavs second rd pick this year
None of those players and only the Nets pick has the chance to be a franchise changer. Again, with that offer the Bulls are better off building around Jimmy for 3-4 years.
2 first rnd picks , 2 second rnd picks ,2 probable starters and a hopeful good prospect????
I don’t want a Celtics “First Rounder” the sits at #29 (ish) in the draft. You can’t claim that as an asset.
Second rounders are just filler as well. Half of the offer is filler, and the other half is a lottery ticket and 2 good ROLE players. 10 dimes doesn’t equal a dollar in the NBA. The only way you move a franchise changing talent with a 3-4 year window is to give up franchise changing assets. 2 BKN picks and one of those filler players on your bench.
Crowder is more than a role player at this point. He’s a legit starting player. I think this deal is fair, swapping the C’s 2018 pick for any non BKN pick they have. Maybe 2.
How is that even close to a fair deal? What of that load of crap has any chance of scratching the surface of Butlers talent? And please don’t say Crowder, he’s a 6th man of the year at best.
6th man of the year candidates could start on every non-playoff team, and some playoff teams. The Brooklyn pick, and Yabusele has the ceiling of Draymond and the floor of a cheap role player.
2nd round picks have almost no value in the NBA. It would be like trading for D-League players.
IT last pick of the 2nd round… Hmm look how that turned out
I like that offer and think the Bulls would take it, but trade Boston’s ’19 first instead so they still have their own in ’18.
Off the top of my head, I only see Boston, Minnesota, and Milwaukee with the pieces to get Butler, and I don’t know if it makes sense that they should do it, except maybe Boston, but I especially don’t think the Bulls should trade him. They could get big packages, which would help, but I never like the idea of trading a potential superstar like that, especially with his good contract.
It’d be difficult to figure it out, but I’d guess the packages to be something like
Boston: Terry Rozier, Jordan Mickey, Avery Bradley (or Smart and Jerebko), Jae Crowder Nets 2017 1st rounder, and Celtics 2018 1st rounder for Butler and Grant (and MCW)
Minnesota: Lavine, Dunn, Muhammad 2017 1st round er, 2018 2nd rounder, 2019 2nd rounder for Butler
Milwaukee: Khis Middleton, Rashad Vaughn 2017 1st rounder, 2019 1st rounder 2018 2nd rounder for Butler
I could also see Denver having pieces for a potential deal. Butler and Gibson for Jamal Murray, Wll Barton, Nurkic, Faried Memphis 2017 1st rounder and Denver’s 2018 1st rounder?
I can also sort of see the Lakers or Utah having enough, but it would take a significant offer that might not make sense
Fred Hoiberg is clueless as a head coach. Only thing he ever changes in the rotattoo is who the starting PG is…you’d think he’d at least make an attempt to figure things out. I will continue to say it; Their rotations need to change. Their guards have been terrible. They’re getting nothing from anyone besides Butler, Wade, Taj Gibson, McDermott, and Lopez…as well as Taj has played, he needs to come off the bench. They need more balance on the floor, and to at least try to create a little spacing. Valentine, Wade, Butler, McDermott, Lopez…Taj, Rondo, Mirotic, Grant, MCW, Portis, Canaan. Those last 3 in certain situations. MCW can guard multiple positions. They need a shooter at the guard or wing spots pretty desperately. I’m not saying it will definitely work, but I think they at least have to try something different
I hope to god Cs dont acquire anyone. Save the picks and wait until the cavs and warriors are out of the way. Plus Cousins and Butler are both selfish players. No need for that in Boston
For the right deal, the Bulls need to cut him loose. Homeboy is not a leader. Mr. “I love drama.” Yea, that’s not a leader. Too childish, immature, and egotistical. He’s a clubhouse cancer. Trade him and Wade for a pile of draft picks, tank the rest of the season and hope to get a top 7 pick in next year’s draft. He a great two way player, but he’s more of a side kick than THE man, his attitude completely ruins his high level of play, and his ego will never allow him to be the sidekick that he needs is.
What would be a trade scenario for the C’s that doesnt involve the 17 nets pick or avery bradley?
I dont want to here nothing i want to actually know what you think would work
Terry Rozier, Jordan Mickey, Smart, Jerebko, Jae Crowder, Jaylen Brown, rights to Yabusele, and Celtics 2018 1st rounder, possibly another pick down the line for Butler and Grant and MCW would be my guess, but that’s giving up a lot of assets. It’s hard to figure out especially b/c most everyone will want the pick
Isaiah.
