As we noted last night, Sunday was another interesting day for the Knicks, as Carmelo Anthony faced questions about his future with the team and his potential willingness to waive his no-trade clause. The latest round of speculation was fueled by a column from Charley Rosen of FanRag. Rosen, a longtime Phil Jackson confidant, was extremely critical of Anthony, writing that the forward’s legs are “going, going, almost gone,” and adding that he has “outlived his usefulness” in New York.
Twice during Sunday night’s conversation with the media, Anthony was reminded that the critique came from Rosen, not Jackson. Rosen said in an email to Marc Berman of The New York Post that the opinions in the piece were entirely his, and that he hadn’t spoke at all to Jackson about them. However, as Frank Isola of The New York Daily News writes, the nine-time All-Star “had no trouble connecting the dots.”
Here are a few of Anthony’s notable postgame comments, via Isola and Berman:
On the idea that he has “outlived his usefulness” in New York:
“If that’s the case, if that’s where it’s coming from that side, I guess it’s a conversation we should have. If they feel my time in New York is over, I guess that’s a conversation we should have.
“Listen, if that’s how they feel, if that’s coming from that side, then that’s what’s coming from that side. I haven’t thought once about that. I hear it, hear all the rhetoric going on out there. I still come to work every day, play and bust my ass, and try not worry about it.”
On the fact that some media and fans have speculated about him waiving his no-trade clause:
“They want me out? People can have their own opinion, but I haven’t spoken about it. I haven’t mentioned it, not once. That’s been the trend when you start losing. … I think I posted that (on Instagram) the other day. When we lose, it’s me. When we win, it’s us. That’s how I feel. It is what it is.”
On whether he would waive his no-trade clause:
“I’ve never even thought about that. Like you said, I guess there’s people talking about it. I don’t know … it’s not something that I’ve thought about so far.”
On the Knicks’ poor performance so far this season:
“It’s a disappointment, but what can we do other than try to change it at this point? I don’t feel like the season is slipping away, but it doesn’t feel like an average slump either, because we’re much better than what we’re putting out on the court.”
“They want me out?
Well, TJ McConnell got the best of you the other day.
So, yeah, I am thinking that Knicks fans would want you out. Unless, of course you shape up, otherwise ship out!!!
I would love melo in DC but the Wiz don’t have enough assets to entice the knicks.
people need to stop saying Melo need to go.. because what you really gonna get for melo.. plus it’s not really him.. i feel like it’s all on Phil Jackson he need to go.. look back at that 2012-2013 year when they put good people around him how he was playing .. so i think Phil need to go asap
Fire Phil Jackson
Him Kupchack and Divac are worst execs/gms in the game
– Bulls get Melo
– Denver gets Gibson + Kings 11-30 pick from Bulls
– Philly gets Rondo, and waive him prob + top 3 protected 2018 1st from Knicks
Knicks get Mirotic, McDermott, Nurkic – Phil’s no-posse rule right?
Separate trade:;
-Wolves get Noah + cash/2nd
-Knicks get Rubio
trash for trash
Knicks throw out a Minnesota/Utah-esque 2017-18 line-up like:
5 – Nurkic
4 – Porzingis
3 – Mirotic
2 – McDermott
1 – Rubio
Side note. Minnesota’s Pekovic is done, so they do need an actual Veteran like a Noah, even if he’s diminished in skills he’s better than Cole Aldrich no?
No. Cole Aldrich has been tremendously productive over the past two seasons. No way the Wolves deal Rubio for such a detrimental contract.
As a Bulls fan, I don’t want Anthony. That would make no sense for us. The last thing we need is another aging ball hog, who’s past his prime, and is a ghost in every aspect of the game except scoring.
With Butler in his prime, they need a great big man, and someone that can shoot proficiently (who isn’t a ball hog or egomaniac) and stretch the floor. That guy certainly isn’t Melo.
With Melo, Butler, and Wade on the floor that would be a logistical nightmare.
Isola reports Melo won’t waive his no trade clause, Melo tells him in an interview that he hasn’t even thought about it and Isola doesn’t ask for clarification.
Did I miss something here?
Welcome to every rumor ever. Most of it is out of context or misleading assumptions to stir the pot so stuff actually does happen
Celtics have more than enough assets to attain Melo. They don’t really need him but he is still an all star caliber player. OKC would be a great fit but they have 0 cap space and little assets to get him. Toronto is another team that could use him at the 4.
I’ve been thinking Melo to Cleveland and Love to Boston is where we would end up.
Not sure Smart, Crowder and the Nets pick is doable or if Cleveland would trade Love at this point but…
Love in Boston is a dream for. Don’t know if the Cavs would want to mess with their core like that though. They are high on Love and rightfully should be. He’s been ballin out of his mind. Crowder, Smart, and nets pick would be more than enough and maybe even a little more than needed.
Love > Melo over the last 4 years, and Love is 28, while Melo is 32.
Melo’s True Shooting % last 4 years = 54%, and 75% of his shots are 2P. Given 100 shots, Melo would score 121 points.
Love’s True Shooting % last 4 years = 57% and 58% of his shots are 2P. Given 100 shots, Love would score 138 points.
However, if looking at this year in a vacuum. Melo is a better catch & shoot player than Love. 47% 2P 44% 3P versus 39% 2P and 41% 3P.
Melo holds on to the ball a full second (2.77) longer than Love (1.58) in comparison – Lebron and Kyrie are over 6 seconds per touch. Essentially, either Melo or Kyrie/LeBron would have to tweak their games touching the ball less. Is Melo capable of doing this outside of a Team USA platform? Would you rather have LeBron arguably the best player on the planet touch the ball less or Kyrie a top 5 PG touch the ball less? Kevin Love & Chris Bosh are both Alphas on a bad team, and Beta when there’s a real Alpha. Melo is Alpha 100%.
Outside of that… I don’t see the Celtics doing any trade that involves the Cavs while they are both in playoff contention.
I think the celts would make that trade. They aren’t going to pass on a third star out of fear.
I agree Cleveland might not but Lebron might prefer to have Melo to Love and he runs that team.
I don’t think comparing Love with Lebron and Irving to Melo with Rose is a fair comparison. Melo would be a better player if he was the third best player on the team.
I’d love it, NY would do it, Cleveland wouldn’t bite. Maybe if they don’t win this year.
LOL @ Love trade idea – if Cleveland makes another deal it will just be a back up PG
No way in hell Cavs trade Love
With their roster, it’s the Cavs vs. the West. Trading Love to the Celtics, even if they get Melo, closes the gap between the two teams.
In 15 seasons Anthony’s averaging just shy 25 PPG Now if that’s not being consistent, what is it? Has his teams ever been good? NO…. Melo, stay right where you are till the end of your contract then pack up and take the family to Disneyland. In my book, you did OK without a team backing you up most of the time……….
Exactly. Who’d he even play with? Either they weren’t in their prime or they weren’t superstar level.
A.I. at the end of his career albeit still a scoring machine.
Chauncey Billups towards the end, but he was actually pretty good still. Andre Miller has always been a serviceable PG but he was no superstar. JR was a knucklehead.
Kidd at the end of his career. Bibby at the end of his career. Rasheed at the very end. Amare at the end, Martin at the end.
.
Greetings etc.
