The power struggle in New York grows more hostile by the day but eventually one of either Phil Jackson or Carmelo Anthony will get their way. On Sunday, Anthony reiterated that he has no intention of waiving his no-trade clause and suggests that, if Jackson and the Knicks feel his time with the organization should be over, they should have a discussion about it.
Anthony is under contract through the 2018/19 season and can’t be moved without his permission.
The latest uptick in drama surrounding the pair revolves around a story recently published by Charley Rosen of FanRag. Rosen, a close associate of Jackson’s, wrote a scathing column of the team’s superstar.
What we want to know is what readers think of the developing, hostile situation. Should Anthony feel obligated to waive his no-trade clause if a deal would help the franchise? Is Jackson wildly out of line speaking through his supposed confidant or the media making too much of their affiliation to each other?
Weigh in below!
If Phil and Carmelo care about NY at all….they both should leave and take that guy with the pony tail with yall (jokem Noah)…!
Right… They can’t win with Melo, can’t imagine how they would do without him…
This is a Phil.Jackson problem that he has created. He was hired to clean up the knick mess, not create more of mess. If the job is to much or the game has passed him by he should step aside. Who the hell is Charlie Rosen to have so much clout???
I would agree that probably both Phil and Carmelo are past their sell date in NY. However, Phil should not have negotiated a no-trade clause if he thought the day would come that he would want to trade Carmelo.
It does seem that Carmelo’s insistence on the big deal is the 180 degree opposite of for example, Dirk Nowitzki’s flexibility in Dallas, trying to help them build a better team and not be hampered by a super max contract.
Carmelo seems to want to have his cake and eat it too. He sleeps in the bed he made, by demanding the trade to NY in the first place, which decimated the Knicks’ future draft picks and young prospects to build with. He made it even worse by demanding another big contract at a time when he should be already set for life if he has any kind of good financial advice (a big assumption, I know).
He appears to be very self-focused, and Phil seems disinterested in the job he took on, so perhaps the above comment is correct and they should both wave good-bye to the Garden.
If the Knicks don’t do something to move forward soon, Brooklyn will have righted their disaster and will take over the market a la the Clippers in L.A.
Agree with a lot of what you said. Phil has done a good job and my guess is Dolan told him he had to keep Melo when he took the job. Knicks have very manageable contracts and my guess is a trade is coming that won’t include Melo in spite of all of this drama.
Big difference between Nets and Knicks. Knicks actually own their picks going forward. Also, BK and Manhattan are not the same…Knicks will always be New York’s team.
You really think Phil’s additions have benefited this team?
I Think that Melo needs to come to terms with himself & understand he made the wrong decision to stay in NY and his career isnt benefiting from it. Phil Jackson def has the Power to remake the team from the “ground up” but its been to long since he has been in NY and done nothing and with Melo there would continue to go down the drain. Both should consider leaving but i feel Phil will be the last man standing
The trade kicker on top of the no trade clause, makes it impossible to trade him. There’s no title contender willing to take on that money. Melo is stuck and there’s nothing he can do but stick with the a sad team, with Kristaps the only bright spot on the team.
I love when I see people saying melo is greedy for taking a max contract and not giving the Knicks a discount. Why is he greedy for taking his market value?
Phil Jackson is the executive that has brought this team to its knees and he looks as if he is in another world… not only he brought players that should never play for the Knicks with Noah a shinning example but also started this feud with the star player!
What good could that be for a losing team that needs unity to overcome?
Is it so hard for him to see that this is not the way to run the team at this sensitive point.
Phil Jackson was a good player,a master coach but now looks like a walking disaster for this team as he is clearly past its prime.
Melo with all his ups and down is at least trying and regarding his contract why is it so bad for a player to get top $, isnt that what everyone is doing??
It’s best for both sides to move on, the Knicks finally control all there first round picks this team has mediocre with only one top 5 pick the this century, this team should tank for a year or 2, as for melo he’s still a star player but he’s a number 2 or 3 at this point of his career
The issue here is the knicks are just made up of offensive role players. The only 2 way players are lee Thomas kp and ko. They can’t hold back potent perimeter teams by themselves . Melo although a liability on D has had several awful games of late but the blame cannot be placed on him solely. Slow down the 3 and transition somehow and your back to the way you started the season perhaps. But no better than that. 1 or 2 injuries and the wheels fall off? That’s not depth. Noah contract way worse than Melos. This year and the next few.
Melo complains and cashes checks….Phil has done nothing….he drafted Porzingis but traded a top 10 pick for Bargiani….no playoff appearances….no primetim3 free agents….time to gut the team get what u can and start over….AGAIN!!!!…STUPID ASS DOLAN!!!!
Phil actually didn’t trade for Bargnani. That was part of the disaster that Phil inherited. Regarding picks, Phil has done a great job. The problem with this team is not Phil. It’s the lack of defense they play.
I can’t put all of the Knicks woes on Melo. Since Jackson took over as PBO, this team has gone from bad to worse. I question his front office acumen; especially with many of his free agent decisions, and lack of player development skills…HOF coach, but not an executive.
As for Melo, he does need to buy into playing defense and not holding the ball as long. But at 32 years old, he’s not going to change at this point in his career. If we can get some value in a trade for Melo I wouldn’t be against the deal. This is Porzingis’ team now. Let’s build around him. Side note: my second order of business is relegating Noah to the bench and starting O’Quinn from here on out. To hell with Noah’s contract. I want the guy on the floor that gives me the best chance to win and fight for boards aggressively.
Melo is a Clown
The problem is the Knicks can do very little about it.
I can’t hate on Phil. The Knicks have sucked for the past 15 years because all they did was trade away draft picks. Phil has not traded away picks, he has acquired them. As for Melo, he’s a good player who is overpaid because he only hurts the team on defense. in 2012, the Knicks were successful because they had leaders like Kidd. Phil needs to see if Chris Paul would come to NY. He is the type of player that we need alongside Melo. And he plays defense..
The reality is Melo needs to have the ball to be effective and there are teams out there who could use his scoring.
I think NYK should send Melo and D-Rose(and maybe a pick or two) to ORL for a package of Vucevic (or Biyombo), Elfrid Payton and Jeff Green.
NYK gets pieces for the future and ORL gets the offense it needs. I know it’s probably highly unlikely this’ll happen but it makes sense to me for both sides
Melo needs to go.
The team is trying to rebuild and Melo has blocked it for too long.
They have tried to build around him and it hasn’t worked. We can’t go forward and keep trying to find the perfect combination that allows the team to win with Melo as a core a player.
The arguments that Phil shouldn’t have signed Melo or that they should have signed him for less or without the NTC are hollow. In hindsight they probably should have let him go but I don’t think it’s responsible or would have been forgiven by the fans if they let him go for nothing.
The trade kicker is there and Melo needs to use it to limit the teams he is traded to instead of forcing a specific team with the full kicker.
Phil Jackson has done an excellent job of completely changing the teams dynamic and has conceded to Melos demands to bring in veteran players. It’s time to stop blaming him or anyone but Melo. A NTC is to preserve a players right to work where he wants but he is now holding the entire franchise hostage and is only insuring he gets to play on a terrible team where he is rightly blamed.
What? New York gave him an extension. Did melo force them to do that? Did he force them to give him a no trade clause? Stop with this nonsense. Melo is not the Knicks problem. The Knicks are the Knicks problem.
Until they stop throwing their own players under the bus in the media, and stop giving terrible contracts to guys like Joakim Noah, or stop hiring terrible coaches… they will never be a good team. And Melo was not involved in any of those decisions, so I don’t know what to tell you.
How does the fact they gave him an extension mean he isn’t the problem?
Are you saying they should have known he wasn’t going to improve?
Noah was given his contract because he was needed. His contract is in no way the problem with this team.
Throwing players under the bus? By saying they should play defense?
By not giving Isola quotes? Melo throws more people under the bus than anyone in management.
