JANUARY 30: The Grizzlies have officially re-signed Douglas to a 10-day deal, announcing in a press release that they’ve waived Williams to create a roster spot.
JANUARY 29: The Grizzlies are finalizing a deal to bring Toney Douglas back on a 10-day contract, tweets Michael Wallace of Grizzlies.com. The team waived the 30-year-old point guard on December 15 after a six-game stint.
Initially signed by the Grizzlies in early December via a hardship exception, Douglas will hit the ground running at least somewhat familiar with the systems in place in Memphis. He averaged 5.8 points per game during his first stint there and the club went 5-1.
The Grizzlies are expected to release Troy Williams to make room on their roster. After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Williams caught on with Memphis and saw action in 22 games. Though briefly featured heavily in early December — he played 30-plus minutes six times between November 26 and December 13 — the 22-year-old last took the court for the Grizzlies on December 18.
Great move by the grizzlies . TD was doing good when he was with the grizzlies first time around . 6’3 pg that can defend and shoot the 3 ball . They will need him come playoffs time honestly .
Sorry to see Williams go, but barring injuries he was only going to stay with the D League team. Toney Douglas proved his worth when he was with us before. Harrison is a promising player but he’s not who we need during a playoff run.
Troy Williams has the motor and drive to be a productive player in this league. Sorry to see him go. I’d rather them let Jarell go
Jarell is a big man and more potential down the road. Douglas is a way better back up than Harrison at this point.
Exactly totally agree Toney is the guy for back up point guard . Harrison not ready yet . Memphis going to be a scary team in the playoffs.
I’m surprised they let him go. Seems like a Fizdale type player. I could see someone picking him up. Everyone needs wings, and he has a high motor. Good for Toney Douglas to get rostered, and takes away an option from the Cavs.
Can the Grizzlies turn around and sign Toney Douglas to a second 10-day contract when this one expires? (Since the contract in December was due to all the injuries and used the hardship exception.)
Yes but prob will sign him for rest of season
I really thought Troy Williams would be a strong fit for Grizzly future. I was tracking his stats in the pre season as well as the regular season. He had great moves, for a rookie, and had a strong future with the team. Fits would often say they saw something in him and that is why they kept him and let their high draft choice go.
Grizzlies better lock themselves in and sign Toney Douglas for the rest of the season before another team steal him from the grizzlies . They will need Toney Douglas coming playoffs especially !
