Deron Williams has cleared waivers and he will sign with the Cavaliers, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Shams Charania of The Vertical tweets that the signing is expected to be completed on Monday.
The agreement is for the remainder of the season and it will cost Cleveland $908,431 this season with $259,526 of that figure being Williams’ salary and remaining cost being luxury tax payments, Bobby Marks of The Vertical tweets. The move will bring the Cavs payroll to slightly over $126.9MM, which is the highest is league history.
Dallas was looking to trade Williams at the deadline, but no deal materialized. Shortly after the deadline, it was reported that the Mavs were working on a buyout agreement with Williams and his preferred destination was Cleveland.
LeBron James has been adamant about the team adding a playmaker to help take the burden off of him and the addition of Williams should help with that issue. The 32-year-old can play the traditional point guard role for the Cavs when Kyrie Irving and James sit, but he’s also comfortable playing off the ball, so he should see regular minutes alongside Irving and James as well.
Williams is averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 assists per game this season. He has a 53.2 true shooting percentage and he’s sporting a 15.3 player efficiency rating.
A little surprising that no one tried to block this just to be sociable.
This isn’t 2k. One team cant block a free agent signing.
Pretty sure he was saying that he was suprised no one claimed him on waivers.
Yeah but inorder to claim him you have to be willing to pay the rest of his contract, have a roster space and cap room. Why bother if you don’t intend on using him?
He was talking about it being surprising that a team didn’t claim D Will from waivers after he was released, which would’ve blocked this move from happening.
As for Lefty_Orioles, D Will was interested in going to the Cavaliers, so it’s likely that his agent put it out there or would’ve informed the team that D Will wouldn’t play for any team that claimed him (except the Cavs) and/or the agent wouldn’t do any work with that team in the future.
It was about the waiver process.
However, I guess being a pain and trying to block could have caused some friction.
why would they? only four teams had the cap space, and none are real contenders anyways.
Looks like LBJ got his playmaker. No more excuses now!
Is bogut gonna follow to join
Andrew Bogut and Terrence Jones to follow!
Jones is not coming to Cavs. He is going to sign with a team where he can be a consistent starter for the rest of the year or see SIGNIFICANT PLAYING TIME because he is auditioning for his contract next year. He is not concerned with the playoffs. He was asked to be released by the Pelicans in order to find a team that can offer more PT. That is not the Cavs. Bogut though there is a legitimate shot once the buyout is resolved
Jones will prob get claimed won’t he?
People forgetting Larry Sanders
according to reports Larry was awful in work outs. just back to smoking weed Larry haha
Jazz should have claimed him!
Idc who gets bogut just not the Warriors that’s the only team he would significantly help
he can’t go to the warriors
except that he can… perhaps you missed the report last week that stated that the NBA ruled that because he was traded twice, he is able to sign with the Warriors, but not the Mavs
That’ was a gift. Wonder if they’ll get Jones or Sullinger. Bogut really does not offer much since they’ll be playing a faster pace smaller ball anyway.
CLEvsWORLD… Warriors can sign bogut. That rule only prevents the LAST team who had traded him. So Dallas is the only team who can’t sign bogut
There were no takers on the waiver wire for Williams and what’s left of his $9 million contract, though it is believed Williams’ powerful agent, Jeff Schwartz, warned interested parties not to claim his client — who wanted to join the Cavs.
I salivate at the idea of the Cavs matching the Warriors with a small lineup like:
D. Williams or Irving @ PG
Irving or JR Smith @ SG
Kover @ SF
Lebron @ PF
and either Love/Thompson/Frye @ C
It’s an intriguing mix. You have 3 legit ball handlers and shooters everywhere especially with Love or Frye at C.
