DeMarcus Cousins plans to sign an extension with the Kings this summer, he said on an interview with ESPN’s SportsCenter that was relayed by the network’s Ramona Shelburne. Cousins indicates he’s happy in Sacramento and would like to spend his entire career there, Shelburne continues.
Cousins will be eligible in July to sign a five-year extension worth well over $200MM. He’s making $16,957,900 this season and $18,063,850 next season in the final year of his current deal.
A report surfaced last month that Kings management would try to lock up Cousins when the new designated player extension becomes available after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement goes into effect in July. With Cousins now on board to sign that extension, the possibility of the big man getting traded before this month’s deadline seems even more remote.
Cousins has in the past been critical of Kings management but appears to believe they will make the necessary moves to turn the franchise into a contender. GM Vlade Divac has taken steps recently to convince Cousins that he wants him to remain the franchise player for years to come.
Cousins is optimistic about the team’s playoff chances despite the season-ending injury to second-leading scorer Rudy Gay last month.
“I think we’re on the right path this season,” Cousins said. “We’re playing the best basketball of the season so far. Our team is extremely confident.”
He’s averaging 27.8 PPG and 4.8 APG — both career highs — along with 10.6 rebounds this season.
With the new player designated clause we won’t see many super stars leave they’re team because of the money, money over winning, wonder who will be the first player to leave to win
that is A LOT of money
Funny how when Lebron leaves to win he gets critisized but when cousins or Melo doesn’t leave they also get critisized
With Lebron it was more about the hour long tv show, that was unnecessary. I dont care how much money he funded the boys and girls club, that show was not needed. A whole hour to announce where he was signing.
The hour long tv show that raised over a million dollars for charity. What a monster Lebron is giving money to charity.
blah blah blah who cares, the show was unnecessary.
Championship parades are unnecessary, championship rings are unnecessary, and raising championship banners are unnecessary. Calling something unnecessary is the laziest argument anybody can come up with.
People seem to ignore that when Lebron left a playoff team and blame the descion as terrible as that was. Boogie is in an organization that hasn’t made the playoffs in ten years. Melo in a 3 year drought and the knicks don’t look close to playoffs. That’s why people want them to leave their teams
LeBron also took a significant pay cut to win, I don’t want to hear boogie complaining why his team sucks, kings have the worst front office in the game 10 lottery picks the last couple of years only one good player, makes the Knicks front office look like Jesus
Dude if they bring back Cousins, they know how great the dude is and will do what is necessary to start getting him in the playoffs. Divac won’t move Cousins because talent like Cousins comes around once every 10 years, the dude is huge and a stretch 5 who can post, shoot, bring the ball up court and make plays, and rebound and play defense. If any coach can get the best out of Cousins is Joerger, we have heard no issues with Cousins and him and the Kings have been playing good basketball. Not every player wants to jump ship to another team, Cousins wants to retire and be remembered as a King.
This guy is a absolute beast. If they can build s good team around him and keep him happy it’ll be a good relationship. I think it’s smart for both parties to sign him to an extension. Even if they end up trading him in a few years.
I hope he signs the extension and everyone can shut up about him. It is annoying to hear the same thing about something that isn’t going to happen.
Except that with the drama surrounding the kings and cousins, the only reason he changed his tune is the new CBA. Cousins wanted out and bad, until he found out how much more $$ he got to stay.
Then it ought to shut him up for the first few years. Lol.
Sacramento is lucky.
This is so stupid, saw on ESPN just now he said “I want my legacy to end in SAC” uh boogie, sorry to be the one to tell you but YOU HAVE NO LEGACY! The only thing your known for is getting technical fouls and ejected from more games then any current NBA player. If you WANT a legacy leave for LA. Magic is going to rid Lakers of Mitch and Jim Buss and build this team back to greatness. Or hell leave for almost anywhere else because you have never even sniffed the playoffs in your entire career. Do you not care about that? Guess not, its pretty sad be cause he’s easily the best big man in the league right now (A.Davis and big KAT are on his heels though) Cmon boogie PLEASE LEAVE!
You are tripping, maybe rewarding Sacramento for being loyal to him is a reason he wants to stay and lead them back to prominence. They finally got him a coach he can work with in Joerger and they are like 2-3 games from the 8th spot, obviously they are not contenders but they have beat some really good teams this season. I mean its sad Gay is probably not coming back but they can get it right this summer and build him a team he can compete with, not every player wants to gang up with stars to win rings, Lebron does it because he wants to be better then Jordan and please everyone by winning more rings so he could be looked at as the GOAT. Cousins wants to be himself and do what his heart tells him, one chip in Sacramento would make him a hall of famer instantly without question.
ik absolutely ridiculous, cousins needs to get the hell out of there
Cousins ain’t going nowhere fam.
I think due to his injury, Gay may end up opting in and kind of proving himself again to get a big contract. But if it was really basketball hell like he said, then maybe he’d risk leaving this summer coming off a major injury.
So everyone complaining about money, you can’t complain about super teams than. offering stars this money to stay with the team that drafted him will actually help build parity in the nba
