Knicks team president Phil Jackson appears to be pressuring Carmelo Anthony to waive his no-trade clause, but the public campaign is making the 9-time All-Star’s desire to stay with New York even stronger, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reports. “[Jackson]’s underestimating ‘Melo’s willingness to stay,” a source told Wojnarowski.
Anthony has privately told some of his teammates that he won’t let Jackson run him out of town, according to Wojnarowski. The scribe adds that the Knicks have contacted the Clippers, Celtics, and Cavs about an Anthony deal, but the teams have put together underwhelming proposals that include only role players. Anthony has privately indicated an interest in those three teams, but the Knicks haven’t found a package they are willing to accept.
Boston hasn’t shown much interest in Anthony. The franchise is much more enamored with Jimmy Butler and Paul George since they are both younger and their games are more well-rounded, Wojnarowski adds.
The Knicks may search for trades outside those three teams and attempt to persuade Anthony to waive his no-trade clause to go to another team, though New York hasn’t yet begun that process. Wojnarowski adds that if Jackson had employed more transparent approach, Anthony would have been more open to finding an agreeable solution, which may have included agreeing to a trade. However, Jackson’s antics have severely damaged the relationship and it may be beyond repair.
The Knicks are only being offered role players because that’s essentially what Carmelo is. He can’t carry a team, make his team mates better or play defense.
Knicks get
Iman Shumpert
Channing Frye
DeAndre Liggins
Jordan McRae
2021 1st
Cavs get
Carmelo Anthony
That’s the deal the knicks will get desperate enough to accept,Mark my words!
Then the Knicks waive 3 of their own players to make the roster space for 2 role players and 2 d leaguers?
Cavs won’t make that deal. Frye is a key rotation guy, Shumpert is having a great year and is best perimeter defensive guy. Only way Anthony comes to Cavs is if a 3rd team is involved or he gets bought out….which won’t happen
That’s not enough money coming back to the Knicks, Melo has a bonus kick in to add another $5m if traded
Which makes Melo un-tradable.
Melo isn’t going to the cavs at this point. A lot of people are just looking at what melo does on offense and not looking at how his game would transition to Cleveland. Melo has never been a third option in his career and at this point that’s exactly what he would be behind Lebron, and Kyrie. That’s if he’s no the 4th option behind Love. The cavs are trying to win a championship and melo doesn’t help them do that. Right now the cavs are week on defense and rebounding. Melo doesn’t help either of those needs in fact he makes them worse.
What a joke. Melo has a trade kicker and was given the no trade so he could have some control over where he’s going and get a big raise if things didn’t work out in NY. After years of destroying the team from within he still won’t agree to go.
Guess what. It isn’t working out because no one can carry that giant anchor across the finish line. Even Lebron doesn’t want him.
He’s going to end up in the dictionary for both cancer and coach killer and will probably be proud since it will be his only achievement in the NBA.
Pretending that some level of butt kissing by Jackson would have made Anthony be nice and agree to a big pay raise and a trade to the team of his choosing is a joke.
If I was Jackson I would step down into the coaching job and bench Melo until he agrees to play defense and can remember what he’s supposed to do on the floor. Then I would suspend him for the inevitable self pity party with Bondi and the Isoatolah.
I’m so sick of Melo and his media posse trying to force better men out of town so he can rule his little pond of sewage and make sure the fans have nothing to root for except his stats. No wonder George Karl came out and told it like it was. That must have felt so good.
Two egomaniacs. One ugly team. As long as James, the lucky sperm, Dolan is in charge, the Garden will never be the basketball Mecca again.
There is no way I blame Jackson when he has to try to win with Melo. It just isn’t possible. Not for anyone.
Even Dolan is better than Melo. He’s at least stayed out of it.
I do blame Jackson as a Knicks fan. Noah? Lee? Wasted money. Remove those contacts and you have Melo, KP and two max contracts (provided they key Rose walk) going into next year.
And let’s not kid ourselves, Melo was never a defensive player to begin with. Pure offense with some rebounding. He’s putting up decent numbers this year, so I’m not sure where the hate is coming from. He wants to stay and Jackson is playing the media. I say Phil goes before Melo does.
Noah and Lee are both fine and play defense, care about winning and care about their team mates. Noah was also needed for a young team poisoned by Anthony.
Melo doesn’t care or do any of those things.
Free agents will not sign to play with Melo because they know better. Stop with this nonsense about signing free agents it’s never happened with him and it never will.
The hate come because he only cares about ruining the team.
Decent numbers isn’t how you describe a player whose team is outscored every time he’s on the floor. It’s about winning not empty stats in a loss.
It’s amazing what phil jackson sheeple allow themselves to believe
It’s amazing how little Melo fans know about basketball. Does he pay you to act like a fool or do you really think he has anything in common with winning basketball?
That doesn’t matter because Phil Jackson is the one who agreed to give him a large contract and no trade clause. Melo hasn’t changed he’s the same non-defense playing guy he was 8 years ago.
It’s not his fault Phil gifted him so much leverage. All Melo is doing is using the contractual rights he was given.
It doesn’t matter how little melo fans know about basketball because Phil signed Melo and trusted that he would accept a trade if it didn’t work out?
I’ll assume you were responding to something other than the post you hit reply to but in what universe is it OK to be a cancer just because someone gave you an awesome contract and some control over your destiny?
Was Phil supposed to know that not only was melo to lazy to play defense but that he would rather be the most hated person in town and the reason the team is bad? That he would rather destroy the careers of his team mates than to accept a 10% raise and go to a winning team?
Sometimes people are simply more pathetic than any reasonable person can expect. When they also become self destructive it can catch any reasonable person by surprise.
In hindsight I agree. It was a mistake to resign him and trust him in any way. I wouldn’t bet Phil wanted to resign him and people like you would have screamed bloody murder if they had but believe it or not any team is probably better with no one than with Melo.
I do not consider it a terrible crime of judgement to have decided to resign him at that point in time and there is no way he should lose his job for it.
It isn’t Melo’s fault the knicks agreed to give him the no trade clause when he demanded it to resign but the crime isn’t giving out the no trade clause. The crime is refusing to be a team player, causing problems in the media and clubhouse and being a total loser on the floor. Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone takes pride in being a loser and making everyone around them suffer.
Melo is causing problems in the media? Wow…all the media stuff is phil
Were you born yesterday or did you just start following the team yesterday?
Phil sent out one tweet yesterday but Isola and Bondi have been regurgitating Melos crap for a month.
Phil has been talking sh%# for 2 years+.
Phil is the one that gave him the contract. Melo didn’t go to his office and demand he do it or he’d kidnap Jeanie!
This falls in Melos lap, he being paid big bucks and if he wants to stay should play on both ends of the court, I am a Laker fan and know Phil is doing his job but I lobbied hard against Melo coming here, knowing his habits as I watched him depart a game Vs Lakers down by 12 with a few minutes to go he went to the locker room. He quit on his team, the Nuggets. Best solution is off season trade time to think about a rebuild, as a native NYer it’s embarrassing to see this soap opera.
As a Bulls fans, give me those 2 Nets picks and Brown for Butler. along with whatever else is needed to have the salaries match. It’s a win-win for both teams. Boston needs premier talent now, before the rest of their roster starts to age.
so you want the #3 pick in 2016, the #1 Pick in 2017 and the # 2-5 pick in 2018 for Butler. You sure you don’t want IT and Horford and Bradley too?
Good for Melo. Phil Jackson is a clown. As I said before, I wish Melo wouldn’t be so professional, and would call phil out, but hopefully others will continue to do it for him
Professional?
He’s a professional loser and the fact he’s afraid to say anything to Phil is only topped by the fact that he has his little girl lap dogs bash him incessantly.
Phil is a clown. He is purposely trying soo hard to make Melo a scapegoat, and it’s totally disgusting. He’s trying really hard to take attention away from how terrible of an executive that he is, and hiding from the media, while Carmelo Anthony has to face criticisms on a nightly basis, b/c he doesnt have the ability to avoid the media, as a player. And he also has to hear it from the crowd, whos perceptions are what they are b/c they buy into Phil’s garbage. Meanwhile, Phil has successfully lowered Melo’s trade value by openly criticizing him. Melo has handled this extremely professionally, and I don’t think he needs to be so professional about it. I personally wish he’d call Phil out. That’s probably not going to happen though, so hopefully others continue to do it for him…
It’s a joke that this dude refuses to let the coach that was hired, coach the team. There is no way Hornacek wants to play this way. It makes no sense, and it’s hurting the development of Porzongis, in my opinion. But Phil is living 20 years in the past, and refuses to evolve with the game. Dude is so smug, has such a massive ego, that he wants to ignore everyone else, essentially saying he is smarter than everyone else in the industry, and also trying to coach the team without coaching the team, which by the way, emasculates Hornacek. What a joke. I feel so bad for Carmelo Anthony. Ya, he is getting paid, but he is being massively disrespected, and it’s just sad. I hope Dolan would wake up and get rid of Phil, and just eat that money, but he himself needs Phil to be his scapegoat. That’s a dysfunctional organization as there is
Are you so clueless that you can’t see what a joke Melo is and always has been?
You want to blame Phil Jackson because Melo is so self centered he makes every team worse and he can barely get though a single game where the team scores more than the other team while he’s on the floor.
The team is dysfunctional because Melo is dysfunctional.
Even Melo wouldn’t be so weak to hand out the excuses you make up.
You’re really suggesting it’s zero percent phil’s fault?
Absolutely, Phil gave Melo everything he wanted in the contract and went out and got a bunch of vets instead of rebuilding around Porzingis. Is he supposed to get out on the floor and play defense for Melo?
You are truly amazing. You and Skip Bayless would make a great couple. You should get an even bigger contract than him to be on that ridiculous show. Then it would be a show of who can top the other and say the more ridiculous things
Wow you really hate Melo. Did he steal your dog?
Yep. The team is disfunctional because of Carmelo. The same Carmelo with whom the rest of the team wants to play with and have openly admitted (Porzingis included) that they want to see him stay. In no way is the problem a certain HOF coach wannabe executive who tore apart a disfunctional albeit a competitive team to tank hard (thankfully he has fallen to #4 to get Porzingis, otherwise Okafor would be the Knick), has made headlines for his (irrelevant) remarks only to then hide from the media and let others clean after him and is forcing his people onto the players despite it being known that the players want nothing to do with them (I mean seriously, Rambis shouldn’t have anything to do with coaching again).
Maybe Melo should waive his no-trade clause. To get away from the mess Phil’s creating because at this rate, the Nets will be a good team way before the Knicks will.
The rest of the team supports him because he makes you suffer if you don’t and has had enough control to get people benched or off the team in the past.
Tore apart the team? You mean that championship contending Knicks team he took over? LOL
Phil wants to be in the HOF and will get there as one of the biggest winners in the history of sports.
Melo on the other hand will be elected to the American Cancer Society HOF as the basketball player who most resembles a life threatening tumor. He’s been despised by every coach and most of the players he’s ever spent time with and he doesn’t know anything about winning.
The rest of the team, who mostly signed as FAs thinking they’d play with Melo and KP and at least try to compete. Even Porzingis admitted pretty easily that it’d be harder for him to play as the best player seeing as all the other teams would have to do is focus on him.
And tearing apart the team? Tyson Chandler (along with Raymond Felton) was sent to the Mavericks for Calderon and Larkin. While the former was an important part in a Mavericks team competing quite high until they ruined it with Rondo, Larkin has since become a Euroleague player and Calderon has thankfully been accepted by the Lakers. JR Smith and Iman Shumpert, both of whom are important parts of Cleveland, have been sent there for Lance Thomas, who seems to have forgotten how to play basketball ever since he got a new contract and a few scrubs, which were waived instantly. What else, Stoudemire? How fit has he been the last few seasons?
And if you’re talking Phil and HOF, he’ll rightfully go there. As a COACH. Nobody can’t deny his rings as a COACH. However if he wants to do in NY what he’s actually trying to do, first of all he might need to fire Hornacek and become the team’s coach himself. But wait, he’s not ready to do that, is he?
Melo’s career speaks for itself. He’s a career elite scorer, who could’ve done a few things differently but is almost a certainty for HOF. With the new CBA being as it is, the league will be littered with “Melo-type moneygrabbers”. And that’s ok. Unless you want to see superteams who will dominate and break records. I sure as hell don’t.
Melo is a business man. The man doesn’t care about winning. He cares about lifestyle and brand. He said it during the olympics that he wouldn’t consider his career a failure if he didn’t win a championship . Anywhere he goes he won’t be option 1 and it will affect his brand . Therefore stay in ny , be option 1 , take care of your brand and make money
If he stays he needs to be taken out of the starting line up. He can’t be allowed to screw it up for everyone else any longer.
It’s so obvious that this team shouldn’t be playing multiple bigs lineups, and yet they continue to b/c Phil won’t let Hornacek coach the team. There is no space on the floor with those bigs clogging the lanes, and it’s hurting Rose, Melo, and Porzingis. And that was obvious before the season started, and continhe’s to be obvious every single game.
Actually it’s because Melo is too much of a baby to play PF, Block out or rebound so they have to have someone else in the game to do half of his job.
Phil jackson won’t let Hornacek play Melo at 4 and Porzingis at 5. He wants Porzingis at 4, and Noah, O’Quinn, or Hernangomez next to him. He even wants to see Kuzmaniskas at the 3 next to 2 of those bigs…Phil Jackson has no idea what year it is
Wrong or just completely full of it. Phil wants Melo at the 4 but he refuses and will not rebound anyway.
He signed Noah because Porzingis isn’t ready to be a big rebounder and is better in the stretch 4 position until he gets stronger. Phil was accepting Melo’s limitation as a rebounder and a defender by getting him someone to do his dirty work.
Melo’s rebouding numbers are down this year with the multiple bigs lineups…but he was averaging 8 a game for a couple of years in a row. You don’t know what you’re saying
He’s averaged 8 or more rebounds a year once in his far too long career. 8.1 in 2012. Is Hernangomez really that much better at rebounding than Melo or does he just care?
You might try looking at stats before opening your mouth.
He averaged between 6.5 and 8 for the last few years. That’s really good out of the 3 spot. Probably improves at the 4. You’re just a hater
At least you toned it down to really good from excellent. Glad to see you’re trying to keep a handle on reality.
I still don’t agree. As one of the biggest, slowest and strongest “Small Forwards” in the league he should do better. Thank god he isn’t playing power forward where he’d get beaten into the ground every game.
ManBearPig618 what are you thinking…..why don’t we throw in Thomas too.?
Sigh. The day when Phil and his “posse” leave NY can’t get here too soon. Too bad he and Jeanie split because it sort of eliminates him from being a candidate to go and ruin the Lakers instead.
As a Knicks fan I am so tired of this loser’s mentality with the organization. I would like to see Phil, Melo and half this team leave and be bad but respected over this quick fix crap they pull every year. (Insert sad emoji here)
A simple case of addition by subtraction. Take a top 10 protected 2nd rounder if they take on the salary.
The Celtics have the #1 draft pick next year. That sounds like a slam dunk to me.
Straight up trade!
As a Celtics fan i dont want melo or butler neither make them a champion imo, keep the picks and continue to build!
Jackson doesn’t have the skill set to be a GM that builds even a good team, let alone a contender.
That said, his “bad” FA signings have been overplayed. He’s had more good than bad, and few GMs can say that. Noah and Thomas are horrible contracts. But, in today’s market (based on last off season), Lee’s contract is a good one. Jennings was a steal. Kuz also. In his first year, both of his long term contracts, Lopez and K.O., turned out to both be good contracts. He made some idiotic trades to start his tenure here (Chandler, most notably, then some followup giving aways of future 2nd rounders and then Shumpert/Smith), but hasn’t made a stupid trade since. He inherited a team with one draft pick (2015 1st rounder) in his first 3 years on job. He hit with it (Porzingis) and then (in the same draft) picked up Grant (for Hardaway after a horrific season) and Hernangomez (for a couple of future 2nd rounders). The value created by Lopez’ contract and Grant allowed the Rose trade, which, IMO, was a risk worth taking with no long term commitment. Yes, that trade of Lopez led to the ill-advised signing of Noah, but the Rose trade itself wasn’t a bad move. He also picked up Holiday in that trade (replacing Grant among the younger core on the roster).
Yes, I want him out too, but if you think his tenure here has done any permanent damage to the franchise, you couldn’t be more wrong. The next GM will have all his 1st round picks, and a core of young players on favorable contracts.
He doesn’t have the skill set?
What do you base that on?
Knicks are five years away from competing seriously, nobharm in that as Cavs will still run the East but in five years they’d be ripe for picking. Just like Warriors on the Left coast if you start to structure around picks. You’ll be fine just stop the silly free agent signings they’re not the answer. No one has mentioned the coach he’s doing an ok job but isn’t holding Melo accountable you win with defense it used to be a signature of the Knicks
