The Warriors are expected to sign Jose Calderon following Briante Weber‘s release, Anthony Slater of San Jose Mercury News reports (Twitter link). Coach Steve Kerr discussed the prospect of signing Calderon at Saturday’s postgame press conference.
“It’ll be a point guard,” Kerr told San Jose Mercury News. “We think we have something in place, but it’s not finalized. Got to wait until it’s official.”
Earlier today, Marc Stein of ESPN reported the Lakers’ intent to buy out Calderon’s contract. While the Rockets and Warriors emerged as early favorites to sign the 12th-year veteran, Golden State created a roster vacancy by releasing Weber. Calderon is in the final season of a four-year, $29MM contract.
Weber received two minutes of playing time in Saturday’s match-up with Brooklyn. The 24-year-old played sparingly with Golden State, scoring eight points over six games. Per Slater, the Hornets are a likely landing spot for Weber (Twitter link).
Eh idk about this move. Weber is known for his defense and so far he shows to be an efficient high-energy defender with speed. He’s a better choice as a 3rd-string PG.
He’s also much younger and seems to get along very well with the club already.
This move is huge. Release the D-League guy and pick up a veteran who has started most of his career on great teams. Fantastic pick up for the playoff run. He can hold his own on defense and is smart and can shoot. Unbelievable good fortune.
What!? Calderon CANNOT hold his own on defense! Has never been a strong defender and is now older and slower.
I guess you’re right. But I know he was never a strong Defender that’s for sure. But I hope he plays well in the team defense scheme. I don’t think he’ll get exposed and posted up by stronger guards and stuff like that….”oh look Calderon’s on the floor, let’s go at him,” every time kind of thing.
I agree with the last part. The Warriors are often able to hide Steph on defense, hiding Calderon shouldn’t be that big of a problem.
Gary, what do you mean, “started most of his career on great teams?” He has only played in the playoffs three times in his career…
Without looking it up I know we played with the Raptors and they were a top-four team in the East for a couple of years. If I remember correctly.
Plus not to mention he is one of the best 3 point shooters if I am remembering correctly. So the GS is a perfect spot for him. He just won’t get as many minutes as he normally does but I bet he is ok with that if it means he can possibly win a championship
Always liked Calderon, but he’s old at this point, and doesn’t fit this roster. This move makes no sense, in my opinion
