3:04pm: A source tells Marc Berman of The New York Post (Twitter link) that the Wolves got “extra concerned” that they wouldn’t be able to re-sign Rose this summer, and didn’t want to acquire him as a rental.
2:40pm: The Timberwolves walked away from trade negotiations involving Ricky Rubio and Derrick Rose, Marc Stein of ESPN reports. The Knicks made a final push for a Derrick Rose-for-Ricky Rubio trade with no additional pieces, but Minnesota balked. (Twitter links).
Earlier today, the Knicks pushed Minnesota to include additional trade pieces along with Rubio. Apparently unable to receive other assets (New York was said to be interested in Nemanja Bjelica), the Knicks made a final push at a straight-up trade offer.
Ian Begley of ESPN corroborated Stein’s report, claiming the Knicks’ willingness to lower their demands came too late in negotiations. Phil Jackson had been looking for draft picks in trade talks with other teams, which may have been the sticking point with Scott Layden of the Timberwolves.
Barring a buyout, Derrick Rose appears set to finish the season in New York before testing the free agent market. Ricky Rubio, who remains ahead of Tyus Jones and Kris Dunn on Minnesota’s depth chart, is under contract through 2018/19.
Smart
By who?
Minnesota
nah, if they wanted to lock up Rose longterm, shows how stupid they are
Exactly. Trading Rubio for Rose was a stupid idea in the first place. They were smart to walk away.
trade would’ve opened up more cap money for free agents next year.
Feel like Knicks should try and buyout Rose. Tanking seems like the only option left to get a good pg in the draft. There aren’t any good ones in free agency
you know what helps tanking? Giving Rose 15+ shot attempts per game lmao
Rotfl
Man the Knicks sure do overvalue their players.
…so the Knicks did nothing.
Sheeeeesh.
Thibs surely showing his influence here. Why try to lock up Rose for a long time when they have Dunn…unless they’ve already soured on him. Resigning Rose would’ve thrown then into a scramble when KAT needs an extension (as well as pending raises/extensions for Wiggins and Lavine) and when Dunn needed more minutes to develop.
Most intelligent thing I’ve heard throughout the entire Rubio for Rose shenanigans.
Smart rose is washed up
Another feeble performance by Jackson in the trade market.
Minn saw a win-win scenario and a straight up fair proposal that worked for both teams, on a bunch of fronts. Anyway, it deserved a yes-no answer. Not Phil’s ego trying to redeem him for past give away deals. It wasn’t too late when he came back (silly statement). Minn got sick of dealing with that pompous — and went out for some drinks.
Rose is too injury prone. He also sat for a log time after his physicians gave him the A-OK. He’s injury shy. You need a guy that doesn’t take his foot off the pedal. He’s not that guy anymore. This would have been a win for the Knicks and a big loss to the Wolves. I think the Wolves have enough space to get a star combo guard like Jimmy Butler. Pay off some of those guys sitting behind the bench in suits for cap space and make a deal for Butler. Keep Rubio and give them Tyus and Dunn and Bjelica. and dangle Shabazz. He’s a scoring machine, but he gets called for too many charges. He’s like a one-way bull.
Rose doesn’t profile as a buyout candidate. Of course, he’ll get bought out in an instant if he eats some real money (but that’s unlikely). His Bird rights may have some value. His offense and pedigree mean someone will likely look to add him at a price point north of the mid-level.
Thibs initiated this trade, and he’s stubborn, so I can see him adding Rose (as a bridge to Dunn), and then trading Rubio, in the off season (the Knicks needn’t be involved).
