Aaron McMann of MLive.com discussed Stan Van Gundy‘s role with the Pistons in a recent column, questioning whether the veteran coach has lost the clubhouse. Per McMann, Van Gundy opted against addressing the team following Friday’s blowout loss to the Magic. What’s more, when Van Gundy was asked whether his players had ‘given up’, Stan replied “I don’t know, you’d have to ask them.”
McMann continued, noting “Players have appeared unresponsive to Van Gundy of late, from Stanley Johnson walking away from his coach during a game last week against Phoenix to visible sparring with players.”
While the Pistons have dropped seven of their last 10, they remain in contention for the eighth seed, trailing Miami by 1.5 games. Van Gundy, who is also the president of basketball operations in Detroit, took accountability for the team’s struggles in a recent presser.
“I think it’s pretty clear from these six games that I’m not finding the answers and not doing a very good job, so it starts with me. I’m the person in charge,” Van Gundy told Keith Langlois of Pistons.com. “I selected everybody in that locker room. I’m the one who wanted them in there. I decide who plays. I put lineups out there. I decide on defensive coverages. I call plays. So it’s all on me.”
Never knew why the Pistons would hire him in the first place. Time to move on….and fast.
I like your idea but who do we pick up in my opinion we should have traded for PG13.. we don’t even know if KCP is going to resign with us and why do you want to pay him all that money in the first place and I think it’s really time for Reggie to go. ..I wish we didn’t get him in the first place. He a score first pg who can’t score and you can’t blame his injury

Orlando 2.0
Isn’t this the same thing that has always happened when SVG coaches? I don’t know what it is but he’s clearly not good at the coaching part.
The Pistons biggest problem is Andre Drummond. They should never have signed him to a long term contract. He is too inconsistent to be a big time star. As for SVG, I like him, he is honest and forth right…but he doesn’t have the players to win in this league. KCP is another questionable star…just too inconsistent…
The problem with the Pistons is they have no identity, Reggie Jackson was never a starting point guard. On top of that they dont even play Henry Ellenson who can be a Kevin Love with better handle and they don’t play him why? Trade Reggie,Tobias, Johnson, and a pick for George, re-sign Pope.
I understand trying to get something for George, but that is a terrible offer. Besides the fact that’s an in-division trade (so it makes it unlikely, why would the Pacers want to face George more times then they could if they traded him outside the division or conference), the haul itself isn’t that great. A late lottery pick and an interesting but still developing player with potential attitude issues (Johnson doesn’t nearly have the years or respect to just walk away from his coach, he hasn’t proven anything yet) isn’t enough. As you stated, Reggie isn’t even a starting point guard so he’s an overpriced backup and Tobias Harris isn’t anything special either, he’s essentially Rudy Gay 2.0.
I have no insider knowledge. But his demise with Detroit resembles his tenure elsewhere.
The accusations against SVG have always been that, despite his basketball mind, his relationships with players’ deteriorates because he is hypercritical and short with praise
When you only cut people down and don’t build them back up, they eventually figure out that they get the same amount of criticism regardless whether they try hard or try only a little.
You also don’t know what to focus on fixing with a coach like that, because everything is always messed up to them.
