The Celtics had been in the running to sign veteran center Andrew Bogut, but with the former No. 1 pick opting to sign instead with the rival Cavaliers, Boston doesn’t exactly have a Plan B in place, writes Mark Murphy of The Boston Herald.
A source tells Murphy that, while the two sides were reportedly in touch, Terrence Jones doesn’t appear to be a target for the Celtics. However, team management hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a reunion with Jared Sullinger “somewhere down the line if it is needed.” As Murphy suggests, Sullinger has battled conditioning and health issues, and he hasn’t been himself this season, but the Ohio State product – who turns 25 this Saturday – has made the Celtics a better rebounding team in the past.
Here’s more from out of Boston:
- Although the Celtics haven’t closed the door on re-adding Sullinger, a reunion is “highly unlikely,” says A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com.
- A source tells Murphy that the Celtics may simply decide to rely on in-house options as they try to improve their rebounding, though they’ll keep an eye out for potential upgrades. “There’s nothing imminent; (the Celtics) will continue looking and see what happens,” the source said. Chris Mannix of The Vertical also hears that the C’s are likely to stand pat with their current roster.
- According to a separate source, the Celtics had internally debated the value Bogut would have in the lineup, Murphy writes. Due to concerns about Bogut’s health and uncertainty about whose minutes he would take, members of the Celtics had “mixed reviews” on whether or not the veteran center would be a good addition, Murphy’s source said.
Sign Mamadou N’Diaye he is a freaking monster. He is 7’6 and can help with rebounds for sure. He might not be the most athletic player or a gifted scorer but if your asking for someone to get rebounds this guy can do it for sure. And he won’t cost a lot either and he will have a good work within because he knows he has to prove his value and will work hard every practice and game to get better. Did I mention that he is 7’6.
Oh man I could already see it, Lebron running the Celtics off the court with a 7’6 lumbering up and down the court having to come out and guard Love and Frye. The Celtics are better off just playing Amir johnson
N’Diaye was a cool story in college but he isn’t an NBA player by any stretch of the imagination.
I do not understand what the Celtics direction is, they have no shot of beating Lebron’s insanely stacked team with just Thomas. Brown looks like he will be really good but his ceiling is ALL NBA 2nd team in his prime.
They are playing it smart. Why load up to take on the Warriors and the Cavs in their primes? They have a shot at two number one draft picks. They can build the team of the future while still being competitive. Instead of selling off their draft picks they would be better off selling off their vets down the line. Look at the haul Danny got from Pierce and Garnett. Say they did land George and gave away a nets pick to do so are they really taking out the Cavs and Warriors with that team??
Totally agree Frank
With Paul George,Isaiah Thomas, and Al Horford the Celtics could have competed with the Warriors and Cavs. Anyone who says otherwise does not know basketball. The Warriors are weak down low and have no bench, the Cavs are loaded but with George they could give the Cavs a series.
I think you’re right but to an extent. Unlike the majority of Celtics fans, I happened to disagree with the notion of adding a star player while trading those top picks. I just think in the long run, that wouldn’t be a smart move.
That being said, it’s frustrating Ainge didn’t at least try to improve the team at least a little bit. Losing Tucker to Toronto really chaps me because the price was dirt cheap. I think adding role players, like rebounders or defenders for the second unit, would have helped this season’s team immensely. That’s the frustrating thing with the trade deadline and post deadline.
What about Larry sanders I haven’t heard anything about him since he came in for a workout now why wouldn’t we go and try and sign him hes supposable an athletic big man that can rebound and is a free agent
Obviously his workout didn’t go well. He wasn’t very good when he was a player four years ago now he’s older and slower.
Well, if the Sixers were that interested in Bogut they should have made a trade with the Sixers
Why doesn’t that edit feature work here at HR like it does at MLB TR
Anyway, I meant to type Celtics!!!!!
They didn’t have the cap space. It would’ve meant trading Amir, which wouldn’t make sense.
I’m just surprised a team that has never been lucky in the draft lottery and hasn’t won a playoff series in several years is sitting around a room worried about affecting the chemistry of their current squad even though their top player may be hitting a wall, their max deal player is having his worst year, and they may be on the verge of losing their last 4 out 5 games.
While I agree with your worries in general, they were also the 2nd best team in the East two weeks ago, and when 19 points is hitting a wall, you’re in decent shape. Horford needs a real big alongside him, which would’ve made Bogut perfect, but for whatever reason they decided not to. I didn’t want them to stand pat, but I’m accepting it for now and am willing to see how they draft before I judge. If they hit on the next two picks, they can compete for the next 10 years.
As a celtics fan am worried enough until nw they still have no rim protector they are 1-2 after trade deadline and they will cavs tonight
Fact is C’s are treating the Celtics like an IVerson 76ers. Who know what will happen in the long run. KD’s out and who’s to say LBJ won’t break a nail and will be out for the season. Sadly, but honestly if Thomas gets injuried we’re basically screwed in scoring, ball handling and dishing. Everyone really just merely chips in while playing around IT! Horford is being paid a bank load and hasn’t really been bearing a scoring weight.
Danny and company should have really tried to add something to the roster to enhance scoring or rebounding.
Who do you think they should have added and what would they have given up? Easy to say they should have done something, but what?
While I would have liked to see them get TJones off waivers n cut Mickey, Im happy for NO trade….I think this season will decide the futures for IT and Olynyk, DA is going to use this season and postseason to evaluate these two in particular, and the team as a whole. KOs up for free agency after this season and IT will be seeking MAX after next season. If these two perform well in playoffs, and the celtcs advance to at least second round, I think DA will try his best to keep them in green. If not, he will lowball KO. IT too next yr, or try to move him at the draft or next season….I cant wait to see how it unfolds, we have alot of roster and financial flexibilty, plus our lotto picks thanks Nets!! I think DA will do whats best, I love the idea of Smart and Brown as conerstones of the franchise, Jalen could b a superstar
Crowder and Horford locked up long term as well. Horford looking at a possible triple double tonight currently at 9-10-10 with an awesome alley oop to Jaylen. The future is looking up.
Jones, PJ Tucker, Noel. Preferably two of them, with one being Tucker. Boston is loaded up with second rounders, which was the cost here. Send 2 seconds for Tucker (one would be Minnesotas this year which would’ve outbid the Raptors, and a first and a second for Noel. Match salary and roster spots accordingly. Frankly, if Young or Mickey were around after those moves, cut one and claim Terrence Jones. It wouldn’t have mortgaged the future and easily gotten them to the ECF. A deep playoff rotation would kill Cleveland because Lebron and co. can’t play 40 minutes a game against guys who don’t need to go more than 30.
Danny should sign Sully if he is in shape and ready to go. Then cut Zeller please. He is just a wasted roster spot. Please do not resign Amir Johnson. Reminds me of Kendrick Perkins on offense.
James Young goes before Zeller.
