1:40pm: Ewing will leave the Hornets staff and start his duties at Georgetown immediately, tweets Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
1:28 pm: Former Georgetown star Patrick Ewing has agreed to become the university’s head basketball coach, according to Casual Hoya. (Twitter link).
Currently an assistant with the Hornets, Ewing has been in touch with Georgetown officials since John Thompson III was fired nearly two weeks ago. He had his first face-to-face interview for the post today.
Ewing was a dominant center for the Hoyas, who were one of college basketball’s best teams during the 1980s. He played for John Thompson Jr., who was a major advocate for Ewing to be hired as coach.
After a Hall of Fame career with the Knicks, Ewing turned to coaching in 2003, working for the Rockets and Magic before being coming to Charlotte four years ago. He has reportedly been considered for several NBA head coaching jobs, but will now turn his attention toward the college game.
About damn time he got a head coaching job
Agree. No clue why he hasn’t gotten a job until now. Will be awesome to see Ewing and Georgetown play Mullin and St John’s.
Awesome for everyone
Because he’s horrible. Hoyas will give him plenty of time, yet he won’t turn out a contender. Same with Mullin at St Johns. Horrible.
Nice players. Horrible coaches.
Exactly what about Ewing’s assistant coaching stints in Houston, Orlando and Charlotte would you use to describe him as a horrible coach??
You’ll see.
Proof ? Give me an example which of those big men in those cities have improved more than what would be considered normal year-to-year?
Give me an example of the impact or difference Ewing has made on any big man in those cities.
Al Jefferson cited Ewing as a huge part of the development of his low post game. Al Jeff had a monster 2013-2014.
Besides that, if guys are improving at a “normal year to year rate” then that still doesn’t indicate how he is deemed “horrible.” If the big men on those teams totally regressed, I would get it…
Great guy.
Great player.
Wonderful man.
He will not succeed as a coach at Georgetown.
Give us a reason why you don’t think he will be a good coach
Ewing has been an assistant coach for almost 20 years. No other division one program in the country would hire him aside from his alma mater.
Pure and simple nepotism.
Was John Thompson III hired because he had a amazing track record at a smaller school and tremendous success as a head coach that warranted the head job at a large school? No…, he was hired because his name is John Thompson.
Patrick Ewing was hired because his name is Patrick Ewing.
Reasons ?
No track record of success. No above-normal improvements of the big men he was in charge of in previous jobs. There’s no reason to hire him other than his name.
Give me one single reason why anyone believes he will succeed. Other than, ” he deserves a chance.” LOL
How about one of those coaches from a team that made it into the NCAA tournament and won 20+ games when they shouldn’t have, or nobody thought they would.?
One of those guys that has proven themselves in a head coaching position on a smaller scale…. they deserve the chance…. they earned it.
