The Nets are planning an aggressive push for restricted free agents again, with Washington’s Otto Porter and Detroit’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as targets, tweets Keith Smith of RealGM.
It would be the continuation of a strategy that resulted in a four-year, $75MM offer sheet for Portland’s Allen Crabbe and a four-year, $50MM offer to Miami’s Tyler Johnson last summer. Both deals were matched by their current teams.
Similar offers this year would create financial dilemmas for the Wizards and Pistons, Smith adds (Twitter link).
Brooklyn has about $27MM in cap room right now and could easily get into position to offer a max deal to Porter or Caldwell-Pope. Most of that salary for next season is tied up in Brook Lopez ($22.6MM) and Jeremy Lin ($12MM), with eight players on the roster making between $1.12MM and $1.7MM.
A fourth-year small forward, Porter has been a starter in Washington the past two seasons. He averaged 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds in 80 games this year. Although the Wizards own his Bird rights, the team is in a bind with only about $7MM in cap space and the need to re-sign Bojan Bogdanovic and rebuild a faltering bench.
Caldwell-Pope has been Detroit’s starter at shooting guard for the past three and a half seasons and averaged 13.8 points per game this year. The Pistons are about $3MM over the cap entering this summer.
I dont see why Porter should re-sign with Washington, he’s not putting them in Cleveland territory.
I agree he should stay but money talks . Look out though the nets and the heat and a few other teams might be calling. I agree still he should stay
Actually you disagree…the OP is saying he should leave
Washington has no choice but to keep him. They’re capped out and thus can’t add outside talent thanks to their splurge last offseason for Mahinmi and the cap not increasing like people thought. If they lose Porter their team gets worse without a doubt, they’re already shallow as is.
Not really they got Oubre Jr
Do you really think that having Oubre invalidates Porter’s value? Washington lost because they have no depth, removing Porter does not help them. Sure, Oubre will get more minutes and develop quicker, but I think it’s asinine to think that the Wiz will get better by losing Porter.
Otto porter is up and coming I think has more upside. Nets need to do something they struggling . I wouldn’t be like the lakers and overpay like crazy but porter is younger. Only problem is is he ready to be the number two option ? If I was the nets u would go after him. Kcp is not a bad choice either bur I think porter is better choice
No duuuuh
Detroit needs to let KCP go, or do a sign and trade deal with him.
You trippin
Signing KCP to more than 4yr/$60m is probably a mistake.
Several teams will offer these guys a lot.
Like the Sixers. If they get a PG then KCP makes sense most. If they get Jackson or Monk maybe Porter.
Nets need everything and arent getting it via draft or trade.
OP is a solid glue guy with good 3 shot. He’ll make $$$ this offseason. If Wizards retain him it won’t solve the problem for their bench. As for Oubre? He’s nowhere near the shooter or offensive player Porter is. He’s a career defensive specialist like Corey Brewer. Washington needs a bench more than they need Porter. If they had even a respectable bench they would have beaten Boston this year.
This is the luxury of bird rights, rather than being a financial dilemma. The Wiz can keep Porter and Bogd. while still being well over the cap and using either the room or mini MLE to get another good piece
And thats why you are not a GM
I understand the Nets are a horrible team and are trying to sign young guys like KCP and Porter, but are those guys going to turn your franchise around? I don’t think so. I also think it’s time to move Lopez. He deserves to be on a better team after losing for so long.
And you deserve to not be a GM lol
