The players’ association has given its approval to a tentative agreement that would resolve Chris Bosh‘s standoff with the Heat, reports Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com.
The pact is still being finalized, Windhorst adds, as Bosh and his family, agents and lawyers are looking over the details.
Now 33, Bosh hasn’t played since the 2016 All-Star break when doctors discovered a recurrence of blood clot issues. He has remained on Miami’s roster, despite rumors that the Heat were looking to force him into a medical retirement and clear his salary from their cap.
If the agreement is finalized, it will free up about $52.1MM for the Heat over the next two seasons. Bosh will still get paid, with much of the money coming from insurance.
Windhorst explains that the process took so long to play out because it was covered by two collective bargaining agreements, with the one that goes into effect July 1st carrying significant changes involving player health that were enacted because of Bosh’s situation.
Bosh is seeking a treatment plan that will allow him to resume his NBA career with another organization. Current league rules would return his salary to the Heat’s cap if he were to play 25 games for another team. Miami officials entered discussions with Bosh in hopes of avoiding that potential penalty.

Oh, I did not know this…SMH
This is a total shakedown of insurance!!!
Between Prince Fielder and Chris Bosh, what is that like a 100 million up in smoke because of two people???
don’t worry, it’s probably not medical insurance. that just covers treatment, this is probably something like liability insurance or something that the team has. your taxes aren’t being affected.
LOL taxes! Well don’t get me wrong, I want Bosh to be healthy and happy, but to get paid 52 million from insurance, I would like to know where the pot of money is coming from and who put it there?? If it came from only the 30 NBA organizations, then fine, but if it didn’t………
These are 3rd party insurance companies. There is no NBA Players Association Contract Insurance Department.
Blame insurance companies if you’re really mad at anyone. They insure more players contracts across MLB and NBA than you’d think. If players have a history of injury a team may look into insurance regarding the injury before signing them to a lucrative deal, and it’s these insurance companies that are taking the risk. They’re paying out Prince Fielder and Chris Bosh, sure, but they have that money because of every other time they didn’t have to cover it. Prince Fielder literally needed to retire for his well being and the Miami Heat won’t let Chris Bosh have a stroke on the court for them, but you’re mad at them for taking precautions. These insurance companies would get away with not paying up for those two guys if it wasn’t such big corporations with big name lawyers that they’d have to answer to. The players are still getting paid for the contracts they EARNED, the owners and GMs have flexibility to keep a competitive team out there, and the richest and greediest people of them all are the ones paying for it. What’s wrong with any of those 3 things?
Insurance companies pay for this…. that money is all collected from customers who buy coverage, mostly athletic organizations. No public tax is used.
In fact, Bosh will still pay tax on that money he earns and it will be in the tens of million.
I hope the league finally steps in and not let him sign with GSW OR CC but I know they technically can’t but they need to do something it’s getting really bad for the game and fans
How is it bad for the fans? Players go where they can win a championship. That doesn’t mean they HAVE to go to either of those teams. I think the Spurs, Rockets, Celtics and to a lesser extent, Clippers and Thunder are one, maybe 2, players away from being at least serious conference champs.
As for GS or CC, I don’t think Bosh could earn himself a starting job on either of those teams. For one, I doubt the Cavs would want Bosh to start over Love or Thompson. I thought they might sign him for the minimum to come off the bench but he’s not a great complement to either player. Would much rather have a Chandler or Randolph type coming off the bench as being a physical force in the post might be asking too much of Bosh. I could see a team like the Clippers being a GREAT fit as he can come off the bench for either Griffin or Jordan and give them some outside shooting to spread the floor a bit. He would be a great late 4th quarter for Jordan to prevent them from “hack a Jordan”.
Lol at Tristan thompson starting over Bosh
How is it bad for fans well first off there is more then just five teams and second no go back to the first one
being that he just got 50mil for free, i wonder if he would sign a below market deal w. a contender. given his injury history i wouldnt assume he would get a lucrative deal anyway but still.
As a Heat fan, and a big fan of Chris Bosh sonce before he was drafted, this is such a weird feeling. I hate it so much b/c it feels bad to turn our back on someone like him, especially with what he has done for this organization and this city. I still believe he can and will play. The cap number isn’t bad if he does. I wish there was a way to let it play out.
That being said, we now finally have a resolution to this and know what will happen moving forward, which helps both parties. Also, there is the risk of something happening again, and I guess that is the main issue for the Heat, who want to know where their cap space is going these next 2 years. This situation this year was from undetected leftover from the 1st sotuation. It wasnt a 3rd issue, and Bosh has undergone testing proving that he isn’t susceptible to more clotting based on aNY predisposed condition. It’s not like he can’t play if he is healthy, which I expect him to be by next season. Now, the Heat can pursue free agents, or keep their own, which obviously is more of a known than Bosh right now. Personally would love to move Whiteside and open up that much more cap space, but I don’t see that happening at this point.
As for Bosh, I hope he ends up with GS. If they can keep the rest of that team, adding CB would be crazy amazing. They’d win at least 75 games with that team. Defense would be crazy good, and the floor would be spaced even more. Would be historic. I just hope he doesn’t go to Houston
Go to where a team pays over the hill over aged over rated former players ? Bulls and GARPAX are dumb enough to do it ……. again, see Wade and Rondo where they were bidding against themselves
Maybe now he can join his buddy Lebron.
Interesting the NBA is bailing out the most dishonest franchise in NBA history the Miami Heat. Pat Reilly is dishonest just ask Wade, Lebron and Bosh. Juwan Howad $100 million deal ring a bell anyone?
I think Bosh is very honest. He deserves his money.
