The Sixers will try to work out an extension with forward Robert Covington this summer, according to Michael Kaskey-Blomain of 97.3FM ESPN South Jersey.
Covington was a huge bargain this season, making a little over $1MM as a full-time starter. He appeared in 67 games, averaging 12.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, and developed into a feared defender.
Philadelphia has a team option on Covington for next season worth nearly $1.58MM and prefers to sign him to a long-term deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2018. The team sees him as an important part of its rotation going forward — and possibly a continued starter — even when all its young talent is healthy, according to Kaskey-Blomain.
Covington just completed his third season with the Sixers, who signed him in 2014 after he was waived by the Rockets. The 26-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery last month for a meniscus tear in his right knee, but the procedure was described as minor and he should be fully recovered long before training camp.
Do sixers have bird rights on him? If they do, decline the option and get a big name and then give him a multi year deal in the 10 million raise.
We’re not the Knicks who chase any big name- “Drose Melo and Noah
I’m sure if a big name wanted to go to philly, the sixers would jump on the opportunity
If I’m Philly try to your best to keep Covington but don’t over pay. Try to keep the core that you have together of Joel, Okafor, Simmons, McConnell, Covington, Stauskas, and Saric and build on it
Stauskas has been awful. Okafor has not been a part of the core. Keep Covington and dump okafor for a bag of balls.
Okafor is gone
We will sign him to a nice decent contract, both parties are made for each other #TrustTheProcess #Go6ers
I wonder if the Celtics would consider trading down a few spots to get a better fit for them, like Jonathan Isaac. Philly pick this year, Covington, Holmes, and maybe a future asset for the #1 pick this year? Philly loses Covington, but they can draft Fultz and pair him with Simmons and Embiid, and their young wings. If they get the Lakers pick, they can possibly take Monk there. Fultz, Monk, TLC, Simmons, Embiid is a really good starting point for them. Meanwhile, Boston gets another really good wing player in Covington, a 5 they need in Holmes, an athletic 4 that fits their roster for now and the future, with Isaac, and a future asset. Next year, they have Nader, Yabusele, and Zizic ready to come over as well. They can potentially move a couple of their assets for a star player, or they can ride out with what they have. Then resign Avery Bradley and let IT walk in free agency.
Pass
You wouldn’t move 2 FAs to be and a future asset for the top pick in the draft?
no way. Covington is a average at best. We have already crowder and brown
That wasn’t the point. Also, Covington actually is a really good defensive wing, that can shoot it. But the point is that it adds depth, or you can turn around and trade a couple of your pieces for a star, and still retain some of that depth. Meanwhile, you draft a much better fit for your team. Jonathan Isaac on the celtics would be really good, in my opinion. And the future asset also would be legit, so you’d still recoup something outside of those guys and the slightly lower pick
Formerlyz, if the Celtics don’t draft a point guard this year and let IT walk in a year, then who is their starting point guard moving forward? Please tell me Marcus Smart isn’t your answer
They have the Nets pick next year, and there are a couple of guards considered to be better than Fultz. Also, they don’t necessarily need a star PG, with the assumed roster moving forward. Like I said, they can trade for a star, or since they retain Avery Bradley in my scenario, they can go with Rozier/Jackson at times at the PG spot, or even without a true PG for spurts, b/c they’d have multiple combo guards and playmakers that can guard that position. Or they can figure something else out. I just personally wouldn’t pay IT 200 mil, as much as I like him, especially while paying Horford already, and if I want to keep Avery Bradley and still add to the roster
Just to clarify, I’m not saying this shpuld be a deal they make, guaranteed. I’m just saying it’s something to consider, among a lot of other options. Then again, I’m really high on Jonathan Isaac
Don’t overpay for Covington. He’s a nice role player, but Simmons is going to be the SF and they have depth in TLC. Cov has a declining 3P% and sub-40 FG%, he’s valuable for his defense or perceived defense.
