An extension for John Wall will be Washington’s top priority this offseason, sources tell J. Michael of Comcast Sportsnet. The team hasn’t yet reached out to Wall, but the front office is expected to do so now that Wall has made an All-NBA team this season and is eligible for the Designated Veteran Player Extension.
Wall can sign on for an additional four years and nearly $170MM with the CBA’s new extension. While that may be tempting to most, Wall isn’t ready to sign on the dotted line just yet. Sources tell Michael that Wall would like to see the front office’s plan for the future before committing long-term.
Wall had his most effective season as a pro during the 2016/17 season. He scored 23.1 points, dished out 10.7 assists and made 45.1% of his shots from the field. He wasn’t able to elevate the Wizards past the second round in the Eastern Conference, but that was arguably due to the team’s lack of firepower off the bench.
The Wizards will have several pressing issues this offseason, including Otto Porter‘s restricted free agency. Locking up Wall long-term is No. 1 on the list and once they know how long the point guard will be in Washington, they can move onto other objectives.
10.7 steals per game? That would be impressive. lol
Thanks for catching that. 10.7 steals per game would be extraterrestrial. By all accounts, John Wall is human.
He came up short in that Game 7 0-11 in the 4th Quarter that’s not the Bench that’s your Star Player
If he can get a consistent jumper he definitely best PG in the league
If the bench scores more than 5 points per game in the entire series, Wall doesn’t even have to worry about a game 7.
Yea theirs no way you let this dude slide, go for Paul George in the summer. Or try and get a better center then Gortat please, Dwight might be a good idea. Wizards need to sign Taj and Lawson for bench scoring
What could the Wiz trade for George? I’d assume Wall, Beal, and Porter are untouchable. The picks aren’t that good, not a ton of young promising talent to work with at the bottom either. Satoransky and McCollough or however you spell it could be decent rotation guys down the line but not enough to fetch George by any means.
He could just decide to opt out of his deal and sign with Washington. The Wizards can just decide to not sign Porter, bring in George and sign Alex Len to back up Gortat or just go ahead and start Len and see what develops
He can’t opt out until 2018 so no
Wall is quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the NBA. I hope he stays with the Wizards (unless he signs with the Celtics). They are headed in the right direction. With some big bench upgrades they could be a top 5 team in the NBA.
I get a kick out of these players wanting to hear about the master plan of the front office. you’re about to take a contract that pays you 42.5 million dollars per year what’s the expectation? High end free agents are going to want to take pennies on the dollar for the honour of being your teammate?
It is possible to piece together great teams in this structure but it takes a great deal of luck and timing to get the right combo of great players on entry contracts to fit into the cap. You can’t just expect to take up half your teams payroll and expect them to have a plan for making a dramatic improvement on top of that.
these players of Walls caliber are worth their money and deserve it I just don’t see how he or a guy like PG can expect a drastic improvement to the supporting cast when you’re taking all of the cap space to make said improvements.
