Unsurprisingly, Clippers forward Blake Griffin has formally opted out of the final year of his contract, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical tweets. The All-Star will hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent.
While the Clippers are expected to at least attempt to retain Griffin and fellow free agent Chris Paul, the forward also expects to see interest from other teams looking to add a star.
Earlier this week we wrote about the Rockets targeting the 28-year-old power forward and it wasn’t long ago when Wojnarowski mentioned that the Celtics could be the biggest threat to the Clippers as far as luring Griffin away was concerned.
Had Griffin not opted out through his early termination clause, he would have made $21.4MM in 2017/18. Instead, as Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times tweets, he’ll be eligible for as much as $175MM through five years so long as he stays with the franchise.
If Griffin leaves the Clippers, he’ll be eligible for a four-year, $130MM deal.
The guys always hurt. Huge gamble.
He’s going to get 10+ more million on the market
Blake needs to trust the process. Would he fit in with sixers?
As a sixers fan I’d pass.
He’d want too much money and it’d hurt the sixers when it comes time to re up Joel Embiid and Simmons.
He’d fit perfectly w/76ers. Griffins
Injury prone and can’t win.
I really am impressed with sixers fans. I see some that have really “trusted the process”. As a hawks fan, I feel like I am gonna have to learn from sixers fans on patience and trusting the process
Yep, we’re about to undergo our own process. Luckily the patience in Atlanta is long withstanding, coach Bud and Wilcox really screwed up not getting anything for Horford and now Millsap because they were being ‘nice’ to them.
Did they have a choice?
Yes
Yes, the last two years they were both on the trading block only to be pulled back because the Hawks wanted to keep them to keep core together. Then they didn’t offer Horford Max 5 year deal and he walked, sounds like they’re not gonna offer Milsap Max deal either so he’ll be leaving… basically some good prospects, role players and draft picks just walked out the door 2 years in a row
No chance in Philly already got a bunch of Fowards!!
Sixers need the veteran presence of a power forward who only needs 12-15 minutes and doesn’t mind coming off the bench. Gerald Henderson is a prime example.
Yup, Gerald is really a great power forward. Good call.
I know he’s a guard and they are cutting him.
Cut some salary, sign some free agents. They’re building something over there.
What an enigma of a player. Could give you a lot if he can stay healthy and play near the rim, but he has not shown that ‘get on my back’ attitude that a championship caliber team needs
I think OKC makes a lot of sense, assuming the owners open up their wallets (which they were unwilling to do prior) and Griffin gets the impression from Westbrook that he’s staying beyond his current contract. Griffin is from their and if healthy those two could be a really athletic coupling.
Westbrook, Griffin, Adams and some shooters could be great. I think Kanter is decent trade bait for some depth or a good rotation player.
