Bucks guard Malcolm Brogdon was named the league’s Rookie of the Year, which was announced on the TNT awards show Monday night.
Brogdon, a second-round pick, edged out a pair of Sixers — Joel Embiid and Dario Saric — in the voting. The 36th overall pick last summer appeared in 75 regular-season games and started 28. He averaged 10.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG and 4.2 APG in 26.4 MPG. He also shot 40.4% from long range.
Embiid posted much bigger stats — 20.2 PPG and 7.8 RPG — but only appeared in 31 games.
A majority of the Hoops Rumors staff selected Brogdon as their choice for the award. He is the first non-lottery pick to win the award since Mark Jackson in 1988.
Good for Malcom
Always loved the President’s game since his days at Virginia
Congrats Brogdon I actually thought it would be co-ROTY between him & either 6er player
good embiid didn’t deserve it, you have to play games to actually get it, 31 don’t cut it
His best ability is his availability.
Rookie of the Month:
Embiid: 3
Saric: 2
Hield: 2
Murray: 1
Chriss: 1
Ferrell: 1
Ulis: 1
Hemangomez: 1
Brogdon: 0
Good point!!! If Embiid wasn’t hurt then Saric won’t play much so it’s really a mix of both. Brogdon was the only rookie with a triple double this season too.
Wow. 10 points and almost 3 rebounds every game. Brogdon couldn’t win player of the month but takes home ROY? What a complete sham. Dario got screwed.
Brogdon came in from day 1 and contributed on the defensive end. His plus/minus shows his contributions. He isn’t an all stat player and yet his percentages across the board are better.
Saric had numbers, but they were in lieu of helping his team win. Not all of his fault but even when they had strung wins together, he is a big negative on plus/minus.
Brogdon won because he played both ways and helped his team win. That’s not exactly a sham.
Dario averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds in a bigger role than Brogdan. What I’m trying to get at is that Saric, after Embiid was out for the year, was basically the main option in Philly and his numbers are a result (both inflated and deflated) of the volume expected out of him. While that doesn’t mean Saric should be punished for it, consider that Brogdan put up relatively similar numbers (albeit in the same amount of minutes) but in a much lesser role.
Should’ve been Willy
Sure, if he a) helped his team win or b) did what he did all year. If WHG does that all year, he probably wins in a weak class. But you don’t get credit for “if”, otherwise Embiid would be ROY.
Yeah that’s what meant. Obviously he didn’t do enough, but had he been allowed to start over Noah earlier in the year (as he should have), he would have had a great chance at winning. He had multiple DNP’s after outplaying both Noah and KOQ.
What a joke. If embiid off the ballot does Dario win. Should Embiid be on ballot after only playing 31 games. Same deal next year when Simmons and Fultz split votes and Ball wins. Brogdon is next MCW.
But MCW never helped anyone win anything and never shot well. Dude shot 40% from 3 while playing D from day 1 and also running so,e of the offense.
If Embiid isn’t on there then more votes likely go to Brogdon who was the early favorite for the award anyways or the other candidate. Saric didn’t win because he put meaningless stats up for the last couple months and didn’t help the, win anything.
Individual awards tend to go to guys who help the team win unless the numbers are overwhelmingly big. Like if Embiid had been healthy all year.
Lol how is Brogdan the next MCW? If you knew anything, you would know (or be able to come to the conclusion) that the reason MCW won Rookie of the Year because he was the best player on a really bad team. Being the best player on a really bad team means you are going to get a lot of usage and, in theory, your stats should be better because of the high volume. Brogdan was/is not the best player on his team and he wasn’t the main option either.
I mean Saric would’ve had my vote but the fact that a guy who didn’t even play HALF the season was a finalists shows how terrible this class was
Ok but it’s a player who played twice as well as everyone else for half a season.
Brogdon will be a back up in 2-3 yrs. Had a pedestrian season on a decent team. So are these awards about stats or if the player helped his team win? Sixers improved 18 albeit from 10 to 28. ROY will never go to best rookie again with all drafted <20 yrs old and playing less. Will always go to a Brogdon who plays more minutes and games. This is Saric should of won
Do you even check what you’re typing to see if its correct or statistically significant enough? You claim “will always go to a Brogdan who plays more minutes and games”. Brogdan averaged .1 minute more than Saric (hardly a significant difference) and played in 6 less games. So what’s your argument again? I mean if you’re going to make the argument that it should go to the rookie with the best year (stats wise, and not that I would agree with this year’s argument) then you should be supporting Embiid who clearly had the best year in his 31 games played. Also, your argument that the “ROY will never go to the best rookie again” is wrong considering Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns won the award while putting up the best year amongst their rookie peers.
He also won ROY in probably the worst class in decades
It really wasn’t bad. It’s that the real contributing rookies only got a chance in the last 25-30 games this season. Look at Tyler Ulis and Chriss in Phoenix. Buddy Hield and Skal Labissiere in Sac. Hernangomez in NY. All of these guys played well at the end of the season. Caris LeVert looked decent but he’s a Net so I’m not sure if it was more a product of circumstance. Yogi Ferrell may have just been neutered with Dennis Smith coming to Dallas. Jamal Murray, Jaylen Brown, Taurean Prince. There was plenty of talent, but it didn’t shine until late and consistency matters to a point.
i’d like to point out that both Saric and Embiid are not from the 2016 draft class they are from the 2014 draft class shows you how bad the 2016 draft was.
Reminds me of Blake Griffin of 2009 draft class. He got Injured his rookie season, and never suited up one game for the Clips during his rookie season. Remember all the people screaming BUST!!! He was eligible for 2010 ROY (even though he was drafted in 2009) and won it. Embiid’s eligibility two years after being drafted shows his brittleness not playing two years after being drafted but I disagree 2016 draft class was weak. Embiid’s a freak of nature and only time will tell. If he was out this season, and eligible for ROY 3 years later, I bet, he’d still win it. Wouldn’t mean 2017 draft class is garbage. Embiid’s special
well deserved
Sorry but this is a joke. If we are purely talking the rookie who makes the biggest impact it surely ain’t Brogdon with those average stats and no rookie of the month. If you really don’t want to give it to Embiid because he only played half a season then fine. He is the best rookie period but Saric is way better than Brogdon as his last few months clearly demonstrated. Better watch out for Embiid tho I remember watching the first game after the all star break and he about tore the rim off on a dunk cause he didn’t make the all star game. Here comes the vengeance!!!
How is the argument about not receiving player of the month? That’s honestly what you and others have boiled it down to. He came in and played for a winning team from the get. Yeah, 10/3/4 and a steal a game isn’t impressive. Until you consider hismplay actually has results showing his team was better with him on the court than off. His team was about 5 points worse with him off the court. Conversely, the 76ers were about 2 points better with Saric off the court. That’s just on offense. Defense isn’t much but it widens the gap between the two another full point.
All in all, it showed that while Saric put up better numbers, he made his team worse. In a race where there is no clear cut guy, analytics will become incredibly heavy. It’s why a guy like Hield who lit it up after his trade doesn’t deserve consideration for the award. He was only a net positive once he got moved. The guy who likely would have given Brogdon a run for his money if he played more was Hernangomez in NY who was a net positive player once he was able to play.
