The Celtics have extended a qualifying offer to Kelly Olynyk, Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe tweets. The 26-year-old center is coming off a year in which he posted 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Given Boston’s position in the middle of some serious free agency pursuits, it’s worth noting that the C’s retain the ability to rescind the offer so long as Olynyk doesn’t accept it first, Himmelsbach adds.
Considering that Olynyk is slated to become a restricted free agent if he doesn’t, it’s unlikely that he would accept the one-year, $7.7MM qualifying deal.
Olynyk is a sharpshooting big man that can make an impact from beyond the arc, a combination in particularly high demand these days, but he doesn’t contribute much outside of his niche.
Regardless, whether or not Boston chooses to match any offer that Olynyk can scrounge up on the open market will largely depend on their success finessing a big name or two over to Beantown this offseason.
He’s just here to dislocate shoulders Hahahaha
Olynyk is a real nice player and in fact could be a starter if he came back. That said, if the Celtics want a big piece this free agency, it may come at the expense of him. He really proved himself this postseason, but he’s in the way for a shot at big name free agents. I’m very torn on him.
He’s too inconsistent IMO to be anything but a bench/role player. Some games he goes off a bit, others, he kind of disappears. Nice role player, but that’s about it.
He has Jeff Green syndrome; he comes in and out of games. Thing is, what he brings to the table is very valuable to the team. It’s great to have a seven footer who can space the floor and be efficient. You can live with the fact he’s a foul magnet because he has been improving on both sides of the floor.
I can still see him in my mind, dislocating Kevin Love’s shoulder in last year’s playoffs, which he should’ve been suspended for…he’s a goon.
Two seasons ago.
When this guy was drafted, they said he had “T-rex arms” so i thought he’d never make it but he’s accomplished enough in the nba to warrant a QO so I’m happy for him, even though he accidently ripped Love’s shoulder, I don’t know why you felt the need to bring that up, get over it doesn’t belong here.
This is a no brainer in my option after the Pacers asked the Celtics for 2 starters(probably Crowder and Bradley) and 2 first round picks(Nets pick and the LAL/SAC pick) that is way too much for a player that could turn out to be a rental.
And what if the condition for that price was George agreeing to an extension?
I still wouldn’t do it for that package. Their window is not 3 years, it’s 5. PG would get them closer, but not put them over the top.
Why would george ever agree to an extension there is zero reason for him to do so.
You mean two seasons ago
