The NBA Finals are in the books and the Warriors captured their second title in three years; now the attention turns to keeping the championship-winning core intact and it starts with two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, Stephen Curry.
Curry, 29, will see the four-year, $44MM pact he signed prior to the 2012/13 campaign expire this offseason and he will hit unrestricted free agency. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, Curry qualifies as a designated veteran player, making him eligible for the maximum deal worth approximately $205MM over five years. Despite the lofty commitment, Warriors owner Joe Lacob told Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News that retaining Curry is the top priority.
“We’re going to do whatever it takes to keep Steph here and happy,” Lacob said. “I know he wants to be here and we want him here. I do not anticipate any issues with him staying.”
In his first season teaming with Kevin Durant, Curry enjoyed another strong season, averaging 25.3 PPG, 6.6 APG, and shooting a career-low — yet still impressive — 41.1% from three-point range in 79 games. Curry carried over the strong performance into the postseason, averaging 28.1 PPG and shooting 48.4% from the field in 17 games.
It remains to be seen how exactly the Warriors will manage their cap to accommodate a substantial raise for Curry — and perhaps for Durant, who holds a $27MM option for next season and is eligible for a max deal himself. However, the Warriors’ success with their longtime point guard and Curry’s team-friendly pact the last four years should result in the team giving him as much as he wants.
I don’t see any way GS will be able to keep all their key FA’s. They have two stars in KD, Steph and key role players West, Igoudala, McGee, Clark who’ll all need new contracts.
I wonder if Durant takes another 1+1 deal and then leaves if they win. The only thing he could do to overshadow Lebron after that would be to go to Boston or somewhere and knock him off in the ECF. Won’t happen but imagine if Lebron only made one more finals appearance. That would be crazy.
Keep all their FA’s and add James, Harden, and Westbrook. Shoot for 94-0.
Lol
$$ will be the reason they win or don’t win another championship. KD, Steph, Klay, Draymond. I see a 2 year window when Klay’s deal is up. Going to need to keep drafting all stars.
Klay can be replaced, whereas that isn’t easily stated about Steph and KD. GS should actually get something for him while his stock is high
It won’t be an issue. These guys are going to make more sacrifices if they want to win more rings and they are likely to do that. Theres buzz that Durant is willing to take less to keep some of these guys.
Curry once mentioned in an interview regarding his new contract that if he complains about even $11MM a year then he’s got problems.
A solid guy very grounded. We will see what happens.
Clark will likely get paid somewhere and possibly McGee. If West doesn’t retire then he’s back again with the same deal for another year. There will be some changes for sure but not everyone is gone.
Can be replaced? How do you replace an All-NBA defender who shoots 40%+ from 3? He isn’t your typical 3 and D player that does just that. He can actually play ball, not just spot up where the team wants. You have to remember that the guy on the team that has the high point game in their careers is Klay. Having him adds so much more versatility to that team plus it takes pressure off of a Durant to defend the best wing. They let him leave and they might as well say that winning isn’t as important as initially thought.
Yeah I’m with you, SOME of what Klay does can be replaced but you’re not reaching his level with any FA that would be in the Warriors price range.
Or in their range should they keep future draft picks.
The only players I can stand on GSW are Steph and Klay but Draymond and KD act like D-bags
What about them makes them “d-bags”?
he has to explain that about draymond really?
You mean because he is generally good at everything but not great at anything?
The things Draymond does are the same things LeBron does. The difference is we pretend to overlook them because it is LeBron.
Yeah I know right
I think they’ll keep Curry and Durant but they’ll lose Igoudala this off season and they’ll most likely lose Green or Klay when they hit free agency. Just don’t see how they’ll be able to keep them all together. Maybe I’m wrong and maybe some of these guys will take less money to keep it together.
Curry, Durant, Green, and Klay will be together for many years to come. KD takes a little smaller salary next year to keep them all together, including Iggy.
Having their Bird Rights (Durant in 2 more years), allows them to be together for good. Vet FAs will continue to sign for much less than market value for a ring. They’ve only just begun…
They probably lose Iggy this offseason…

Same
Look for the Warriors to keep their core of KD, Steph, Klay, Green, Iggy for next year. One thing about these guys – they really like each other. They are well grounded. They want to win. All are important to their success. Hope they can keep Clark, but that will be hard. McGee would be good to bring back too. And McCaw is a star down the road.
Well considering Iggy is a FA, I imagine it is probably his last year there.
Warriors will keep their core together.
