A medical review from the NBA and the players’ union has concluded that Chris Bosh‘s blood clotting condition is in fact career-ending, Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel reports. The decision goes along with what the Miami Heat had previously established.
Bosh hasn’t played since part-way through the 2015/16 campaign but has previously mentioned an interest in coming back to the NBA if he’s ever deemed medically eligible. By waiting to sort through the complex legalities of the unique situation as opposed to attempting to shed his salary as early possible, the Heat have now guaranteed that when they waive Bosh, they won’t run the risk of his salary ever returning to the books in the event that he’s cleared to play in the future.
Had they decided not to wait, they could have looked to exclude Bosh’s contract as early February 9, 2017.
All that’s left now, Winderman says, is for the Heat to formally waive the big man, something that they’ll do as soon as they need to clear up the cap space. If another team claims him through the traditional waivers, they will not be eligible for the same cap relief.
Although it won’t count towards Miami’s team payroll at any point, Bosh is guaranteed the remaining portion of his contract, totaling over $50MM through 2018/19, the majority of it covered by insurance.
Ultimately, now that the complications surrounding the cap impacts of Bosh’s health have come to a formal conclusion, the Heat can look forward to a summer with $37MM of cap space, Winderman writes.
If Bosh ever does decide to pursue a comeback, an unlikely outcome per TNT’s David Aldridge, he’ll need to present medical evidence that meets the league approval.
sad news
Wow, how sad.
However in some ways, he has nothing to be too sad about.
He’s won several Championship Rings and played a part in winning them
He’s made lots of money ( I don’t begrudge him) I just get annoyed at the system.
Also, I will always remember him for that funny skit that he did to make the All-Star team that one year with that Cowboy Hat and Used Car Salesman routine he had!!!
Heck yeah and his messing with teammates sideline interviews. Cool seeing such a good guy have success and even though he probably wants to play really badly, i’m glad he accomplished a lot to where it won’t bother him as much as long as he has his health. Rings, money, and most importantly health are better to have than playing time.
He was a Legend in Miami
It’s definitely a shame, but it is much better news than if he collapsed and died on the basketball court like Hank Gathers or Reggie Lewis. Bosh can still live a full happy life with plenty of money to not have to work any harder than he wants.
As a Heat fan, and a big fan of Chris Bosh sonce before he was drafted, this is such a weird feeling. I hate it so much b/c it feels bad to turn our back on someone like him, especially with what he has done for this organization and this city. I still believe he can and will play. The cap number isn’t bad if he does. I wish there was a way to let it play out.
That being said, we now finally have a resolution to this and know what will happen moving forward, which helps both parties. Also, there is the risk of something happening again, and I guess that is the main issue for the Heat, who want to know where their cap space is going these next 2 years. This situation this year was from undetected leftover from the 1st sotuation. It wasnt a 3rd issue, and Bosh has undergone testing proving that he isn’t susceptible to more clotting based on aNY predisposed condition. It’s not like he can’t play if he is healthy, which I expect him to be by next season. Now, the Heat can pursue free agents, or keep their own, which obviously is more of a known than Bosh right now. Personally would love to move Whiteside and open up that much more cap space, but I don’t see that happening at this point.
As for Bosh, I hope he ends up with GS. If they can keep the rest of that team, adding CB would be crazy amazing. They’d win at least 75 games with that team. Defense would be crazy good, and the floor would be spaced even more. Would be historic. I just hope he doesn’t go to Houston…
But if this is really it, and he doesn’t come back, he’s had an amazing career. He was able to evolve his game significantly too. Heat wouldn’t have won those championships without him. He definitely has tons of prospects for moving forward in whatever capacity he chooses. He is really smart, and well rounded, as well as obviously passionate about the things he cares about. I have no doubt he’ll be successful. Still, it would be a real shame for someone as cool and as good a person as him to not be able to continue doing what he loves. Regardless of anything, Chris Bosh will alays be part of Heat Nation, and his number will hang in the rafters in 2 arenas someday
Man that sucks
I would suggest if he still has the passion go into coaching. He was a smart player.
