12:38pm: There’s growing skepticism among some executives who have been in touch with the Knicks about whether the club is serious about moving Porzingis, according to Chris Mannix of The Vertical. Mannix tweets that New York’s asking price is “extremely high.”
[RELATED: Celtics interested in Kristaps Porzingis]
11:01am: Within his full report on Porzingis, Wojnarowski writes that the big man “remains determined” to stick with the Knicks and help turn the team around. However, Jackson has become “increasingly intrigued” by the possibility of testing the market for Porzingis. If the Knicks get serious about engaging teams and pursuing a deal, they’d want to acquire a front-line guard, says Wojnarowski.
Janis Porzingis, Kristaps’ brother and an employee at his agency, tells Begley that his brother wants to remain in New York “despite how the Knicks are treating their players.”
10:20am: Knicks president Phil Jackson has not ruled out the possibility of trading Kristaps Porzingis, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, who reports (via Twitter) that a “frenzy of interest” is growing as teams become aware that Porzingis isn’t considered untouchable.
The Knicks have received several calls about Porzingis from teams in recent days, per Ian Begley of ESPN.com, who confirms (via Twitter) that New York hasn’t dismissed the possibility of a trade. Meanwhile, Wojnarowski adds (via Twitter) that Jackson recently met with stretch-four prospect Lauri Markkanen, who would receive consideration with the No. 8 pick in the draft if New York were to move Porzingis.
Porzingis, who will turn 22 in August, is coming off a second NBA season in which he averaged 18.1 PPG, 7.2 RPG, and 2.0 BPG, while making 35.7% of his three-pointers. His ability to protect the rim on defense and stretch the floor on offense makes Porzingis one of the most desirable young players in the league, so it’s no surprise that teams would be calling the Knicks if there’s a chance he’s available.
While I wouldn’t expect Jackson to move Porzingis, there have been some concerning signs on that front this year. Apparently displeased with the treatment of Carmelo Anthony and the dysfunction surrounding the team, Porzingis skipped his exit meeting with the Knicks at the end of the season. He then opted to spend his offseason in his home country of Latvia, where the Knicks have had a harder time staying in touch with him — according to Begley, no one from the team has been in contact with Porzingis since he skipped his exit meeting.
I’d still be shocked if Porzingis was on the move anytime soon, but this will obviously be a story we keep a close eye on going forward.
Celtics trade 3, the 2nd rounder in the 30’s, Rozier, our first next year lottery protected (not that that should matter), and the Clippers first rounder in 2019.
Double the offer and maybe the Knicks consider it
Meant to also add Smart. The 3 pick is what you hope Porzingis turns into, and could have a good chance of that considering he’d start off as one of the best options. Add 2 young guards, one low end starter and one rotational but that have upside, 2 future firsts and a quality 2nd rounder, and that should be more than enough.
Known quantity > potential. The #3 is what we hope but it is far from a guarantee and the fact that Kristaps is about the same age as a 2nd or 3rd year college player but has proven 2 years of NBA track record he then becomes much more important than the #3 pic. If I’m the Knicks and am committed to a rebuld then I can careless about rotational pieces and a low end starter.
Number 3 pick, next years lakers/sacramentos 2019, terry roizer, and another 1st round pick excluding brooklyns from next year
If you guys want Kristaps then a smart Phil Jackson (and I’m not saying he is) is going to want this years #3, Brooklyn’s #1 and I’d also want either a current young player or another 1st.
I’d think he would take the 3 and the Lakers/Sac pick wth Rozier and the Clips first in 19.
He might absent another offer but I would guess the Knicks would get better offers.
While I strongly believe Ainge is building to draft Lebron’s son rather than to defeat Lebron, I’d love to see Porzingis in Kelley Green.
Ha when does LBJR come up for the draft?
Not sure, but Wade’s kid is 2021 when Miami doesn’t have a pick lol
Ha
Funny…I heard the kid does have handles sooooo.
James Dolan is so clueless. Phil Jackson is begging to be fired.
I think of that episode of Seinfeld where George is trying to get Steinbrenner to fire him so he can accept a better job with the Mets. Maybe Phil need to be caught taking a crap inside a Ranger’s Stanley Cup while pissing on one of those 70’s NBA Championship and wiping his but with the American Flag. THEN….maybe Dolan would fire him.
Nah that’s worthy of a Dolan raise
I wonder if Jackson would rule out trading himself? Ahhh wait he only looks to trade those who have talent.
This could be a very smart move for the Knicks— Porzingis is good, but I don’t think he is a star that can lead them to a championship, I think he’s more of a great 2nd option on a good team.
Bulls for Jimmy Butler and #16?
Porzingis is 22 and is under team control for at least 3 more years (most likely 5-6 years). Why on Earth would they deal him for 2 years of Butler at a much more expensive price?
They have him for 2 more years guranteed and I think he would then be a Restricted FA which means 1 more year if the Knicks choose to match. I have a feeling that if Kristaps feels things are still bad then he’ll forego the additional contract that means more $$$ and just leave the same way Shaq did when he was with the Magic.
You don’t understand how restricted free agency works. Only way they would have him for one year after his rookie deal is if he played for his qualifying offer. Which never happens because it would mean turning down $100+ million deal
If a player wants to leave the team enough, he signs the QO to become a unrestricted FA next offseason. (I.E. Greg Monroe) Don’t ask me why Pistons didn’t trade him when it was SO obvious Monroe/Drummond wasn’t working out. It wouldn’t surprise me if KP goes this route, but Knicks will trade him if it ever gets that far. I love KP, but Knicks have the upperhand.
Monroe wasn’t getting the same offers as UP eill. Don’t pretend like you think that is a comparable situation
The draft pick is going the wrong way in your proposal.
The knicks need a mixture of immediate improvement and building blocks for the future and the celtics can offer both. It should be the 3rd pick, the clippers pick, Jae, and rozier for porzingis and someone with an expiring contract to make the contracts line up… this gives the knicks a pg they can mold, a starting sf that’s affordable, the 3 pick, 8 pick and clippers pick in 2019. That puts them in a much better spot than they are currently in….
Knicks don’t have any expiring contracts. Your trade would work with O’Quinn or Kuzminskas. But the point here is Jackson would be looking for an established guard who can play in the triangle, so I don’t see how any of these offers would interest him. I can think of reasons they SHOULD interest him, because the Knicks need to start over (especially if for some reason they are trading Porzingis), but Phil surely doesn’t see it that way.
Butler & 16 are you nuts?
Knicks get: (2) 2017 2nd round picks; 2018 Laker’s 6-30; Sixers 2018 #1 protected; Okafor
Sixers get: Porzingis
OR keep their ‘assets’ and sign Gallinari to a 2 yr 20M+ Deal to play the 3/4.
That’s a horrible return. Two 2nd round picks is the same as a lottery scratch off.
I’ll laugh so hard if they trade an all around player like Porzingis to draft Markannen.
If you read the tea leaves they draft Kennard at 8 LOL that would be laughable. Nice player but it’d be so Knicks to draft him at 8.
This has to be smokescreen. Phil can’t be that dumb, or someone in the franchise has to be saying that they can’t mess around with this pick. They can’t seriously let this dude keep being this incompetent
Phil has gone from Zen Guru to Stunod.
I mean look at the Knicks history of picks. They don’t even have a 1st rounder on their team that they drafted from the last 10 years except Kristaps. It’s like SOP.
The sick thing is that Dolan could have opted out, and didnt, to pay him 12 million a year. And I have to assume that’s just so he has someone to shift the blame to. But man, how can he be cool with this guy doing this stuff?
agreed. Dolan had a chance to get out if this mess and get a fresh start on Kristaps and maybe even Mello.
Dolan is cool with it because he’s an idiot who thinks he’s smarter than he is. He’s stubborn and arrogant. Look at the Rangers. They were middling at best when Dolan was meddling and throwing money around. When he stopped and got hands-off, the Rangers became a perennial playoff team.
He hasn’t stopped meddling yet with the Knicks. I hope he does some time because they’re never going to win anything with him around.
Knicks get: Thompson, Henderson, Okafor, Sixers 2018 #1 protected, Lakers 2018 6-30
Cavs get: Melo
Sixers get: Shumpert, Porzingis
That makes no sense for the Sixers unless they don’t think Embiid will ever be healthy. So, actually, maybe that makes a ton of sense for the Sixers.
For Cleveland, that might make sense if they really want Melo, but it makes them a disaster on defense. I suppose they try to trade Love for a defensive oriented big (Tyson Chandler?), then maybe this makes some sense for Cleveland. Except it doesn’t, because they really shouldn’t want Melo, but who knows what they are thinking.
I don’t see how this works for the Knicks. They don’t get an established guard, which is what Phil seems to want for Porzingis. The value of the Sixers 2018 pick is unclear, but there’s a decent chance they could make the playoffs in the East, so it’s not a great pick. And the Lakers 6-30 pick is probalby not going to exist and will likely either be #1 to the Sixers or 2-5 to Boston), so then what? Anyway, not nearly enough for the Knicks, or what they are looking for.
1. Porzingis at the 4 dude. Wake up – a 7-3 stretch 4 Been a topic on Philly sports radio for a couple months. Salivating at the idea of Embiid and Porzingis on the court together with Ben Simmons and now Fultz.
2. There is no way Love gets traded for Tyson Chandler lol that’s such a homer trade. Almost as bad as all the Eric Bledsoe for #1 overall trades.
3. What works for the Knicks? They get 2 players that can fit within the Triangle Offense in Thompson and Okafor, 2 draft picks in 2018, and they keep their own this year, plus freeing up 9M in cap space.
4. With their 8th overall they go Dennis Smith Jr.
5. It’s either agree on a buyout with Melo, or trade this year’s pick to dump him. Idk a world where Melo get’s move and 1 or two 1st round picks aren’t attached if it’s not a dump for dump like Shumpert & Thompson for Melo.
6. I think the Laker’s pick more than likely ends up 6 and beyond if/when they land PG13.
So you go into 2018 with 3 first round picks, in a just as stacked draft, and you keep your 2017 pick.
phil is a dumb bastid!!!!
If the Knicks want a front line guard, would it be impossible for the Celtics to package Isaiah Thomas perhaps? I don’t want to see Isaiah traded, but given he is a free agent after next season, it could be feasible.
If they still had the #1 overall pick, taking Fultz would have made sense and trading IT.
For Boston – # 3, Nets pick next year, Smart and Crowder.
For Sac – #5, # 10, WCS plus a future #1.
Minn – #7, Wiggins and next years #1
GS – Klay Thompson & a couple of picks.
It’s not clear who gets whom in this trade. Regardless, it makes no sense:
The Warriors: (1) aren’t trading Thompson (especially for anyone listed in your proposal); (2) don’t have any picks available to trade because of pick trading limitations; (3) don’t have valueable picks anyway.
The Celtics I assume are getting Thompson in this trade. I guess they might make this deal. They’d have to find a way to trade Bradley for a big, I guess, plus they’d have no bench and no SF, unless you’re saying they get Wiggins, too.
We can’t tell at all what Minn or Sac are getting in this deal to have any idea if it makes sense for them. Don’t bother, though, this isn’t a real trade.
I think this is 4 proposed trades, not one
If that’s the case..
1 – really bad trade for Celtics
2 – fair trade if you take out WCS
3 – Really bad trade for Wolves
4 – Klay for Kristaps would be sufficient enough – Klay is worth a few 1st rounders and so is Kristaps.
If you’re just trading for him, I think 2 or 3 picks is what it would take.
If the King’s offered up the 5, 10, and a future 1st I would do that. This draft would be a complete reload for the Knicks at that point.
At 5 – Fox/Tatum/Isaac
At 8 – Markkanan/Smith JR
At 10 – Kennard/Mitchell
Or package 8 and 10 to move up to 6 and take Isaac while picking up another asset or 2 from Orlando
I wouldn’t. I’d rather build around Porzingis than to expect a 5 and a 10 pick to yield a player that good.
Not going to lie, that idea with GS is interesting, mostly b/c Porzongis would be crazy good on that team, but I wouldn’t be able to do it if I’m GS.
What I think could tip the scale is the impending cap issues for the Warriors. Porzingis instead of Klay allows that team to stay together and I don’t think they can afford to resign him.
I’m not looking to offer a good deal. I’m listing what it would take to make it worth giving him up. I don’t think there is any way a player like that is traded unless someone is willing to overpay.
You never trade a player like Porzingis unless you get back more than fair value because the best players are worth so much more than the average players.
No clue who gets what.
He’s listing 4 different deals for Porzingis
trade him to minnesota for rubio, levine, muhammed, their 1 this year and the right s to their 1 next year.
Bledsoe, #4 overall, Dragan Bender, 2018 Heat 1st rounder, 2021 1st rounder, 2017 phoenix 2nd round pick, and Jared Dudley for Porzingis, Lance Thomas, Noah, and the Knicks 2019 1st round pick
Or boston could offer Jae Crowder’s contract, Rozier, #3 overall, the pick they got from Philly, their own 2018 1st round pick or 2019 Clippers or Memphis pick or maybe the rights to one of their 3 stash players in some sort of deal with the knicks
But I don’t see a reason for the Knicks to move Porzingis other than Phil Jackson’s ineptitude
That Suns trade is A LOTTTTT to give up and taking on Noah’s wasteland contract. Bender is a Porzingis-lite at this point, needs to become a better shooter and put on some weight I think he’s like 140 lbs.
Had to match salaries…maybe Knight going back to the Knicks instead of bledsoe? I gave Phoenix the Knicks 2019 pick for taking on Noah, although some of that is offset by them getting Thomas’ value and ending out a Dudley’s contract….I pretty much saw it as Anthony Davis trade value minus 2-3 good assets b/c there isn’t much reason for the knicks to trade Porzingis on his rookie scale deal
Also Porzingis is an exponentially better defender than Bender. Bender still needs to develop big man skills. He doesn’t currently have a position. He’s super young though, so he has all the time to develop.
Porzingis for #3 and nets next year. Josh jackson or lonzo would be solid plus lauri at 8 and then next year Michael porter
Does ANYONE here really think that Jackson has the stones to endure, let alone successfully construct, a rebuild of an entire franchise, which would absolutely mean that they would move Anthony or buy him out this summer. It would make ZERO sense to have Anthony on this team if they trade Porzingis. That means a NY team devoid of stars, something that he’s never dealt with before. Jackson was brought in to acquire stars via FA. That was his cache. He has NEVER had the experience of drafting and constructing a team from scrap. He failed at bringing in the big names and there’s no reason why he should be given confidence of building a team. I’m 100% sure that if he’s traded they would be looking for a star caliber player NOW.
Yes
Plot twist Phil is trying to suck as a GM so he isn’t considered a Knicks great. Doesn’t want to get a lifetime ban from MSG
Porzingod is so good but he’s on the knicks so he can’t show his talent that much because Melo is scared of passing the ball so I hope he goes to some other team
What about the twolves? Towns Porzingis would be scary
Maybe Porzingis, Lance Thomas, and Courtney Lee for Dunn, Rubio, Bjelica, #7 overall, 2019 1st round pick, and the 2021 1st rounder?
