The Rockets are actively shopping point guard Patrick Beverley in search of a deal, a source tells Sean Deveney of The Sporting News. It’s possible that Houston will complete a trade involving Beverley before or during Thursday’s draft, per Deveney.
Deveney reports that Beverley has been open to being traded, and consulted with the Rockets about a possible offseason move. Although it’s not clear why Beverley might welcome a trade, he did see his role in Houston change a little this past season as James Harden assumed the point guard reins. Beverley’s 14.1% usage rate was a career low, though Deveney says the veteran guard liked playing for Mike D’Antoni.

Beverley, who will turn 29 next month, was his usual reliable self for the Rockets in 2016/17, chipping in 9.5 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 4.2 APG, and 1.5 SPG along with solid three-point shooting (.382 3PT%). His defensive ability also allowed the Rockets to have him guard the most dangerous backcourt threat on opposing teams, taking some pressure off Harden.
In addition to producing on both ends of the court, Beverley is currently a bargain. He’ll earn just $5.51MM in 2017/18 and $5.03MM in ’18/19 before becoming an unrestricted free agent. If the Rockets want to move him, they should have no shortage of potential trade partners.
Maybe something with Charlotte like Beverly for Lamb and a 2nd. Addresses back up PG for Hornets and gives the Rockets a pick and a young wing who can play and defend multiple positions.
Lmao sure, trade the one guy in Houston who plays tough defense, despite the fact that crap defense is what has held this team back 3 years in a row.
Not sure how “held back” the Rockets were 3 years ago when they made it to the WCF before losing to the eventually champs…
If Boston flips Smart/Bradley and Rozier along with picks for Porzingis, they suddenly need to add another guard, and Beverly would do that for cheap which may not hinder them if they try to max someone out.
But what does Boston offer for Beverley at that point? Beverley is plenty valuable especially with his cheap contract. I doubt the Rockets would want Bradley (if he wasn’t in a hypothetical Porzingas deal) as they’re essentially the same player (but with Bradley being more expensive and destined for free agency sooner). And with the Rockets likely trying to build around Harden, a collection of future firsts won’t be that valuable unless its the #3 pick, next year’s Brooklyn pick, or the future Lakers/Kings’ pick that is owed to them (all of which are more valuable than Beverley so Boston probably wouldn’t offer that). Houston would probably ask for Smart or Brown (or Crowder) which would open up another hole for them.
Boston’s pick next year and their pick in the 30’s this year. Houston almost got hard capped recently didn’t they? Couple of cheap guys here who they get to pull relatively soon, or can use at the deadline to upgrade.
Beverley is gonna take a tad more than a two meh picks. Beverley is very cheap and great for any contending team. If Beverley is being shopped the Rockets want more than cap relief.
But Houston is looking to contend around Harden. If they were willing to take so little for Beverley they might as well blow the whole team up (including trading Harden). Plus the player drafted with that second round pick and a late first next year are unlikely to be contributing to a playoff team or be attractive assets that they could flip for a more help. If they were just going to flip those two picks for another player, they might as well just keep Beverley.
This is the kind of junkyard dog that I would love on the Sixers.
Maybe Beverley for Covington? Covington would give Houston a 3-and-D wing to put next to Harden. Or maybe Okafor? Not sure how well he would fit in D’Antoni’s system but he would be a young big to grow alongside Harden if he stays healthy.
Okafor would be an overpay for PB and they like Covington as their future SG/SF especially on his affordable contract
While Covington’s contract is great, he will be a UFA in 2018
What do the Houston Rockets need? I’m shocked they are looking to move Beverly to be honest.
Defense, which would defeat the purpose of trading Beverley since he helps the Rockets hide Harden on someone else, and a second scoring option to take some of the load off of Harden. But I don’t see Beverley alone being enough to acquire a good second option.
It must be something else, because if defense and scoring are what they need then why trade Beverly? He gives you the defense as we know and while he shoots for a poor overall shooting % he’s elite level when it comes to 3pt%
I honestly doubt anything happens (wasn’t Beverley’s name floated in rumors last offseason or something like that too?) unless Houston can acquire a legit second scoring option. You’re right about Beverley’s ability to shoot from 3pt range, he’s not a second scoring option so that’s the only thing I could imagine them wanting in a Beverley trade. If they were looking for cap relief, there are better options to try and move than Beverley.
They need defense, athleticism, and rebounding…so naturally it makes sense to move Beverly? Lol. They could use a versatile wing defender
I wonder if they want to move Beverly because they have too much money invested in guards and small forwards? Harden, Gordon, Williams and Ariza will earn about $52 million next year and they don’t have a lot of depth in true bigs.
Maybe they want to free up some cash to go after a big?
I would love to see the Pistons trade for Beverly and giving up Reggie Jackson
