The Spurs are said to be preparing an offer for restricted free agent Jonathon Simmons worth $9MM per year, Marc Stein of ESPN tweets.
Earlier today, Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN said that it initially looked as though the Spurs would likely lose Simmons to free agency. Now, possibly because of the package Stein made reference to, there’s a decent chance he stays in San Antonio.
It’s not clear what exactly Simmons would attract on the open market. While his value has inevitably increased after playing a role in Gregg Popovich‘s rotation, he presents as little more than a solid perimeter defender that averaged 12.5 points per 36 minutes. That hasn’t stopped NBA teams from reaching deep into the piggybank in the past, however.
Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News has added his voice to the conversation, suggesting that Simmons is very unlikely to jump at just any Spurs offer, preferring instead to seek out a deal and give San Antonio the opportunity to match.
Only 9m a year ahahah bye bye simmons
Lol shut up buddy.
This is today’s NBA. Where being a solid defender while averaging 6 & 2 nets you $9 mil aav.
Monopoly money.
When hes in that system, points and rebs/assists need to be overlooked. You saw his impact against the rockets and Warriors* .. Although they got swept, he was their best player after kawhi went down. Plus he isnt asked to score and pop hasnt expanded his role. Hes a perfect player to go up against these contenders.
Deserves whatever he gets. Great story on how he got to the Spurs and well deserved.
Dude reminds me of prime Wade on defense. He is all over the floor. And then he also kind of has some of that in his game offensively in bursts. Thats coming from a Heat fan. He’s in his late 20s, but he plays hard. I would be interested in seeing him in a bigger role. Definitely one of those good stories
Woah there now … prime wade was another level. Juice isnt on that level. Hes good but 28 yr old wade was unbelievable, sadly he didn’t have a better team those late 20 years.
On defense…on offense, he has some of his repertoire in there/some of his manerisms, but obviously….I’m not in any way calling him prime Dwyane Wade, the 2nd-3rd greatest 2 guard ever (Jerry West isn’t top 3 for me. Those other top 3 were elite defenders)
I saw him getting somewhere in the $7-11 million range. They probably need to retain him to keep some athleticism on the wing, and give them the ability to play a couple of different lineups. They also need some help at the backup 4 spot, as well as obviously, a lead PG, and a backup rim protector that can defend pick and rolls to replace Dedmon.
Adam Hanga who is the best defender in Euroleague is coming over, Dejounte and Derrick are going to be the point. Miltounov is coming over also. And Willie Reed and Spurs have interest with one another.
Ya but I see Reed getting I see at least $6-7 million, probably closer to $9 million, and I can see him getting as much as $11 million. I’d put Dedmon in that same range…
Theoretically someone could give them close to what Mahinmi and Biyombo got, but what teams have the need and space, and trust they’d be good enough with a bigger role, or would want to use their space on a 5? I think they both get near the MLE or a couple of million higher
I have Rose to the Spurs too. I have to admit, I need more scouting info on the international guys…I would need to do some research on them. I’m aware of a bunch of other international guys on a few teams, but these guys are slipping my mind right now…
And autocorrect gets me again lol
well the most he can get next year under NBA salary rules is 9 mil so there’s that.
