JUNE 26, 10:32am: Despite Scott Layden‘s assertion (noted below) that Rubio will have a “great career” in Minnesota, Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter link) hears that the Timberwolves remain intent on trading the veteran point guard.
A report over the weekend indicated that Minnesota may be eyeing a handful of notable free agent point guards. However, Jon Krawczynski of the AP cautions (via Twitter) that a Rubio deal is “no sure thing.”
JUNE 23, 9:46am: Appearing on KFAN FM 100.3 in Minnesota, Timberwolves GM Scott Layden suggested this morning that the team is planning on keeping Rubio, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Associated Press (Twitter links). Krawczynski acknowledges that things could always change, but says Layden praised Rubio’s second half and added that the point guard will “have a great career here.”
JUNE 22, 8:22pm: After completing the night’s biggest blockbuster, the Timberwolves continue to seek a trade involving Ricky Rubio, reports Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today (via Twitter). According to Zillgitt, the Wolves would plan on finding a new point guard in free agency if they make a deal involving Rubio.

In their deal with the Bulls, the Wolves included last year’s fifth overall pick Kris Dunn, who was viewed as Minnesota’s potential point guard of the future. That would appear to open the door for Rubio to hold the job for the foreseeable future without having to look over his shoulder — particularly since another one of the team’s top ball-handlers, Zach LaVine, was sent to Chicago as well. However, it seems that the Wolves may have their eye on another point guard for next season.
Rubio has been linked to a handful of teams in recent months, including the Mavericks, Pistons, and Knicks. One interesting potential trade partner for the Wolves is Utah. The Jazz were reportedly discussing Rubio earlier in the day, and have enough cap room to acquire the veteran point guard immediately without sending out any salary. If the Jazz were to land Rubio, that would likely pave the way for George Hill‘s exit in free agency.
Come to the Kings
Come to the Kings
It’s not likely but PLEASE
They could actually trade Rubio for the 20th selection and a player or two
Why tf would they want Rubio when they just got Fox who would run circles around that hairy clown.
They replied before the draft happened
I was about to say cause Fox will be electrifying.
Trade him to the Lakers for Clarkson.
That might be the dumbest thing I’ve read. Why would trade for a PG when they JUST DRAFTED ONE!
Wolves targeting Rose in FA?
My thoughts exactly, get some bench scoring and maybe a future pick for Rubio and sign Rose….its a gamble, a huge gamble. But if Rose will play well for anyone it will be for Thibs
Rose? = Trash Mr. Crutches
1. George Hill (Must Be) 2. Jeff Teague (Maybe) 3. CP3 (Great)
I guess I don’t follow the apparent urgency to move Rubio.
My guess is that it has something to do with there being basically no good PG’s in free agency next year. So if they want to improve there, there’s no time like the present. Plus this market is saturated since almost all the teams except Utah, LAC, and Tor, maybe Orlando too, already have a solution or just drafted one. So if Utah for instance signed teodosic, then there’s more FA pg’s than teams need and one of these guys might sign for less than the max.
On the offensive end they don’t want butler playing off ball, so they will be putting the ball in his hands a lot, making a point guard who can’t shoot useless.
If that’s completely true, i don’t know why it would even be rumored that they’re interested in Rose. But you’re right that rubio is pointless if Butler has a high usage rate. Rubios defender will be able to sag off and close up driving lanes. They definitely need someone else if they don’t want butler to leave after 2 years. For that to happen they’ll need to win a playoff series or 2 over the next two seasons.
With Butler,Wiggins, and Towns around, Rubio can now settle down and stop worrying about shooting 3’s. He will barely have the ball past half court.
George Hill or Jeff Teague would make a lot of sense there. I still say Rubio would make sense in Brooklyn, even after the Russell move for them….Houston might technically make sense as a darkhorse, if they move Beverley and Lou Williams
Or if they could maybe send over Shumpert and/or something, Cleveland kind of makes sense as well, as a backup PG around their shooters
In this picture Rubio tells the ref “it was that guy that hit me in the face with a two by four”
“He went that way, officer”
There’s a 100% chance that the Wolves will either trade Rubio or not.
Charlottes trying to trade Sessions before they have to make a decision on his option. Maybe Sessions, Jeremy Lamb, and one Johnny O’Bryant or Treveon Graham and next years first for Rubio and a second
Oh hell no
My thoughts are that they either sign Hill or Teague or trade for someone like Dragich on the Heat, he can score, he might be older than Rubio but that means they could probably get a pick along with him. But the more likely outcome is trading him for some picks and then signing Hill or Teague(they need a promise that they will sign from one of them before they can even think about pulling the trigger on a deal). They are only really missing a true PF now. They could also target Milsap or Griffin or Ibaka. Having a lineup of Hill/Teague Butler Wiggins Milsap/Griffin/Ibaka Towns is a pretty good lineup and they don’t need to trade any of their picks to do it either.
The Wolves and the 76ers will be contending within the next 2-3 years and become forces to reckon with in their respective conferences. You heard it here first people
It’s a thought, but not really possible. You’d have to convince those PG and PF combos to take way less than max. Wolves, even if they trade rubio, are going to have less than 30mil in cap room. Each of those players you listed are going to get 20+ and they’re going to start having to pay the youngins soon. I’d like to see them make a run at patty mills or a Beverly trade. Also i’d kick the tires hard on james johnson who would really fit this team well as a defensive forward with a little range and great passing.
Although i did forget about the cap room they conceivably clear with Pekovic. In any case, I wouldn’t want that many guys in the starting 5 who cost a lot and want to score. I’d trade Rubio to Orlando for Meeks and a 2nd rd pick. Sign Mills, Johnson, and CJ Miles. and have a depth chart like this:
Mills Jones
Butler Meeks
Wiggins Miles Oliver
Towns Jones Bjelica
Dieng Patton ALdrich
Who is Johnson? James Johnson?
Olivers a Center
I had Oliver in the wrong spot. Listed at PF, but I just put him on here because he’s on the roster. They’ve got depth at PF so he might be G league’n it. And I put jones instead of Johnson accidentally. I still get James jones and Johnson mixed up. You definitely don’t want James jones.
Are they giving up a pick? Rubio is what MCW would be if you just kept playing him. Can’t shoot can make some passes plays defense but really really can’t shoot.
