In the wake of today’s trade with the Pistons that sends Avery Bradley to Detroit, the Celtics have no intention of moving Jae Crowder and have no “pressing” deals on the go, reports Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe (Twitter links). Himmelsbach adds that Boston will look to use its room exception, and the team never rules out the possibility of more dealing, as Mark Murphy of The Boston Herald tweets. For now, though, nothing appears imminent.
One player who could be a candidate for the Celtics’ room exception is free agent center Dewayne Dedmon. Jabari Young of The San Antonio Express-News suggests (via Twitter) that he kept hearing at the Utah Summer League how intrigued the Celtics are by Dedmon. However, it’s not clear if that interest is mutual, particularly given Boston’s cap limitations.
Here’s more from around the Atlantic:
- Asked today about the trade rumors surrounding Paul George, Pacers president Kevin Pritchard told reporters that the rumored offers from the Celtics and other teams were only about 5% correct (Twitter link via Matt Glenesk of The Indianapolis Star).
- The Knicks were impressed by guard Dwight Buycks‘ performance in Summer League and are interested in signing him to their offseason roster, sources tell Ian Begley of ESPN.com. Buycks helped lead the Mavericks’ squad to an Orlando Summer League title this week.
- The Knicks‘ offer sheet for Tim Hardaway Jr. includes the same advance salary structure as Otto Porter‘s deal with the Nets, tweets ESPN’s Zach Lowe. Hardaway’s deal calls for 50% of his annual salary to be paid by October 1 annually.
- Veteran guard Sergio Rodriguez, who spent the season with the Sixers, prefers to remain in the NBA. However, CSKA Moscow is making a push to lure him back overseas, according to Nikos Varlas of Eurohoops. The Russian club lost Milos Teodosic to the Clippers in free agency.
Celtics need to spend their remaining money on a backup guard or because Smart will most likely be in the starting lineup so they need to find a guard to replace him on the bench, I could see them possibly looking to bring back Green since he can play forward as well and he knows the system but Deadmond wouldn’t be a bad signing but they have bigger needs in my opijoj
I don’t think smart will be in starting line up. Think it’s gonna be horford, Morris, Hayward, brown, IT with bench of smart, roizer, tatum, crowder, zizic and maybe Nader and the other guy that was stashed last year (can’t think of his name)… maybe use the mid level exception on a guy and knock one of those last two off
also have the signee from Germany — Michael Theis: “Theis is 6-foot-8, 243 pounds and at 25 years old is still considered more of a project offensively and more reliable on defense and as a rebounder.”
Lol no they need a big. Horford, Morris, Zizic, and Mickey are the only ones currently on the roster.
I think I’d be nice if the took a chance with Roy Hibbert… maybe a flop but he used to be solid.. get him on a one year deal..
Him or Bogut would be great of the bench
Um they have Rozier as a backup and they drafted like 3 in the 2nd round this yr there major need is center
Yet Pritchard did not deny the rumors outright. And he knew that the Celtics had to first sign Hayward before dealing for George. Pritchard is trying to cover his rear end.
If the Celtics get a dedmon or Reed, that’s an amazing offseason. They don’t have the money for that though, unless they take less. Wish the Heat could keep Reed, but they have the same issue
Looks like Hayward may be moving to the 2.
I had read that somewhere else, prior to him signing with Boston.
I agree with your thoughts on Prichard. I don’t believe he wanted Paul George with the Celtics or Cavs for fear that they might have been able to convince him to sign for 3 or 4 years and then PG helps either team beat the Pacers and the remainder of the East teams for quite a while. They did not want to help the 2 best teams in the East get better. As for the starting lineup I think it will be Horford- 4, Zizic-5, Hayward-3, Smart-2 and IT -1. With Rozier, Brown, Tatum, Crowder off the bench. But I see another trade coming for a big and I wonder if Morris will still be a Celtic.
Stay tuned for the possibility of Jamal Crawford joining the Celtics. He is Isiah’s buddy and a great addition off the bench. Love this offseason. I would love to see Ainge put aa package together for Cousins or Gasol assuming the contract could somehow work.
Zizic is awful . Have you been watching summer league? I’m not saying we don’t need someone bigger in the middle .. I also agree that another trade could be looming.. Zizic looks bad though .. he is definitely NOT ready
It’s summer league what’s it been 2-3 games the kid is coming from over seas and trying to learn US basketball y don’t you give him till the pre-season is over to make that statement ol
That’s correct .. it’s summer league.. if you can’t compete against rookies and 2nd year players how are you gonna compete in the regular season.. He’s not even close to ready to play real minutes in the NBA . People are talking about starting him at center..
You could see a scenario with Morris, Crowder, Mickey and maybe Jackson with 2 first round picks (they have 5 over next 3 years) going to Memphis for Gasol or New Orleans for Cousins. I think Cousins is a FA next year but maybe they could sign him. Probably not realistic because he and Isiah would both probably want max deals and with Horford and Hayward that probably can’t happen.
Wouldn’t they need more salary to make a trade like that for cousins or gasol?
Not if it washes out salary wise but if they don’t match then ya it wouldn’t work
What in the world is a room exception… NBA’s salary and contract systen is more complicated than the us tax code. Too many exceptions. I don’t even bother trying to understand it all.
The room exception is basically just another variation of the mid-level exception, except it’s smaller ($4.3MM instead of $8.4MM) and only available to teams that go under the cap, once they’ve used all their cap room.
Alex Len would be perfekt as rim protector
Lol no he wouldn’t.
If you are going to trade Crowder you need to come away with a Big. Otherwise what is the point? idk now they didn’t try n get Nurkic before the injury.
omg…Mills is MORE incompetent than we thought…screwed for another 4 years….love my Knicks since birth but I’ll check back in 2021 to see what’s up …sadness
Starting lineup looks like Thomas, Hayward, Crowder, Morris and Horford to me
I don’t think Morris starts I think they go with Brown or Tatum
Most teams tend to start out with a more traditional lineup (two bigs) so it would make more sense to start Morris rather than Brown or Tatum (assuming Crowder also starts). You can substitute one or the other as the game goes on (and we’re also forgetting about Smart), but early game it makes more sense to start Morris.
In less Smart gets traded the kids a good player but he need to stop that other crap he does like flops and attitude
Y’all realize Hayward can play SG, and they need a bigger lineup bc of how tiny IT is. Starting lineup- 1. Isaiah Thomas 2. Gordon Hayward 3. Jae Crowder 4. Marcus Morris 5. Al Horford Bench- Smart, Rozier, Brown, Tatum, Mickey, and whoever else. They need more big men depth
