Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is perhaps most known among NBA fans for an angry farewell letter printed in Comic Sans that he published in the wake of LeBron James‘ departure from Cleveland in 2010. Seven years later, Gilbert and James are on much better terms, but Gilbert was still showing a penchant for saying things other team owners wouldn’t during a press conference today.
Asked about the Cavaliers’ pursuit of Paul George, Gilbert told reporters that the Pacers “could have done better than they did,” per Sam Amico of AmicoHoops (Twitter link). While that’s a view widely held by NBA observers, it’s still surprising to hear it coming in a public forum from a rival team’s owner. The Cavs were reportedly close to acquiring George last month before the Pacers opted to go in another direction, so perhaps Gilbert was conveying some lingering frustration from those discussions.
Here’s more from today’s presser in Ohio:
- When pressed directly, Gilbert said he expects Kyrie Irving to be in camp with the Cavs this fall, but neither Gilbert nor GM Koby Altman would confirm that Irving won’t be traded, or even that he’s asked to be dealt. The duo referred to the situation as “fluid,” as Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com details.
- Altman called the idea that there’s animosity between Irving and James “overblown,” and added that the Cavs still believe they’re in great shape as a franchise, despite the offseason narrative of turmoil and drama.
- James remains “deeply committed” to the Cavaliers, Altman said today, according to Vardon. Gilbert added that the four-time MVP has been “as helpful as he’s even been” this offseason, having helped recruit Derrick Rose and Jeff Green.
Oh? Helps if you have a GM.
Yeah that’s who Koby Altman is
Today. Was he the GM when PG13 was traded? No, they lowballed the guy involved in those trades who I think was working without a contract.
You know what Griffin was prior to being promoted to the position of a GM? The assistant GM. The notion that without a person holding the title of a GM that the duties of said role went unmanned is short-sighted. In fact, knowing a couple of front-office people, the GM doesn’t necessarily handle all the duties of a trade. A lot of times they have a staff heavily involved in the matter. I also, think that a) not having any draft picks in this year’s draft. b) having very little to no cap space to sign an impact FA. c) having very little trade targets in mind (George, Butler, Anthony) mitigated the immediate need to hastily name a GM knowing that Altman was in fold had Billups fall thru.
That was July 3rd. It’s July 26th dude. Took them 23 days of sitting on their thumb before promoting this guy? And all they did was sign Rose to a vet min.
Wow…. my point is that over the past 23 days who was handling the GM responsibilities? The same guy who was just named the GM. Relax and think it thru.
Also, you ask what did they do in a very poo hoosih fashion. First off, by reports, they were close to trading for both George and Butler (one of the other, not both on the same team). Pacer’s GM Pritchard walked away from the table. It sounded like Butler could’ve happened but the Wolves offered a better package. You can’t force a trade but this idea that ONLY a guy whose title is officially the GM can negotiate a deal is laughable.
Furthermore….”all they did was sign Rose to a vet min”. Geez Louise……say what you want about Rose and his blemishes but the Cavs just signed a 28 yo guard who just scored 18 pts pg on 47% shooting (the highest since his 2nd season btw) for the vets minimum to be a back up player, and perhaps, if Irving is traded, the starting PG job. He would literally have to pull a Andrew Bogut straight out of training camp (let’s hold our collective breaths) for that not the be an incredibly good signing. How many players scored 18 per game last year and signed this year for less than some multi-million dollar multi year contract. If he is a complete flop what’s the loss. He could’ve gone to other teams (Lakers and Spurs had interest) and most assuredly, received more money. I’m assuming playing with LBJ (because they are friends) and competing for a chip was his motivation, which actually is surprising considering what he’s said in the media about wanting that big bag of money. That is perhaps the best value signing of the year.
Kyrie should stick around and wait till Lebron bolts so he can take over, either way Lebron will lead the Cavs to the Finals.
If you read any articles surrounding this he doesn’t want to stick in Cleveland because he knows LeBron is going to bolt and the Cavs won’t have the pieces to rebuild quickly. And the pieces they would have don’t match his style of play.
Oh well.
I kind of disagree that the players around him (Kyrie) don’t match his style of play. Kevin Love’s Wolves team kind of ran a quick pace game through his outlet passes. JR Smith and Korver seem to excel in situations that put them in a fast paced offense that gives them (shooters) space to work with. Shump is a slasher and Thompson is an athletic big who can run the floor. So I really don’t see which major players don’t fit with Kyrie. The Cavs system is built around LeBron. If LeBron truly does leave, I think Tyron Lue (or whoever ends up coaching) they’d be willing to change the system to focus on Kyrie as the centerpiece.
Honestly speaking, the Cavs really aren’t saddled with hard to move contracts at the end of next season. Frye would be a FA, Shump has a PO which I think he would decline for a new deal, Jefferson, Felder and Tavares are on 1 year deals for less than $3 mil each.
Love has 1 year @ $24 mil and a PO for $25 mil. That being said, he’s an all-star big in a stretch 4 world. That would not be a difficult contract to move and get good return value. Tristan has a fair market contract at 2/$35 mil. The only contract that might be a little tough to move is Smith at 2/$30 mil but even that deal could be attractive if he has a healthy 2017-18 season and returns to his 2016 level of shooting.
Compared to CURRENT NBA deals the Cavs don’t really have sunken cost contracts where the performance is so much lower than the market value of the player.
I’ve also heard that while the specter of him leaving exists there’s no guarantee that he absolutely will leave and thus Kyrie would be stuck in the ohhhhh so awful position of winning another ECF and competing for another championship.
Oh boo hoo poor Dan Gilbert. You were the baby when the Lakers got CP3 but when its the Cavs its ok. Sorry the Cavs didnt want to hand George to you
CP3 never went to the Lakers , and it was the pacers that didn’t hand George to the Cavs…. I had to dumb myself down to read your comment lol
You sound like a salty cavs fan. You and i both know exactly what im talking about with cp3 and the lakers. Dan gilbert is in no place to complain about the pacers
Typical LA delusional fan…..
CP3 definitely should’ve been a Laker and you’re right it was the Pacers that didn’t hand George to the Cavs… they straight up handed him off to OKC
We can all pretty much agree that the Pacers could have got more for PG. But Gilbert is just bitter because it seems to be starting to fall apart for the Cavs and the Pacers wouldn’t play along and take Kevin Love for PG.
So let’s take a look at what he’s talking about. Let’s assume the trade was Kevin Love for Paul George and not focus on what the other smaller pieces were.
Kevin Love coming off of a .427/.373/.871 year avg 19 per game (as the 3rd option) and 11 rebounds per game (ranked 8th in the NBA). He is owed 2/$46 mil and a PO for $25 mil
Victor Olidpo .442/.361/.753 and 16 pts/3 assists/2 rebounds per game. Starting this coming season he will earn 4/$84 guaranteed money.
The only advantage Oladipo offers is that he’s 4 years younger.
So while Gilbert spoke his mind he’s not incorrect in his thinking. It’s been said by many that the Pacer’s GM simply didn’t want to deal him within the Eastern Conference (and maybe not to a team he wanted to go to).
Can’t disagree with you…but also see why the Pacers wouldn’t want him in their situation. I think Gilbert’s frustrated that the Pacers wouldn’t take Love…and now it’s worse as PG for Kyrie would now have been an option for the Cavs (if they wanted to do it) if the Pacers had held out for a better offer. Probably makes him sick knowing what the Pacers took vs. how much the Cavs would have given up today
Says the guy who’s team is a dumpster fire right now.
3 straight NBA Finals appearances and a championship….yep dumpster fire……
He was right. Indiana got fleeced.
