JULY 19: The Celtics have officially signed Baynes, the team announced today in a press release.
JULY 9: The Celtics have reached an agreement with Aron Baynes on a one-year deal that will be worth $4.3MM, sources tell Shams Charania of The Vertical (Twitter link). Boston will be using its room exception to bring Baynes aboard.
Baynes, who spent the last two seasons with the Pistons, turned down a player option worth $6.5MM to become a free agent this summer. Detroit didn’t rule out bringing back the big man, but ultimately renounced his rights as part of this week’s moves, all but closing the door on the possibility of a reunion.
Boston lacked frontcourt depth after losing Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko, and Kelly Olynyk in free agency and waiving Tyler Zeller. Baynes has an opportunity to play a key role off the bench for the Celtics.
Having used their cap room and their room exception, the C’s will now be limited to minimum salary deals for free agents going forward.

This is 6’10. Which means he’s the tallest player on the Celtics
*This guy is
Did you forget about zizic?
His man bun adds at least 0.5″
I like this
Yeah me too
wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes an unlikely hero for the C’s
Not a C’s fan but love this move. Barnes is aggressive on the boards and helps give them some experienced size which they desperately needed.
Big body in the middle….. could be a nice backup
Can only help. Should be a good tough bench player. Needed another big. Looks like he can rebound a little.
Detroit could offer more than 1 year 4.3 million though so I would assume $ isn’t the main reason they let him go.
Given Baynes declined his 6.5m player option I think it says more about his intent than the Pistons’. That said he was mooted to get a salary in the low to mid teens.
If you are going to be a backup, which team would you rather be on? Especially if the Celtics make the next steps and he can be seen as a difference maker.
I recall seeing van gundy describe his as the team’s best communicator and as always making the defense better when on the floor. Promising for the Cs.

Baynes had a player option..it wasn’t the Pistons decision
Right but at the time I commented the article said (it no longer does) that Detroit only had Early Bird rights, which limited what they could offer, my point was just that money wasn’t the factor in why he left. I guess I misphrased it but I meant that Baynes didn’t leave because of the best $$ offer.
The only problem now is that Rozier is the only guard on the bench(Smart will probably start) since Jackson will most likely be waived, so they now lack depth at point guard spot but they will figure something out. Either way the Celtics are beating the Cavs in 6 games or less this year(if the Cavs even make it that far) you heard it here first
Dude who could the Cavs possibly lose to before the conf finals? Please don’t say the Wiz or Raptors
Terrific move — gives the Celtics a banger and prevents other teams from going big. Predict he will be a Scalabrine-type cult hero in Boston.
No one will ever live up to the White Mamba. It just can’t be done.
Add some tatts and he can become the next birdman.
No depth issues. Jaylen Brown will start at the 2 position with Smart and Rozier off the bench. Zezic and Baynes will play The 5 so Horford can play his natural position at the 4 and Hayward at the 3. This makes for a strong bench. Need Zezic and Baynes to do a lot of the dirty work.
Zizic and Baynes are going to be starting. It will be IT Brown or Smart Hayward Crowder Horford with a solid bench, but I do think we have too many guys who are build to play the 3, I think we deal Morris mid season and keep the obvious group of Hayward Crowder Brown and Taytum for the future. They need to invest in a better back up center or even a starting center and move Horford to the 4 and have Crowder as the 6th man either way the Celtics should draft either Donich or Ayton next year
