Tyler Zeller, whose $8MM salary would have become fully guaranteed today, has been waived by the Celtics, tweets Chris Forsberg of ESPN.com.
The move was expected as Boston is concentrating on opening cap space to provide flexibility in free agency. Zeller now becomes an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with any team.
The fifth-year center spent the past three seasons with the Celtics after being acquired from Cleveland in a 2014 deal. Zeller, 27, played 51 games this season, averaging 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds.
Maybe he’ll go back up Dwight Howard and his brother Cody in Charlotte
I could see him ending up in Philly as a stop gap between now and when they decide to bring the guy they traded for in the draft over from Spain or wherever he is
Should have tried to trade him
They probably did, but he would’ve had no value except as a salary matcher. No one is going to give up assets (like a picks/young players straight up for Zeller) to cut him as almost everyone knew he would be cut, so why trade and keep him at $8m when he could likely be had for less. And the only other deals Boston would likely get for him are bad, guaranteed contracts plus a pick for him…and with Boston looking to maximize their cap space for free agents, it would make no sense to do that type of deal.
Pacers make sense
Guy looks way too happy in the pic for someone who just got cut.
Maybe that pic was right after he signed his $8mil contract for sitting on the bench
