JULY 4, 12:25am: The Nuggets are expected to receive some form of draft compensation in the proposed deal – assuming it gets done – for their willingness to facilitate a sign-and-trade of Gallinari, Wojnarowski says in his full ESPN report. It would likely come in the form of a second-round pick from the Hawks, according to Sam Amick of USA Today, who tweets that Atlanta would receive cash in the deal.
JUNE 3, 11:40pm: Crawford has “no plans” to play in Atlanta if this three-way trade gets finalized, so a buyout or another trade of Crawford is considered necessary for the Hawks if they acquire him, tweets Amick.
11:27pm: The proposed sign-and-trade would send Gallinari to the Clippers and Millsap to the Nuggets, with Jamal Crawford, Diamond Stone, and a first-round pick heading to the Hawks, tweets Shams Charania of The Vertical. The first-rounder would likely be the pick L.A. acquired from Houston in last week’s Paul trade, tweets Wojnarowski.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggests (via Twitter) that Crawford may want a buyout if he ends up in Atlanta, though with $14MM+ on his cap hit for 2017/18 and a partial guarantee on his deal for the following year, that could be tricky.
11:16pm: Free agent forward Danilo Gallinari is leaning “strongly” toward committing to sign with the Clippers, league sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link). If Gallinari reaches a deal with L.A., it’s expected to be a three-year pact worth $65MM, per Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
According to Sam Amick of USA Today (via Twitter), the Nuggets and Hawks would both be involved in the agreement if Gallinari and the Clippers strike a deal, with the former No. 6 overall pick heading to Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade scenario. The involved parties are still working through the details, but Atlanta would land a first-round pick in the proposed deal, tweets Amick.
The Clippers don’t currently have the cap flexibility to accommodate a market-value Gallinari signing without a sign-and-trade, but the Nuggets won’t be eager to take much – if any – salary back in a sign-and-trade, since they’ve earmarked most of their cap space for Paul Millsap. As such, it makes sense for a team with cap room like the Hawks to enter the mix — they could absorb some outgoing salary from the Clippers, getting a draft pick in the process as a sweetener. And, with Denver involved, they could also include Millsap in the deal.
We’ll wait to see whether the three teams – and Gallinari’s camp – can all come to an agreement, but if the Clippers finalize a deal, they’d be hard-capped for the 2017/18 season at $125.266MM, and would still have their mid-level exception available. Los Angeles shook up its roster last week by trading Chris Paul to the Rockets, but picked up a few interesting pieces in that trade, such as Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, and Sam Dekker. The Clips also agreed to re-sign Blake Griffin over the weekend, so there’s still a decent amount of talent on the roster.
Gallinari, who turns 29 next month, has had some trouble staying on the court in recent years, appearing in just 175 total games over the last four seasons. However, he has been a versatile and effective scorer when he plays, averaging 18.2 PPG with a shooting line of .447/.389/.902 in 2016/17.
The Clippers reportedly met with both Gallinari and Rudy Gay over the weekend as the team aggressively sought out a small forward.
Jerry working his magic. Took the Clippers an eternity to get a floor spacing 3 and thanks to the logo the Clippers are finally pulling the moves that will get them where they need to be.
Get rid of Doc who never was able to unlock the full potential of this team and held them back because of his personnel decisions
Doubt he leaves
If this happens clippers somehow improve by losing paul
Crazy, right? I follow baseball much more closely but am fascinated by what it often takes to get trades done in the NBA.
With Gallinari they could be a 47-51 win team. Blake is out till December though.
Gallinari is always injured though, hes no lock to play 70 games
What if he stays healthy though? He could average 18-21 in LA
He literally never has though, hes made of glass
Jamal Crawford smoothest shooter ever. Got some Sam Jones in him.
Crawford should sign with the Cavs.
Warriors. Get an easy ring while being a scoring 2 off the bench and stay in California.
Not a fan of the Warriors what so ever. KD absolutely wrecked competition but only Lebron could beat that Warriors team and he will. Cleveland and San Antonio can beat the Warriors.
Personally I think Ray Allen is the smoothest shooter ever. Best footwork I’ve ever seen, super quick release, could handle the ball and pull from 35 on you and hit nothing but net, and drive you crazy trying to guard him coming off of back screens. Him and Curry are 1A and 1B in my book.
I rather have Reggie Miller. Top 5 shooters of all time.
1. Curry
2. Bird
3. Reggie
4. Ray
5. Dirk
Not to say those aren’t great shooters, but Bird shot 37% career 3pt and only made about 700 his whole career. Reggie and Ray both played 18 seasons, Reggie has about 400 less made 3 pointers at 39% shooting, Ray has nearly 3000 made at 40%. Not to mention Ray was a main ballhandler for the Bucks and Sonics before he went to the Celtics. And he has rings and is way more clutch than Reggie, also made possibly the best shot in NBA Finals history in 2006. Curry is the only one close to Ray Allen and there’s numbers to support it.
Idk why you have bird in there. Plenty of other shooters ahead of Bird- Korver, Price, Miller, Nash all come to mind as better shooters.
It’d be awesome if Wolves ended up with Crawford. Get on it Thibs.
Yes
Wow…they got rid of Crawford and got a wing shooter/option at the 4 when Blake is on the bench. Combine that with the athleticism and depth they added, and they’re kind of on their way, with a backup 5, and maybe someone that can backup at the 2 guard spot…pretty impressive to do that with Chris Paul leaving.
Still don’t make it out of the second round
Way to troll bro. Of course because this is a rebuilding team atm
The Clippers will make a splash next year in FA and don’t forget they got a first round pick for next year’s draft which includes a blend of wings and bigs.
Did they keep Liggins? He can be a solid backup 2.
Liggins is a terrible shooter, guys like Shumpert, and Liggins are losing more and more value just like useless bigs are who can’t score.
Jamal Crawford to the GSW!
No man ether the rockets or cavs long shot okc
OKC would be a good look, he can go on scoring bursts while Russ and PG rest up.
Curious. I’m not a Clippers fan so I’m asking to you Clippers fans out here. What do you think of this sign and trade? If the guy can stay health he’s clearly a good addition to the team and I know they can use the offense after lost CP3 and getting a defensive guard in return. Yes they got a really good scorer in Williams but he’ll be coming off the bench. But how do you feel about losing Crawford? Already lost Reddick. Not sure what to make of this roster next season. I don’t think they’ll suck but they’ll be a different team that’s for sure.
Not a Clipper fan but I don’t get the comments on here about how well the Clippers have done this offseason. They will be worse even if Gallo plays a full season and this is a guy that that has played 2400 minutes (80 games, 30 mpg) *once* in 9 seasons.
Not really man, I did realize whenever Paul was out Griffin did a really good job having the offense ran through him in the post. He’s a good playmaker at his position and has a decent jumper, West has to see Griffin’s potential in a Lebron type of role where he can get you 20-23 ppg 10 rpg with 8-9 apg. They look like a 45-50 win team right now.
You have Blake Griffin putting up over 8 assists per game. I will look out for that.
As it stands, hawks could have 3 lottery protected picks in 2018. This rebuild is starting fast
Michael Porter Jr might be the best number 1 pick since Lebron. That kid has it all, the NBA body, the jumper, the athleticism, the passion for the game.
If Crawford gets traded to hawks who would take on his contract ? I could see him getting some kind of buyout then maybe he will sign cheap somewhere like to the warriors , rockets , thunder, wolves ?
If nothing else they can send him to Phoenix with a pick. He stays relatively out west, and Phoenix has said they will take on salary dumps for assets.
Phoenix might be a 30-40 win team at best dude, doubt Crawford would want to join them they are going full-rebuild.
Just meant if Atlanta wanted to clear the cap hit they could send cash and a pick and then Phoenix could buy him out if he wouldn’t stay
Atlanta can’t acquire anybody without giving up some other guys in return because NBA Trade Machine says over Luxry Tax.
I wouldn’t rely too much on the trade machine this week — it’s counting salary that shouldn’t be counted. With Millsap leaving, the Hawks are way below the cap, so no need to send out any salaries and no risk of going over the tax in this deal.
Imo this is an easy swap Shumpert for Crawford. Shumpert actually has some value as a defender and I think he can opt out next year anyway. Probably need to add Frye to help make it work for the Cavs.
