Nearly every team within the Atlantic Division has been busy this offseason by either adding key pieces or retaining their own stars. The Knicks may be the division’s lone exception and a league source tells Adam Zagoria of FanRag that the team isn’t expected to make any moves with the short-term in mind.
“[They are] building around K.P.,” one league source tells Zagoria. “Cleaning up all of Phil’s win-now mistakes.”
The source added that the franchise is “trying to build the right way, not with over-the-hill, oft-injured players that fit an antiquated and unproductive system.” New York added several veterans last offseason with the hope of making the playoffs while running the triangle offense during the 2016/17 campaign.
This offseason, the team appears to be targeting players who are not past their primes. New York was interested in Dion Waiters before the shooting guard re-signed with the Heat and it reportedly reached out to Jonathan Simmons about bringing the small forward to the Big Apple.
The Knicks remain hopeful that it can deal Carmelo Anthony and if a deal materializes, it could signal that the team will tank during the upcoming campaign. However, a source tells Zagoria that we won’t see a dramatic tank project akin to Philadelphia’s scheme with Sam Hinkie. “It looks like a rebuild,” a second league source tells Zagoria. “I do not think that they need to tank because they are not going to be very good anyway.”
There are some good options left on the FA market that they might be able to get under market, with how everything has died down…Afflalo and Tyreke Evans are FAs. Shelvin Mack is a FA. Tony Allen, Kj McDaniels, Ian Clark are also FAs. Maybe add some combination of them on cheap 1/2 year deals, and see what happens?
I’m not sure you’ll be able to move Melo with his trade kicker, and you can still try to build around him and Porzingis, and try to work around Noah, with Ntilikina getting a chance to develop
Maybe even consider teodosic
This team will never be nothing they’re even in the Nets’ shadow
Cmon Flores The Nets will always be the 2nd best team in NYC and it’s not even close.
I think he means record wise
Record wise? You mean the Nets who finished with the worst record last year? The Knicks, as bad as they are, are definitely not in the Nets’ shadow record wise.
Im just guessing what the guy meant because I really hope he didn’t mean fan wise
Melo is the the only player who is more boring than LeBron
…WHAT!?!? Great players are boring to you?
So I take it Corleone wouldn’t trade Bledsoe and Chandler for Melo and 8 thousand lottery picks
Would love to know why Lebron is boring to you? The guy plays hard, when needed he takes over the game on offense and defense. Did you not watch the finals last year when he single handily carried the Cavs to their first championship. He went beast mode and if that was entertaining to you I don’t know what is. I’ve always kind of hated on the guy and when he did that whole decision thing I lost the little respect I had for the guy. When he came back a part of me wanted to like him but I couldn’t but after watching his performance in those finals I had to admit it that he is a great player and he made a fan of me.
If they really what to just start over then they should trade KP ya he’s a good player but if they trade him to the C’s that could put them in a fast track I mean you could get a young point guard and a cheap forward in crowder and at least 3/4 draft pick a few in the top five
I don’t expect them to make any “win later” moves either.
Well this story just begs some delusional use of the trade machine. What chance this three way deal with Melo going to Houston and Anderson to Phoenix (plus make weights and other considerations maybe)? The final bit with Knight and Chandler going back to NY should draw at least one comment! Honestly though, I could see some appeal for NY even without the cap relief. Veteran PG, familiar centre, no ‘no-trade’ clause and the prospect they could move one of the two players again more easily. Hard to find Melo trades that work right now, but have to believe NY are trying to make it happen. Houston are doing their best impersonation of NY from a few years back and NY have to take advantage. link to espn.com
Luka Doncic!!
“I do not think that they need to tank because they are not going to be very good anyway.”
Man, that’s brutal. I’m not a Knicks fan, but I have to empathize with those of you who are…
This is a pure click bait article by FanRag and Zagoria. I love how his sources are LaLa and “league sources” LOL. I could have wrote this article with my own “league sources” (i.e. twitter and HoopsRumors.com).
But Knicks fans (myself included) are the most die hard and loyal so we are good for at least 10 clicks a day on any rumor remotely related to the Knicks. What are you gonna do?? LOL…I’ll keep clicking…
Haha I know right. I read the article and was like, well I already know all of this. I’ve known all of this since July 1st. I’m pretty sure that the Knicks organization decided to tank before they fired Jackson. And their lack of activity since the start of free agency has been confirmation of them planning on tanking. But since I’m a Knicks fan I’ll, like you, keep in clicking on.
I don’t see Cavs trading Love for Anthony. Love is worth more to that team than Melo would be.
